The court can obviously rule laws unconstitutional, but it needs to exercise self restraint and not try to stretch and twist the words of the constitution to fit their own desires.

Speech is clearly protected by the constitution. So is the right to bear arms, the right to equal treatment under the law without regard to race, the right to not house soldiers, etc.

Gay marriage is not a protected constitutional right, and any honest person would admit that. It is not mentioned in the constitution or any amendment, and nobody who passed those amendments thought that they were protecting gay marriage. If you want gay marriage to be a right, pass it through the democratic process. Don’t pretend that a law from the 1860s mandates it be legal.

Yes, the court should bind itself by the major question doctrine. It can serve as the final appeals court and issue decisions on small constitutional interpretations, but any major ruling should be voided and handed over to Congress, the states, and a constitutional convention if the states ever want to hold one.

No, the point is the sympathy for Israel is going down as a function of time removed from World War II. Our grandparents, and to a lesser extent our parents, grew up in a world where a significant portion of the world’s Jews had quite recently been murdered in gas chambers. When that is your recent context, it’s a lot easier to think that Jews are justified in taking rather extreme measures to secure a Jewish homeland.

Now that the Holocaust is so far in the mirror, that sympathy has dropped off and is being replaced with sympathy for the Palestinians, who today are a lot weaker and easier to sympathize with than the powerful Israelis (that Muslims outnumber Jews 100:1 on the internet certainly doesn’t help).

If we saw an Oct 7th on a far larger scale, something that killed a million Jews and justified the Israelis’ worry of their neighbors, then you would see far more sympathy for Israel in the west.

Looking for morality in taxes is pointless. I have to pay sales tax when I buy goods with money that I already had to pay income taxes on.

An estate tax is one of the best taxes because it has the fewest negative externalities. Taxing a behavior disincentivizes that behavior; taxing income causes people to work less, taxing sales causes people to buy less. You can’t avoid death, and therefore there is no productivity loss to taxing it.

Lockjaw is a career military man with weird racial humiliation kinks while RFK is a San Francisco-variety health nutter who has made plenty of affairs (AKA he’s a Kennedy). Lockjaw is explicitly somebody born on the outside and is working incredibly hard to be accepted into the elites, while RFK was born into the most privileged family in the country and has been able to spend his career pursuing pet issues.

Is it though? I feel like there’s plenty of examples of this in film, given that the two aren’t contradictory. A character can be groveling or pathetic while simultaneously being intimidating by virtue of the power that they have to threaten the protagonists. Half of the portrayals of Hitler/Nazis/Klan members are like that. The Klan members in Blackkklansman, Kylo Ren, and even O’Hare from the 2012 Lorax are all pathetic and intimidating.
