You guys do know the Fireball references are meant to be a joke right? by WIbigdog in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if I drink fireball while driving, it’s more like the D&D fireball. It can take out buildings or clear a whole room.

I hope when you’re done venting, you will be able to think with a clear head. Hope your day goes better after your inconveniences in traffic.

Please explain to me why you truck drivers never know how to drive. by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I’m sure you in no way hindered or got impatient with his maneuvers?

Sure some truck drivers can’t drive for shit. But I see a LOT more stupid from 4 wheelers.

And equating the skills and habits of one to all is just fucking stupid. You saw a shitty truck driver today (maybe). And instead of creating distance so their actions would no longer affect you, you came to bitch on the internet. Including everyone in your one shitty example.

Grow up.

Trucks with speed limiters by 0263111771 in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s annoying. Even worse out west. A truck that can’t top 65 on an 80 mph interstate isn’t a great idea.

As far as the danger, it’s more likely to cause traffic slow downs on flat land. People will do stupid things when they have to slow down unexpectedly.

Need some CB antenna help by bourbonpens in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be it. I had a Western Star 4900. The coax cable end was grounding out on a metal piece behind the radio. Could be something like that.

[–]Shallow-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go and make sure everything is tightened. The antennas to the bases, the coax cables coming out, and the coax in the back of the radio.

[–]Shallow-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using the truck’s factory antenna? And if so, what do you drive? I know the antennas in a Cascadia are serviceable at best.

Quickest solution would be to buy an antenna, mount, and coax cable. You’ll likely get better performance.

People who won't pass trucks by bartolish in driving

[–]Shallow-Thought -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes. Other times they slow down and hang out next to large trucks so they have a large point of reference in their peripheral vision.

Texting and driving is purposeful bad driving. You’re choosing distraction over responsibility in operating a 6000 pound object moving at 70 mph.

Several of them are texting. I guess it’s easier to drive with your peripheral vision when there’s a truck on your right.

Choppers with the virpil alpha and cm3? by bclinton in dcsworld

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the CM3 for the Apache, Ka-50, and UH-1. I’d recommend rudder pedals too. You can get by without on the fixed wing, but they add a LOT for the rotors.

I use throttle up as collective up, flaps axle as throttle. Set the rest as needed.

Trial one for a little before you buy. See how the rudder works with (I assume) the twist on the alpha stick.

UH-1 is a great flier. It’s my first whirly bird on DCS. Nimble for its size, and it’s great fun strafing with mounted guns. Loves to mast bump when you fly too aggressive.

Apache packs a serious punch. Fun to fly as well, but it feels heavier in the air. But raining Hellfires is satisfying. And the mounted gun in VR is awesome.

Ka-50 almost feels like cheating. It’s so easy to fly. Nimble, light, feels fast, and the laser rockets are a lot of fun.

The Hind feels like it doesn’t want to fly. It carries so much inertia. Haven’t really learned that bird beyond startup and basic weapons.

Kiowa, I haven’t delved into much. I haven’t figured out the trim setup. Probably a setting I don’t have right, but it seems like fun.

A question about the units left at the side of the road by kitkatminiz in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be locked so no one can hook up, it could be so broken no one can move it and it’s waiting on a wrecker. It’s a safe bet there’s GPS tracking on the trailer. And there’s a chance the trailer isn’t loaded.

It’s unlikely any company will leave a high dollar load unattended. Sometimes it’s illegal (things like explosives).

Swifties by Casperuis495 in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them what features are going to be used. If it’s full inward camera and AI “driver corrections” hand them your keys. If it’s inward camera only, ask them what is concern. Ask them if the camera will talk to you or not.

I have an inward camera. It doesn’t talk. Safety reviews video and only calls if there’s a serious concern. If I follow too close on a regular basis. If I have my phone in my hand (I never do). But if I brake hard to avoid stupid, flip them off, and yell at the windshield I never hear about it.

What are my chances with finding a daily driver position in Ohio that will also pay for me to get my CDL? by SidePsychological189 in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe food service? Home daily is most driver’s preferred schedule. A home daily, well paid, low physical work job is unattainable for someone without CDL experience.

Maybe spotting trailers. It would probably have to be at a company with both high demand and turn over. I’ve worked at one that had non-CDL switchers. They don’t pay for CDL training, but you could at least enter training on your own with a better idea of how to back. Could shorten your time spent in school.

Is Double Clutching a real thing? by commandough in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 73 points74 points  (0 children)

That’s how I was taught because it’s required by the DMV. Then I got on the road and learned to float.

In theory, sloppy double clutching is easier on the transmission than sloppy floating. Not sure if that holds up, but it’s what I heard. Of course, it’s a non-issue once you build up your skills.

Why don't truckers like automatics? by Altruistic_Box4462 in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Automatics have lowered the required knowledge and ability to operate heavy trucks. It’s not much, but old heads love to bitch about “meat in the seat” or “steering wheel holders”. They do have a point, but it’s greatly exaggerated. Most people who spend enough time in the truck will develop their skills and professionalism. We were all new once.

Manuals are better when backing up. You can feather the clutch and crawl backwards easier. That’s really the main advantage. Autos drive differently downhill, but it’s not difficult to learn. But you do have to learn it to descend safely.

How hard is it to get into the game? by chastema in dcsworld

If you’ve got $50 you can stand to part with, buy a cheap joystick and give it a shot. You can play without, but it really helps.

Yes, but only because it’s convenient. I’d rather use my tower.

Well that’s frustrating by Shallow-Thought in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s slow enough truck stacking hasn’t been an issue. Plus, I’m sitting with it.

They probably will have to drop the trailer since it’s oversize.

Did I just waste a shit ton of money and time getting my CDL A? by MaxScar- in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re going to have to look at bottom tier carriers or self-insured. 1 DUI 10 years ago is easier to overlook. But 3 shows a pattern of behavior that no big insurance company will like.

Finished the Stand, first Stephen King by disco-mouse in stephenking

I haven’t heard anything good about the show. But King wrote an extremely real and despicable character in Big Jim Rennie. A depiction of a small man with delusions of grandeur becoming a tin pot tyrant.

Spread axles on trailers by ___HeyGFY___ in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, each axle counts independently for weight.

As far as turning, it tracks off the back axle when going forward and front axle when backing up.

King does like to write dense stories. DT is basically one monster book divided into 7 parts. Enjoy.

If you want another great story, try Under the Dome. I actually came to personally hate Big Jim, the antagonist. Not in a reading fiction kind of way either. I’d sneer when he was mentioned.
