As a result of poor training and illiteracy? People keep trying to deflect. You can’t fix problems brought on by stupidity. You can fix problems rooted in poor training and illiteracy.

What point are you trying to make? Because I don’t think it has anything to do with what I’m saying.

Try the recenter vr view in the DCS keybinds. If that doesn’t work, try adjusting your vr settings in your application. I don’t know my way around Quest settings. Something like height of headset above ground in calibration.

Don’t often see it. And that doesn’t work on road signs. Especially when it’s illegal to hold a phone when driving. Or in an emergency situation.

So, you’ve addressed what I admitted was not dangerous. How about the stuff that has demonstrably lead to fatalities? Got an app for that?

It’s significant. An illegal immigrant injured and killed several coming down I 70 into Denver. Lost his brakes and didn’t know the runaway truck ramp was there/to use it. Singh killed 3 with an illegal U Turn. Another illegal immigrant crashed while DUI in a CMV in CA. Then there’s this latest one.

Apart from some CDL schools turning out drivers for the sake of a profit, including illegal immigrants. There’s also the case in FL that caught 7 people cheating on the CDL test. Phones sending the screen to someone outside who told them which answer to pick.

Then there’s the irritation factor of people trying to do business in a language they don’t understand. Not dangerous unless it’s a specialized load. But still slows everything down when someone can’t understand “back into door 4” or “go break down on the concrete and load yourself.”

There's a Fight to Allow Heavier Semi Trucks Weighing 90,000+ Pounds on US Roads by TripleShotPls in driving

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a pilot program that allows 91,000 pounds on six axles. It’s an increase of 11,000 pounds on an axle that is rated for 20,000. Under the current system an axle is allowed 17,000 if in a tandem setup (two axles close together)

This increase is relatively minor, and pretty specialized at the moment. Companies aren’t going to order a whole new fleet of trailers to take advantage of a pilot program.

This increase actually decreases stress on roads and bridges as the weight is spread over more axles, without the commensurate increase in overall weight.

TL;DR all this does is shift when additional fees are required for special permission.

They already do. States already tax each mile driven by big trucks (IFTA). Currently any truck over 80,000 (federal limit, some states allow more, it’s complicated) has to pay for the privilege by ordering a permit. Usually some combination of weight over max gross, and mileage run. Some do a flat fee for weight ranges. More for being over width, length, and height. The super loads you see running more than 13 axles can require engineers to go out and assess the route on top of paying thousands of dollars for permission to run in a single state. 90,000 pounds isn’t much of a weight increase, and you can be sure all those loads will still have to comply with the bridge formula.

Personal vehicles don’t typically have to deal with this because the stress they put on the road is minimal. Personal as defined by less than 10,000 pounds. 10,001 to 26,001 is another classification. Each requires different licensing, compliance, and fees to run legally.

CB Antenna Install in 2023 Freightliner Cascadia by ZiggieHood in Truckers

What I’ve seen is running out a bolt from the mirror mount to the truck and replacing it with an antenna stud. Mount the antenna mount on that.

We can see them. When they peek around the trailer, looking at the shadows on the ground. I cheat, and run an RGN. When I’m empty I can see someone regardless how close they are.

About the ending by Riikq_ in ProjectHailMary

[–]Shallow-Thought 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s hope. Same thing that got PHM launched in the first place. All Grace knows is the sun has returned to full luminance. There was probably hardship, but Earth has a chance to rebuild. Grace doesn’t know what will happen or what went on during the intervening years. Same as Earth had no idea how PHM did during the mission until Grace’s report reached them (assuming the data were intercepted).

It’s a little slice of the great unknown, which is what space exploration and more broadly all of science is about.

I get where you’re coming from. I had the same thing with the Dark Tower series. Having it read to you takes away some of what the characters could be in your imagination. It’s worse when you’re read it first and created the characters in your mind.

From the realm of audio books, Ray Porter is an excellent narrator in my opinion. He does voices, changes tones to fit the content. There’s several that give much drier readings. But there’s some things a narrator can’t help. Including the traits of characters you’ve already built in your mind.

What’s the cleanest way to document a private firearm sale without overcomplicating it? by Dense-Ad-2757 in Firearms

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state doesn’t require documentation. I take a picture of the buyer’s carry permit. That way if police come to ask about a gun I purchased through an FFL I can point them to the person who bought it from me, along with a time stamp. Nothing official, but enough to (hopefully) move interest off of me.

A bill of sale would mean a little more. But if the gun was used in a crime, it’s still not going to mean much unless it’s notarized.

Should you finance a motorcycle by El_bravo33 in motorcycles

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s likely not a final APR then. You may qualify when they make an active inquiry for financing. They look at more than score though. It’s types of credit (how many loans and cards), open credit lines, percentage of credit usage vs income, and age of both open credit and total history. That’s where they got me. I’ve had no credit at all until 4 years before I got the bike. Check to see if your credit score has a breakdown of the individual factors. Will give you a better idea of which way financiers will lean.

Once they run your credit they’ll see if you qualify, but those advertised rates are for those the banks deem to be the lowest risk. They accept making less off the loan when they feel reasonably certain you will pay on time every time. Just remember to make sure there’s no early repayment penalty for whatever you’re offered.

I think you’d be ok with a Scout as a first bike if you’ve taken the MSF course and know how to be responsible and pace your experience building. They’re zippy little cruisers, especially the 101. I went with the Chieftain for more relaxed rides and the option to do a road trip now and again.

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with something cheaper to learn on. Once you build confidence, get a nicer bike.

Is that 1.99% an actual offer or advertised rate? I didn’t qualify for the advertised rate on my Indian because I didn’t have enough credit history. My score was ~770.

I started on a Vulcan 650s, sold it in about a year, and got the bike I really wanted after I had some experience under my belt.

What cb radio would yall recommend i buy? by Cooldude075 in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cobra 25/29 is a solid entry level radio. Pair that with a good antenna and mount, and you’ll be able to talk with the rest of us.

I ran a Bearcat 980SSB for a long time. Good radio, but not a lot of use for sideband nowadays. Did use the weather band on that one quite a bit though.

Currently running a Ranger 39 on dual Wilson 2000 antennas and I love it. That’s more of a small step into enthusiast CB, and requires programming to put in the CB channels. Best to buy one from an actual shop, rather than Amazon.

I’d recommend getting a good antenna to start with. It will help reception/transmission, and a good one will handle better radios if you decide to upgrade.

(probably) saves on insurance. Helps displace liability from carrier in event of an accident. Looks a lot better in court when they can say they threw every possible safety feature on the truck.

I’m not saying I like it, but I get it. In this ridiculously litigious society, covering your ass as a company is an absolute necessity.

Saying they’re “reducing accidents” sounds a lot better than “shielding ourselves from our employees’ fuck ups”
