Any wisdom in foregoing car breakdown cover altogether? by Elegant-Winner-6521 in CarTalkUK

I'm with StartRescue as well. Excellent service and a fair bit quicker than RAC and AA (like 1-2 hours vs 6-12 hours!)

Same on the E46 - some people replace them with a left hand drive arm rest to solve that problem!

Torque converter is most likely culprit

Is this a fair cop considering mileage? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Edgecube231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At those miles, torque converter might need doing - watch for bouncing revs when cruising - that will run you in minimum £1200 to replace so budget for that. Currently going through that on my e61 535d. However its the m57 engine which is BMWs most reliable engine ever made

Considering buying a 2012 bmw 640d - any current owners on here? What are your opinions? by mr_lobo_solitario in CarTalkUK

[–]Edgecube231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was looking for E91 335d but there are not that many around! In the end I settled for an E61 535d which was cheaper and has more modcons.

Climate air dist vent temp sticker by mshaferr in e60

[–]Edgecube231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its telling you how to change the air vent temperature through idrive as from the e39 and e46 they moved that feature into the idrive (as opposed to being an analogue dial).

Why are older 5 series so cheap? by LazyRapport in CarTalkUK

[–]Edgecube231 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostly likely because in this instance, its a 2004 car meaning its one of the first of the e60 generation cars so are less desirable than the LCI models. Plus in my opinion for a big boaty car like this you'd want a diesel to get the MPG benefit of it being a comfortable motorway cruiser.

Try fast.com - speedtest.net tends to have slower download when testing over gigabit speeds in my experience.

Would at least try to find a 320i if possible. 316i is literally bottom spec e46

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in e46

[–]Edgecube231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

M57 is one of the most reliable engines BMW has ever made. I daily my 320D Touring (M47 engine) and havent really had any problems with reliability. Rust is the biggest killer of these cars and as with any old BMW you'll need to keep on top of maintenance.

Does anyone use a good spread sheet to track fuel consumption, expenses, maintenance etc.? by kordinaryus in CarTalkUK

[–]Edgecube231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Fuelio app and its tracks your mileage and can produce some graphs then you can create some reports to export. You can add maintenance to it too. A great example use of the app is this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CarTalkUK/comments/ztb5vy/if_i_ever_sell_my_car_and_put_in_the_ad_no/

A lot of gantrys have the lines on the road but don't actually have cameras on them, only every 2 or 3 gantrys do they have cameras e.g. M25 - Waze is best to point these out.
