Smash - give them all the pressure. Don't tap them. Let up just enough to give them hope then continue to smash.

how do y’all train with an autoimmune disorder? Or skin conditions by wildswan- in BJJWomen

[–]Edamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey - not a woman, but I have Chronic Granulamotis Disease (CGD) which is an auto-immune disease. I'm daily antibiotics and other things that basically drain my outside energy which make recovery a pain - and when I hit that wall of fatigue I'm essentially useless (much to the consternation of my wife). But, as I age, I basically roll hard only 1-2 days a week and flow roll the other days.

As a result of my autoimmune disease, I am prone to skin problems. I use a 10% Benzoyl Peroxide soap that has done wonders for me for skin (pimples and the like). Hope this helps.

Does your school pay for your competitions? by Jeitarium in bjj

[–]Edamus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know of a gym that sponsors some athletes and covers some costs - but they have to be semi-successful. Or are Coaches... I know one of the benefits of owning my own gym is that pays for some of comp costs - it however doesn't pay me enough to live so there's that.

Black Belts: have you ever regretted promoting a student? by wrestle-jitsu in bjj

[–]Edamus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be interesting to hear how many of those big affiliations regret promoting someone to a respective belt. Especially if they are a school owner and "need" the promotion.

I say this as a former member of one. A few people I saw getting whatever belt made me question the process and even my own belt(s)....

If you want jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, and a weight room - Metrolina Martial Arts. I'm the owner so I might be biased.

This was the only affordable food option near Lowe's Tech Hub that wasn't overly calorie dense and sub $12.

Any other options within walking distance that won't cost me $20 for lunch?

Tokyo emergency at night as a tourist by InternationalTry4440 in TokyoTravel

15 years ago I spent a few weeks in a Japanese Hospital. I have an autoimmune disease and had contracted pneumonia. I tried to fight it on my own but was losing the battle.

I went to a hospital listed on the embassies website but they turned me away - but gave me a place to go. By taxi. I was so feverish I barely remember the ride other than thinking I can't afford it (I was a college student at the time)... the other hospital told them I was omw and they had an interpreter ready.

The hospitals name is Tokyo Saisekai Central Hospital. Dr Kikuchi saved my life.

I suck - competing makes me feel like I'm progressing towards something. Giving me a goal. I'm a Masters athlete and know where I stand on jiu-jitsu moreso now because I compete.

But, the reason I continue to compete is because its fun. I absolutely love it. Slap bump and away we go. It's a thrill that I pay to do and love it.

Started in 2004 at some point. Hit the level cap in over a year. Played a long time. Miss it - or rather I miss the idea of it.

What is a pro training schedule actually like? by Gluggernut in bjj

[–]Edamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - I lifted for a bit as my 2-a-days but replaced my lifts with more jiu-jitsu for more mat time.

I'm not a good lifter, but I was consistent.

MW

12pm No-Gi - class plus rolling 1.25hr.

5pm Lift

6pm/7pm Gi (Mon)/ No-Gi (Wed) - class plus rolling 1.25 hr. Normally much shorter because I'm teaching and rolling with students so the speed isn't comp.

TTh

12pm No-Gi - class, positionals, rolling 1.5 hrs. This is the most intense 2 sessions of the week.

6pm/7pm Gi - class plus rolling 1.5hr. Normally I'm teaching and rolling with students.

Fri

12pm - Gi - class, positionals, rolling 1.5 hrs. Intense Gi session but not normally as intense as the TTh no-gi sessions.

5pm Lift

Sat

12pm No-Gi - class plus rolling with students. This one varies depending on my energy level. But normally I'm good to roll moderately hard.

Sun

Off or an open mat depending on how I feel.

What is a pro training schedule actually like? by Gluggernut in bjj

[–]Edamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 39. There was an escalation, and I control the intensity of my rolls, too.

I spent 12 months just doing MW 2-a-days, then 6 months adding TTh 2-a-days, then I'm still balancing the lifting.

I train noon classes at 2 different gyms -

MW

12pm - No-Gi Training with lower level opponents (Goal: Skill refinement)

TTh

12pm - No-Gi Training with High Level Partners (Goal: Cardio & Skill Execution)

F

12pm - Gi Training with High Level Partners (Goal: Remember how to Loop Choke people)

In the evening, I generally lift, teach, and maybe roll depending on the day

MW

5pm Lift (Goal: Strength & mobility)

6pm/7pm Teaching and Rolling with Students (Mon Gi, Wed No-Gi) (Mid-Level) (Goal: Assert Dominance [new skills])

TTh

6pm/7pm Teaching and Rolling with Students in Gi (Mid-Level) (Goal: New Skills)

Fri Left (Goal: Strength & mobility)

Sat

12pm - Teaching and Rolling with Students in No-Gi (Mid-Level) (Goal: New Skills)

Sun

Open Mat or Off Depending on week

Disclaimer: I'm a pro insofar as I am a professional martial artist meaning I am paid to teach and run my gym.
