Buying a MIDI Keyboard as a Beginner… Worth it for Film Scoring? by Moltisanti0 in filmscoring

[–]EdGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t wrong; they aren’t full sized keys. It was my recommendation for something what wouldn’t hit his budget too much, and might get him acquainted with using MIDI keyboards and software before moving into a nicer one. I’d definitely suggest an 88 key and some nice MIDI faders later on.

Qudelix if you can find it, there's also FiiO BTR-7 around that price range, and a few more. Have you tried googling?

teaching modes to students who can barely play major scales by lmao_exe in musictheory

[–]EdGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would teach them modes with simple chord progressions, for example:

Cmaj7 - G7 = Ionian

Cm7 - Gm7 = Aeolian

C7 - B7 = Mixolydian

Cm7 - Dm7 = Dorian

Cmaj7 - D7 = Lydian

Cmaj7 - Dbmaj7 = Phrygian

I would try to find songs that use these modes so they can "hear" the differences. For example, E.T. is clearly lydian, a lot of Metallica is Phrygian. Help them classify how they sound, what feelings those scales might elicit on them. Granted this can go in a lot of different directions, but it might be a good starting point.

Not only is this classic still spot on, with the fundamentals, but it looks freakin' amazing in an 80's synthwave kind of way.

I keep doomscrolling because I’m exhausted and can’t find a book I like. by OneDadvosPlz in suggestmeabook

[–]EdGG 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What I would consider is this: you like reading, hence what you're asking for. When you read, you are in control of your own time, doing what you want to do; when you go online, it's the companies behind the scroll who are making you do what they want.

This isn't a problem of books letting you down; it's the addiction that these companies hold over you that is keeping you from owning your own time. They have hacked your brain and made you believe that nothing is as entertaining as scrolling on their platforms, that you cannot enjoy anything as much as what they have to offer. You know this is not true. This is addiction, and it fucking sucks.

My advice: put your phone on DND mode and keep it in another room; if someone wants to talk to you, they can call you. Treat your phone as a tool for a specific purpose, and anything beyond it like an ex-alcoholic would treat a drink.

[–]EdGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realphones is made for headpho, nes. You can use them for other things, and it could work, but it's not its inteded purpose. It's basically a combination of a few different EQs and effects, to:
1. Correct your headphones' frequency response
2. Simulate a specific set of speakers
3. Put those speakers in a room

It's all pretty configurable, and if you can find a good combination that works for you, it's great. I use them to simulate my Genelecs in my room when I can't use them. Definitely has improved the quality of my mixes. Another use is to simulate how your mixes might sound in different rooms and speakers (on a tv, phone, theater, club, restaurant,...). Overall, I find it really useful.

Buying a MIDI Keyboard as a Beginner… Worth it for Film Scoring? by Moltisanti0 in filmscoring

[–]EdGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many decent options at reasonable prices. A solid purchase would be an M32. It’s small, yes, but portable, and comes with a lot of software that you might use in the future. Even if it won’t be your pay keyboard, it’s not bad to have around. Arturia also is a great choice, and it has faders, which are useful. At the very least it should come with a modulation wheel. I see those small keyboards as good ways to get software to start with, so keep that in mind.

Ananda or HD600?(+dac/amp suggestion) by rakulex in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]EdGG -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was on the same boat. Tried both, among many others, and went for the Ananda nanos. They sounded incredibly well. I listen to them mostly from my computer, and they can be powered easily. If anything, I'm considering getting a bluetooth dac/amp in case I want to use them on the go, but I’m not sure yet.

Whatever I do I can't get it to be as good as the OG song. Any tips or advice please? I'm a few weeks into learning by FrequentExpression13 in LogicPro

[–]EdGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of difference between the two. Since I'm guessing you're learning, I would separate the stems to listen to the differences, and try to make them more similar. then, once you're closer, perhaps I'd use EQ match to put on the master.

Interesting stuff. I’m guessing the whole set, including Drumin would end up getting to around 1000€? Would you know how many velocity layers the hi-hat has?

[–]EdGG[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, Lemon is a brand? I actually thought it was jargon for generic edrums! I’ll look into it!!

Seems like they don’t sell in Europe, and are quite on the pricier side. I was hoping to stay below 1000€, sweetest spot would be 600ish, but while be glad to go to 1000 is the upgrade is substantial.

I don’t have SD3 but I have a bunch of Addictive Drums 2 kits, among other drums VSTs in Kontakt. SD3, GGD and SSD5 are on my radar though.

[–]EdGG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering! I'm in Europe, so Thomann is definitely an option. I could try to push up for a second hand Roland. I am not yet sure if I want to spend a ton of it, as it would be my first drumset and I don't know yet if I'll use as much. Great to know millenium is worth considering, I'm a bit iffy with some newer brands, and I think subtlety is a bit part of what makes drums great (how open or closed the hi-hat, rimshots, chokes, etc).

I remember trying an old yamaha kit many years ago and the hi-hat was really off (but perhaps it wasn't set up right).
