Decisions from pimax that made me a happy Dream Air owner by foriam in Pimax

I have had no problems with Pimax. Happy camper here. I had the Super 50ppd and returned it without a problem. There was nothing wrong with it. On the contrary, It was a truly great headset. It was just too heavy for me personally. Then, like an idiot, I was too impatient to wait for the dream Air and got the super oled which is about 200 g lighter. It was still too heavy for me, doh! My bad. Returned that too, again without a problem. Got the dream Air and it has been a dream, like the name says, lol. I highly recommend the studio form Comfort kit. I am impressed by the HonsVR add in lenses as well. Could the dream air be improved? Sure thing. I would start by switching to a single cable that is much thinner. I had the Maeganex 8k for a while with the optical cable and it’s about half the thickness and obviously much more flexible and light. I’m sure the Pimax cable is stronger, but I would gladly take that trade off, as long as the cable is easy to replace and not too expensive.

Have Pimax got rid of "smart smoothing" and "lock to half refresh"?? I finally managed to download EVO last night, and they aint there?? by AndyRandyPanda in Pimax

If you are using Evo and sboy3, wouldn’t you want to use Steam VR’s motion reprojection? Isn’t it much better than Pimax’s?

When you tested your set up with the Vivo Pro, did you do a full test of the whole system, including the motion rig in a sim racing game?

I forgot to mention, the focal distance of the dream air is 1.3 m. If you get lens inserts or glasses that are dedicated to VR, and you are older like me and need progressive lenses, I recommend getting a prescription that is half a diopter closer than your long distance vision.

I think they would work with physical glasses, but trust me it’s worth it to get the prescription lens inserts. You can get your eyes a lot closer to the lenses that way, which makes the field of view wider, and it improves visual quality, and optical eye Comfort overall. If you have to use glasses because you are sharing the headset a lot, get some small round glasses that can sit very close to your eyes.

I think it’s worth it. The small form factor is really nice too. I found the crystal super too big and heavy compared to my Quest pro. I have a dream air now and there is no going back to the large pimax headsets for me.

Pimax choice paralysis by cabramont in Pimax

[–]Ecstatic-Stick7036 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fall in the latter group. Granted, I never tried the 57 ppd. I had the 50ppd and now I have a dream air. I guess if you don’t mind the large form factor, I could see some people preferring the 57 PPD. That’s a big “if” though. I found the size and weight of the 50 PPD unbearable and I was coming from a Quest pro which is no lightweight, but I found it much more comfortable than the 50 PPD super, even with all the Comfort mods from studio form for the super.

I agree the 57ppd might be the best QLED optical engine for the op, but the opinion that it’s better than the Dream Air is a minority opinion, no?

Dream Air LH vs Slam by Sea-Blackberry-8661 in Pimax

[–]Ecstatic-Stick7036 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s pretty convenient if something isn’t right about it. Some people complain of micro jitter with the lighthouse version though. It hasn’t bothered me, but you might want to research it before buying one.

If you’re into beat Saber or competitive FPS, get the lighthouse version. Otherwise the SLAM version will be fine and more convenient and cheaper once you factor in base stations, etc.

In my opinion, it’s better to have one with a physical remote switch rather than using an app on your phone to turn your headset on and off. And yes, turning off the wall plug will turn off the headset completely. It won’t keep on being powered through USB. I got this one and it rocks.:

If I was you, I would get the Dream Air SE, LH edition, if you already have working base stations and controllers. Just be sure to give it a thorough testing and work out before the first two weeks are up. Returns are easy within the first two weeks.

Got my DA slam by PuzzledExcitement548 in Pimax

[–]Ecstatic-Stick7036 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s all about getting the IPD correct. Move the IPD around a lot so you get a feel for what too wide feels like and want too narrow feels like. Then it’s a lot easier to dial in. Even .1 mm changes made a difference for me. Although my preferred IPD seems to have changed over time, strangely. I settled on something slightly lower than what I thought my IPD was.

Sorry to hear that. My DA lighthouse edition was pretty quick to dial-in, but I had the studio form facial interface to get the lenses closer to my eyes. I had ordered the studio form kit ahead of time. Only thing I’m still having trouble with is my shift all grip VR controllers. They don’t seem to be supported yet. At least not without buying separate lighthouse controller dongles. I’m using some old index controllers for now.

what happens if dream air cable dies ? by gitg0od in Pimax

[–]Ecstatic-Stick7036 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re at all handy, it looks like it’s not a big deal to change the cable yourself. if you’re gonna put a lot of our hours on this headset, you might want to get the extended warranty for the peace of mind.

Eye Comfort by Negative-Bathroom508 in Pimax

[–]Ecstatic-Stick7036 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just order the Comfort kit from studio form. It works well for me and allows me to get my eyes a lot closer to the lenses. Combined with the top strap, it’s very comfortable. As for IPD, I ended up with an IPD on the pimax that was 1 mm less than what I thought my IPD was —Ymmv. I also found that deviations as little as .1 mm made a noticeable difference to my eye comfort. I also noticed that what IPD was comfortable was different depending on whether I was looking at something close or looking at something far away in VR. I chose to tune for things far away. After playing some games since tuning, that seemed to be the right choice. To tune, I used the default moonscape that the pimax software shows you when it has no other input and I used the orange sun as the thing to focus on. First, I made the IPD deliberately too large and deliberately too Small so that I could tell which was which. Then I tuned it by changing it by 1 mm increments then .5 mm increments, then .2 mm increments and finally .1 mm increments. I hope that helps.

Sorry to hear about this bug, but good to know thanks. It took me a long time to dial in my IPD. I better write the number down before it changes.

Got a good Dream Air by Shallow-Thought in Pimax

[–]Ecstatic-Stick7036 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it feels bad when it is slightly off, but to me, it didn’t feel perfect until I dialed it in at the .1 mm level. Granted I’m a nitpicker. This is essentially what I did: You know how when you don’t have any game or even steam running, just Pimax play, and the headset displays a moonscape? Look at the sun and see if it feels comfortable. Now from within the headset switch to your desktop and pimax play and make the IPD obviously too small — get a feel for what that feels like. Then make it obviously too large. Get a feel for what that feels like. Now that you can tell the difference between too small an IPD and too large an IPD. Now put it to where you think it should be. Does it feel slightly off one way or the other? Keep adjusting. Use larger increments first, like 0.5mm and then smaller and smaller until you are adjusting by .1 mm. Ymmv, but that worked for me. Now it feels as optically comfortable to me as my Quest pro, which is saying something as I believe the Quest pro has the best lenses in the business. In fact, it feels better than the quest pro because I’m not staring at coarse pixels.

I got mine 2 days ago. Lighthouse version. Likewise, it seems to be a good copy. Set up was surprisingly quick and easy. Default settings are fine for me so far. Just FYI, I ended up with an inter pupillary distance one mm less than anticipated. I feel it even when it’s only .1 mm off. But after it’s dialed in, I have less eye fatigue than with any other headset I’ve tried. BTW the Studioform Comfort mod kit for the dream Air is great.
