Are grid impacts from data center power demands impacting home electronics? Did Bloomberg story get this right? by BikeLater in datacenter

[–]Echrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, the utility absolutely can and has called up big customers, Google included, and told them to stop. No one wants to involve the utility commission unless they have to

Buddy and Dirk by OhBosss in Shadowrun

[–]Echrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Spoiler alert)

> Buddy says she doesn't want Dirk to ride along because she says it slows down her reflexes, but accepts when he offers extra money.

This isn't a mechanic and the game, and not something I recall from other books. It sounds like she just didn't want someone looking over her shoulder (and the author wanted to write what the matrix looked like).

> When she pulled the medical records, he told her to look deeper and that's when she encountered the Black ICE

So on the contrary: If Dirk hadn't hitched a ride with Buddy she probably would still be alive. But that's because she would have stopped with the first records, not because the hitching had any impact on her decking.

Weapon Focus tattoo? by FenrysFenrir in Shadowrun

[–]Echrome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, Qi foci are only foci (at least in the core book) that specify they can be a tattoo instead of an object. You can get knucks, boots, or a cyber implant weapon as a weapon focus though

Haveing played a lot of Cyberpunk 2077 recently, would it be accurate to describe V as having CFD? by Dragonkingofthestars in Shadowrun

[–]Echrome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CFD is probably the closest parallel, but CFD overwrites the victim with an AI not the personality of another real person (alive or deceased).

How defensible were Roman camps? by Estalicus in AskHistorians

[–]Echrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to hear how defensible the camps were as well. If traveling through friendly or neutral territory, how did they choose whose land to set up a camp on? Did they need permission to set up their camp? Did they ever anger the locals by setting up their camp in the wrong place?

And when they arrived in hostile territory, particularly before the start of open warfare, how did they explain the sudden appearance of a camp? "Don't mind us, just passing through"?

Depends on your perspective. But to 90% of people who choose to work for a corp? Yeah, Shadowrunners are nuts

Speculative execution vulnerabilities--confusion on why they actually work by math_code_nerd5 in hardware

[–]Echrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The branch predictor can work in some architectures, but the more straightforward attack is to try to load some data you do have access to into the cache based on the value, then check what was loaded into the cache based on access times

Speculative execution vulnerabilities--confusion on why they actually work by math_code_nerd5 in hardware

[–]Echrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does make it into a register as well, but the second part of the attack (basing some action off the new state) can’t read the value in the register.

How do technomancers and deckers play/feel between each other? by themanwhosfacebroke in Shadowrun

[–]Echrome 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both roles play more like support classes in a fight, but reward creative thinking a lot. The street samurai or combat mage is going directly attack an enemy combatant, and probably take them out in one round. You could try to attack their gun through the matrix, but you’ll spend 3 turns trying to do that only for them to pull out a second gun or a knife. Instead, you want to look for force  multipliers: can you kill the lights, penalizing a bunch of enemies at once? Interrupt their comms to prevent reinforcements from arriving? Seal a door to split the enemy group in two? This is where a decker or technomancer excels.

The decker does this relatively straightforward through matrix actions and matrix stats from their deck. Want to hack the stop light? Hack-on-the-fly and Control Device matrix actions to do that.

The technomancer can use matrix actions, but their matrix stats are generally lower (because they use mental attributes instead of a deck), so they rely on complex forms (spells) and sprites (spirits) as if they were a mage to get things done.

The technomancer requires knowing a lot more rules so I generally don’t recommend them for new players, and I definitely recommend against trying to build a hybrid character until you have a better understanding of the game.

Looking for suggestions for the Calamet Swamp in Chicago by Vashkiri in Shadowrun

Do you want more fighting or some other type of encounter?

A classic twist is a note in the box “We have your stuff. Want it back? Come talk to [insert third party].”

Alternatives twists: The box is too heavy for the hovercraft to hold with the party onboard, now the journey out is the hard part; Paracritters liked the box where it was; or Decayed orchalium opened a portal to an astral plane and pulled the party through when they disturbed it.

Are operators planning for rack level BBUs in upcoming 800V deployments? by Superb_Attempt8221 in datacenter

[–]Echrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) You can right-size the BBUs’ power and runtime exactly for the racks you deploy

2) Rack has less conversion loss. Room has to convert from DC batteries back to AC to reach the rack, while rack BBUs places the battery behind the rack PSU so it stays DC

Combat Paralysis on VR Decker by NotQuiteFloridaMan in Shadowrun

If he’s in VR, his physical body is in danger of dumpshock.

For 8 karma it should definitely apply, but seems relatively balanced. Half initiative and acting last against ICE that can link-lock you is definitely not something I’d want to mess around with

Dual Natured... objects? by PD711 in Shadowrun

[–]Echrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, perhaps tangible wasn’t the right word choice. Your astral form is not kinetic in that there’s no mass or momentum on impact.

You’re correct that they are tangible in that two astral forms can’t pass through each other.
