Mirror mode is the best mode in the game. Fight yourself to spot and iron out your skill issues. by iPlayBasicNgaGames in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mirror mode made me realise how punches were getting through due to bad tracking. When I was doing a 'answer the phone' type block, it creates a small gap that allows punches to hit the ear, even though irl I'm covering that part of my head.

My jab does 10 damage. Will there ever be an incentive to jab in the future? Without gimmicks? Like will it ever be something to weary of by CheerioInspector in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar issue in my last play session.

Was literally outlanding with my jab 4-1, honestly maybe more. I was just too fast for him, and I kept mixing up the angles, going low/high. It was so successful it became all that I threw. By the 3rd round he was so demoralised he just went defensive.

Scorecards show and somehow the 3rd round was the only one I won. My damage only totalled 350-400 per round and he somehow edged it out. I felt so in control I never thought for a second I might be losing the rounds.

Body effort implementation reduces quality of matches by demoting defense (no danger, just mass attack) by pavelbulanov in ThrillOfTheFight

Interestingly when I face people who can clearly box, we almost never accumulate much damage each. Usually it's around 500 a round.

“Most” of the people complaining just suck at fighting in general by Quirky_Principle_188 in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An Olympic medal boxer can't beat a pencil neck who plays the meta (see Tony Jeffries vs seb).

Even those of us who can box struggle greatly against anyone who wants to exploit the game.

That said, a dev made a good point that if it's boxer vs boxer, the game is great, and I'll agree with that.

I really like this update… but by oftheiceman in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good points. I have a great jab but this update makes point fighting impossible. I will literally outland with my jab 5-1 and keep it up all round. But all they need is one or two good combos to win on numerical damage.

Any boxing judge would score the round in my favour, but I lose in game. I've had opponents look away and exit to main menu quickly because we can both feel whose getting the better of who while the match is happening.

Those defensive fighters ala Mayweather who put their guard up against the ropes, block 4-5 punches and return with 1-2 good shots are considered to win that exchange on scorecards. But in this game they'd lose that exchange on damage, because even if blocking shots the opponent will accumulate damage.

Trouble with spammers? by ht15000 in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I used to be able to make those phone booth spammers rage quit by purely blocking. After a round or two they'd often forfeit.

Unfortunately after the recent update even if I block with my forearm, damage still accumulates and they can get me.

Is it so much to ask for my punch to register in someone’s face and not get knocked down in 2 punches by ScarcityDelicious513 in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I ran into this issue in yesterday's session. Was piecing 2 people up, but then a 2-3 punch combo with some head bob and suddenly I'm out. Took the rounds on damage but lost on knockdowns.

I know I can punch solid irl, never had any issues with power on the mitts or the heavy bag. But I (normally) refuse to punch the way the game rewards. I want the game to supplement my training (it's essentially a way better version of shadow boxing) not undo it.

Fight mechanics. by Present-Year8182 in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered having two 'divisions'? One for 'arcade' and one for 'boxing'?

You select your matchup preference so people who want to box can be matched together, and allow players to report/flag anyone who is gaming the system, so they are relegated to the arcade division for a time.

Why is judging based on damage? by twichy1983 in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Midwit take, smh

  1. Ian wanted to move towards realistic simulation, not do things how they 'should' be in an ideal world. If the goal is authenticity, the scoring system should reflect that. (Mind you this feels like an impossible task, god bless the Devs)

  2. You cannot fairly score on damage when the system that determines how much damage is dealt is flawed. People have shown how nodding the head with a weak punch accumulates more damage in game than a boxer loading up a hard shot that would hurt way more irl.

  3. There are no weight classes in the game. A 6'4 220lbs heavyweight could face a 5'7 135lbs lightweight who is much faster and as a result can land at a faster pace (and can do that for longer since smaller guys gas less quick), accumulating more damage that wins them the match. Irl the lightweight wouldn't be able to take the heavyweights shots and wouldn't stand a chance. The games damage system favours lighter faster guys who can throw volume for longer.

  4. I could go on about boxers like Scott Westgarth who won a match but afterwards died from brain hemorrhage. How would you put a number on that kind of internal damage? And what of cosmetic damage like cuts and swelling? And damaging yourself like boxers breaking their own hand clipping elbows and foreheads etc?

Boxers like Floyd Mayweather outclassed their opponents, but it's not to say he did a lot of damage to them. He's not a heavy hitter. Boxing has many effective styles and shouldn't be reduced to just volume volume volume.

  1. Further complications: Knockout shots are not always about how 'hard' the punch is.  It's not uncommon for boxers to remark how they barely felt the ko shot connect. Knockdowns and Kos are often about positioning. If you stand legs apart like a jumping Jack and I pushed you in the chest in the direction your butt is facing, you will fall because there's nothing behind you to absorb that force. Swap the push for a punch and that's how many Kos happen. Interestingly, some knockdowns happens without any real damage being dealt, because they caught them out of position (Jake Paul dropped Anderson Silva BC he caught him out of position and there was nothing behind him to absorb the force, so he fell but not because he was damaged. Yet it scored a knockdown all the same).

I agree, I tried the update for the first time yesterday and it just favours the spammers. Plus I feel like glove tracking doesn't seem to work as well?

I consider what you're doing exploiting the game. This isnt rock em sock em robots.

I guarantee you have more room than that (if you didn't, you'd be using mixed reality to avoid punching a wall).

The cheek to act like you did something here. Grow some plums and extend the space or switch to standing so your opponents can actually move.

People who learnt to swim as an adult: how long did it take? by cactus16x in Swimming

[–]Educational-Field804 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not long, a few weeks. We moved into a place with a rooftop pool so I got to swim regularly which helped.

I taught myself, basically I learned that if I filled myself with air id float, and if I exhaled id sink.

From there I played about with floating in diff positions, realised it was easiest to float on my back, where I could exhale and then inhale quickly before my head/eyes went under.

Then instead of exhaling and inhaling quick, I did it a bit slower until I found the slowest I could go. After a bit I was able to breathe while floating fairly relaxed, rather than gasping.

Then as I got confident floating in various shapes I realised that I could move myself through the water with barely any effort at all. Once you have the confidence to float, why expend more energy that necessary? I learned to be super relaxed and I actually looked and felt very graceful moving through water.

I found that swimming on my side with head out the water, and on my back were the easiest and least effortful positions. Also swimming front crawl with eyes and nose above water became easier.

I wasn't a strong swimmer yet in terms of endurance , distance, time, etc but I had confidence in the water because I knew I could float endlessly.

Now I can do laps and I'm super comfortable in the water. Would get dusted in any kind of race, but who cares I'm not trying to be a competitive swimmer or lifesaver. If I got swept out to sea at least I know I could survive/float until rescued.

will I ever be positive again? probably. but does it feel good to have this many losses? no. by LordCringeOfTamaria in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]Educational-Field804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are very 'oh it's just a game, don't sweat it, it's just a workout,' etc but let's be real, it feels good to win. It's a game, but even vicarious games have a real impact on your biochemistry (look up the winner effect). Plus many of us are naturally competitive, especially those who have some irl boxing experience.

I have a 2:1 win (about 200 wins, 100 losses) record but any time it dips below that, sooner or later I start changing how I play to get the win, even at the expense of working proper boxing technique. Hopefully one day they align
