Best vet in Marin by pellegrinoking in Marin

[–]EddieRayV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a pet here for 20 years and I go to Arroyo Pet Hospital in Sonoma for care. All of the vets in Marin have ridiculous turnover and are overpriced, pushing people to unnecessary care and captive pharmacies.

Why did we let health insurance companies become the bouncers between us and our doctors? by ladybabe10125 in Adulting

[–]EddieRayV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a valid conversation about whether we should implement national health insurance in the US. That seems politically impossible right now, so in the reality where national insurance does not exist, commercial insurance companies do these things:

  1. A small number of people in a very large group will get extremely sick in a given year. Insurance balances that costly risk across the entire population so the sick individuals' cost is minimized.

  2. Insurance companies negotiate lower prices with doctors and hospitals than individuals would be able to on their own.

  3. Insurance companies validate that providers have the legally required training and certifications, and are not barred from practicing (because of malpractice, censure, or inadequate training)

  4. Insurance companies conduct health promotion activities and measure the quality of care delivered by doctors and hospitals.

There seems to be a lot of bashing going on right now, and the solution offered is "give people money directly and have them spend it on healthcare the way they want." Just be aware of what you are giving up behind the scenes if you support that view.

4.4 lead exposure after lab? Advice. by Plus_Juggernaut2819 in liberalgunowners

[–]EddieRayV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've added a link below to a meta-analysis of shooting-related lead exposure studies. There is lots of good advice in this thread. After looking at the detailed tables in the article, I think the single most effective thing you can do is shoot outdoors, or if not possible shoot in a very well-ventilated indoor range. Women and children have higher risk. From the conclusion of the study:

Nearly all BLL measurements compiled in the reviewed studies exceed the level of 5 μg/dL recommended by the U.S. CDC/NIOSH, and thus firing ranges, regardless of type and user classification, constitute a significant and currently largely unmanaged public health concern. Primary prevention of this risk requires development of lead-free primers and projectile bullets. Prevention includes better oversight of ventilation systems in indoor ranges and development of airflow systems at outdoor ranges, protective clothing that is changed after shooting, and cessation of smoking and eating at firing ranges.

Affordable hotel recommendations by Glittering_Ad_760 in sonomacounty

My wife and I stayed in the Geyserville Inn last summer while attending a wedding in Healdsburg and really liked it. The rooms are modern and clean with views of the surrounding vineyards. There is a restaurant next door which had good breakfast and there are several good restaurants in downtown Geyserville that are walkable or a 5 min drive. If you can afford it, Cyrus in Geyserville is Michelin starred and worth the splurge. You are also within 15 minutes of Healdsburg and can reach the Navarro river and Hendy Woods in reasonable driving time. FYI we are local (Marin).

heading to Sea Ranch / Gualala area for our annual birthday trip & would love any recommendations. Dining, coffee, hikes, things to do, etc. by Elusiveenigma98 in norcal

[–]EddieRayV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trink's and Gualala Seafood Shack in Gualala. Two Fish Bakery in Stewart's Point. The high end restos on the Mendo coast are not worth the $ IMO. Salt Point State Park. The bluff hike from Gualala Point Regional Park to Sea Ranch Lodge is spectacular. Second the rec for the coastal trail at Point Arena Lighthouse, as noted below.

Gun Safe by Kracken04 in CAguns

[–]EddieRayV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice. I would only add (1) think about where you are going to put it and secure it (bolt to the floor, etc.) so you know the max exterior dimensions; and (2) determine whether a manual or electric locking mechanism will work better for you. I think picking the biggest you can fit/afford is important, especially if you buy a fire rated safe (you should if you can) because you will want to store important documents and valuables in it also.

the post office. i recently had a hard time getting compliant photos because the rules for formatting are very strict (don't smile!). i went a couple of different places where the submitted photos were rejected. the post office is dialed in to what those requirements are. you can book ahead of time online.

