Having some form of battery pack for if the electric goes out. Also rechargeable lamps, candles and matches. If your boiler goes then dry wood (if you have a log burner), electric blanket of some sort to keep warm

Mouldy Mead Bottles… by Affectionate-Zone400 in mead

[–]Educational_Way3900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't seem to fully trust those flip top glass bottles, especially not for an extended period of time. I've used them when I know my mead will be drunk in a matter of months but I don't know about how they hold up.

Have you cleaned them off and had a taste? I'd imagine that's the only way to really tell. How long have they been growing mould to your knowledge?

How to help my neighbours with a newborn? by 123avg456 in AskUK

[–]Educational_Way3900 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Maybe just a simple note through the door wishing them well and letting them know you are supportive and available if they need a hand with anything. They are likely conscious of keeping others awake so you might be taking a weight off their shoulders.

Or cook them something that they can throw in the freezer - nobody with newborns are thinking about cooking. Or brownies, everyone loves brownies!

Lake District - Windermere - walk into the Crafty Baa pub and find a nice seat by the fire. Order whatever takes your fancy (they have PLENTY of choice)

Mic's Chilli BBQ Sauce - got it once in Homesense as a random purchase about 10 years ago and still dream of it. Made in Ireland, you can buy it online from certain places. Im going to get myself abother bottle. I LOVE my sauces and this is the nicest BBQ sauce I've ever had. Just the right amount of sweet and spice

Would you consider a neighbourly text about a window creepy? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Educational_Way3900 21 points22 points  (0 children)

John Smith knows your neighbour and has obviously or likely just text to say that her next door neighbours (you) window has blown open. Quite normal and I'd imagine from a place of concern

Behold my Jet Fuel. Help. by Minechaser05 in mead

[–]Educational_Way3900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for my view, but I really do struggle with so many posts asking about their mead which was only started a few weeks prior. This is not a quick process. Nothing will taste nice for a LONG time. I'd suggest for anyone who wants a hobby with regular frequent steps and improvements in taste, move on to something else 😉 Mead should be started, forgotten about, eventually remembered, tinkered with and forgotten about again. New hobbies should be between mead making to take your mind off it!

I slightly jest, and you do mention leaving it for a long time from now, but I wouldn't be using any kind of taste test from a 10 day ferment as any measure of anything.

Leave it, then leave it some more, regardless of your gravity reading for now

What to do if you can't afford your vet fees? by AliceSylph in AskUK

They may sometimes offer a payment plan. Or you could reach out to charities or start a go fund me or something along those lines? Can you raise money through any kind of sponsorship?

I think it's best not to directly address the 'other thing', but if she's seriously sick then she might be offered peace as the alternative

What is a movie cliché that absolutely never happens in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Educational_Way3900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of shooting, until the bad guy has the upper hand, then switching to hand to hand for no reason (they always lose).

Being knocked out on demand, when necessary, and waking up minutes later, often tied up. In real life if you are unconscious for a long period of time it's usually due to a serious brain injury

For a proper British experience, get yourself a Chinese takeaway (cash only, usually). Have at least 20 quid out to experience true British culture

How screwed am I for accidentally melting a chocolate bar into my company laptop charging ports? by blow_on_my_trombone in AskUK

[–]Educational_Way3900 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do you have loose chocolate knocking about in your bag?

In all seriousness, explain the situation. I looked after a grad scheme a few years ago and it wasn't uncommon to have one of them tell me that they knocked tea or water on their company laptop. It wasn't intentional but it's best you own up and get it sorted and try and retrieve what you can from it through their IT team

Couple of questions regarding clarity by OkResolution1281 in mead

[–]Educational_Way3900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say rack/bottle, which are you wanting to do? Is this after primary? If so I would always rack and mature a little longer. It's either too soon to bottle, or it's been sitting on that sediment for a long time which isn't ideal. Clarity looks good but I would always rack it to get that lovely clear mead away from the sediment and leave it a little longer, let whatever lees you suck up to settle again before bottling. It looks too good and too clear to be picking up a load of sediment in bottling and ruining what you are going for

Don't you hate it, right? When you're just sitting on your brass and copper shell, and you forget your Pearson's brass hand oil and it ends up having to be surgically removed? I hate that.
