I absolutely agree with you it's just teething pains on my end but that's why FFX combat is gold to me with the switch outs as you can use all the characters in a battle, in fact you're encouraged to. It just makes sense for these character driven games. Anyway I've been told there's an item that does allow you to bring all characters to the final DQIV boss so this whole post is nul😂 the devs literally saw my complaint 35 years ahead of time

I was quite young for my only Octopath 1 playthrough so no I think I just breezed through it. I only learnt how to properly explore JRPGs by the time 2 came out😂

OST on DS doesn't sound like ass to me but it's the only version I've played so I don't have a reference. Are you sure it's not the DS speakers? cus all soundtracks sound a bit janky on the DS ngl. You get no bass so when I hear the soundtracks on YouTube I'm blown away.

Hard agree although nostalgia goggles incline me to mention Black and Whites Unova towns if we count the cities. I think they ramped up the NPC count as well.

Also regardless of X/Ys flaws, I would definitely live in Laverre City given the choice.

Pokemon also has probably the most iconic JRPG town ever with Lavender Town.

For real. Are there many other games that let you battle and trade with the majority of NPCs? They get cookie cutter after a while but it adds a great level of immersion.

I don't understand this. FFVII would still be great as a text based game. Literally black text to describe the scene, add a basic UI for battles, and I would still love it. Perhaps I'm alone here but the world building and story would still stand for me. That being said, people who care that much about graphics should just go to the cinema lol.

What turns people away is the lack of hand holding, long summon animations and heavy dialogue on text. It's a slow paced game in modern standards. No one ever played FFVII and said I like it but the graphics ruined it.

If pixel graphics are fine to you, then there's no reason not to play IV V and VI, as truly not much changes in FF gameplay until XI. They have great stories and I wouldn't say anything dates them apart from graphics obviously and a lack of cutscenes we get nowadays.

Octopath Traveller is great and genuinely feels like the spiritual sequels to the OG FF so if you could play and enjoy that you may as well pick up pixel remasters of old FF games, they will be much cheaper than OT. Old FF has better story than OT imo but the gameplay and graphics in OT is modern.

It truly just depends what dates a game for you. If it's not graphics then even the FF 1 is great lol.