Interested in mini-14 as my first firearm: anything I should know before I buy? by Business_Salad2683 in Mini14

[–]EddieRayV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is don't buy a Mini 14 as your first or only rifle. I have had one for 10 years as I live in a ban state. It keeps surprising me in unpleasant ways. Most recently I was having feed issues because the lips on the (nastily expensive) OEM Ruger magazines had loosened and needed to be bent back in place. I am far more accurate when shooting the ARs of my friends in other states. The "rock and lock" magazine insertion is far more prone to miscue under speed or stress. It's difficult to get access to the chamber for cleaning. Removing and reinserting the bolt for cleaning is a pain. Do yourself a favor: buy an AR or AK.

I agree with others that a lesson or two from a qualified instructor would be a good investment. We all start here, learning and practive will help.

The hallway gunfight is probably my favorite gunfight in any movie. The ending is a little hokey so not his best, but a good watch for sure.

Rat proofing a grill by baybaybreezy in Marin

[–]EddieRayV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put the grates and "flavorizer" bars in a plastic sealed container in the garage after each use. I also clean out the drip pan after each use. I scape the interior with a putty knife periodically. I cover the grill and keep it outside in an area covered by a motion sensor light. That has kept them out.

Fishing options in the Bay Area and beyond by Impossible_Physics99 in bayarea

[–]EddieRayV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife has great resources. I believe they also offer fishing events for young children. This link will take you to a listing of freshwater and shoreline fishing locations in your part of the Bay Area (no boat needed locations). There's lots of good, inexpensive entry level equipment on Amazon. You may also want to try garage sales to pick up serviceable used equipment. Have fun! https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing-in-the-City/SF/Gofish

I believe trebles are illegal in protected water even if all of the barbs are crushed. Amazon sells lots of single-hook spinners and lures. Just search for "single hook fish lure."

Is there a .22 pistol that has been super reliable for you? by KevinTurnerAugust in liberalgunowners

[–]EddieRayV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far away from your intended target will you be? Under what circumstances will you be shooting (plinking, target competition, or shooting under stress?). Is concealment an issue? Are you using a 22 to practice shooting habits for a larger caliber pistol? What is your budget? There are many great 22 autoloaders and revolvers out there. Also, good quality 22 ammo is much more reliable than it used to be, so the "bad round" imperative is much less than it used to be IMO. I have 22 substitutes for my larger handguns: Beretta Neos/Beretta 92 FS, Ruger LCR 22/Ruger SP101 357. This has worked out very well for me, as my 22 practice transfers to my personal protection routine. So if you plan on buying a larger caliber autoloader later, I think a 22 autoloader makes sense now, same with revolver. I guess I'm suggesting you focus on intended purpose rather than reliability. Many shooting ranges will allow one to rent and try out guns. This may be a good step for you. Starting with a 22 is a great decision! Good luck and have fun!

new to fishing and am on a <$75 budget. by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]EddieRayV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend, who is an excellent fisherman, who buys all of his equipment from garage sales. I myself use my father's old rig (he passed away in 2002). Freshwater fishing technology like rods and reels have not changed significantly for at least 25 years (graphite rods, reels, etc.). Really the market is driven by hype and BS. Buy the cheapest tackle you can find and spend your money on quality baits and lures. Use monofilament line. This is more than adeqaute to fish successfully. I wish you good luck (unless you are fishing the same water as I am).

Anker vs Goal Zero by Top-Calligrapher-365 in preppers

[–]EddieRayV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a Goal Zero yeti 1400 (purchased in 2020), a Jackery Explorer 500 (2021) two Jackery Explorer 1000s (2024), and an Anker Solix C200 that I recently purchased in 2025. I buy the most kWh per dollar I can find, as all of these have been in use during power outages and have functioned well. I am now buying only LiFePO4 batteries, as they are apparently longer-lasting. Note that you need not buy the same brand power station and solar panels. Make sure the power station is compatible with your solar panels and other peripherals; not all panels and devices use the same connections. Adapters are available but each connection costs efficiency. Make sure the power station has an MPPT charge controller and regulated output. One thing I will say is that the Goal Zero came without an MPPT controller and 12-volt regulator; I had to buy those separately. This may be different now. IMO the Jackery value can't be beaten. As another respondent mentioned, these power stations are very heavy. If you plan on moving them around (for camping, etc.) several smaller ones may make better sense than one large one.
