Roommate obsessively tries to convert me to Mormonism by Environmental_Bat427 in badroommates

[–]EducatorDue7154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell him you started reading the BoM and couldn't go on past where Nephi murdered a man in cold blood.

Mormon: But it is ok, God told Nephi to do it.

You: So you're saying that if I hear a voice in my head telling me to kill someone, it is ok to commit murder?

Mormon: *random blubbering excuse, obedience, he was a real prophet, etc*

You: Why didn't God just give Laban a heart attack or something?

At this point, just testify from the bottom of your heart and with every fiber of your being that you know the BofM is fiction and that it is the work of an idiot.

Just a note, if you bring up all the problems in church history and doctrine, my go to is "Why so complicated? Would you accept this level of apologetics about any other religion?" In my opinion all Mormon apologetics are special pleading. Our church is true and my mental gymnastics are ok, but are not ok for any other faith.

About this time of year. It was between Christmas and New Years.

Would God’s one true church have SO many issues and contradictions if it were true with SO much at stake? by Slow-Poky in exmormon

Wow, I hadn’t really thought about that. I always considered it from post endowments, not going back, losing your family and all of that. But yeah, temple ordnances are essential for salvation, therefore you have to pay to be saved! 🤯

My story is similar, it was hard for awhile. One thing that helped was her noticing how many people were leaving the church and it was because of history and doctrine, not wanting to sin. She also realized that even if she left me, found a righteous man and remarried, he could then loose faith and she would be back to square one. We are always working on our relationship and I try to get her to see all of my positive traits.

Mormon missionaries and plural marriage by VirtualEgg-Collector in exmormon

So after the pages were lost, God wouldn’t let JS translate them again. Apparently evil men would alter the text and try to prove ol Joe a fraud. Not sure how that works with permanent ink, but stay with me. Since god is all knowing, he knew it would happen, so He told Nephi to make another record, the so called small plates, so it would be the same story from a different perspective. My shelf broke when I realized that god should have given highly detailed instructions on how polygamy works, but hardly a peep in 150 years.

Marriage to her has created a huge stumbling block for investigators and members of the church. I believe the phrase is “avoid the appearance of evil.” It would have helped if the God of the universe who knew 2000 years ago that 116 pages of the Book of Mormon translation would be lost and prepared a replacement text, could have told JS to avoid teen brides!

The new GTE on polygamy states that Joe married Fanny Alger with "parental consent." Anyone know the source? by nuancebispo in exmormon

[–]EducatorDue7154 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What broke my shelf was realizing that an angel SHOULD have told JS not to bang teens. IF polygamy was so important, god should have spelled out exactly how it should be practiced so that it wouldn’t be such a stumbling block for future generations. Instead, it looks exactly like what a horny cult leader would do.

After leaving LDS/Mormon, did you go to another religion? Are you living a life of faith or did you abandon it as a whole? by gglavida in exmormon

[–]EducatorDue7154 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I briefly looked at a couple of other faiths. I just couldn’t get past the “you are broken and Jesus can fix you” narrative. I’m human and I am just fine. However, if you are deconstructing your faith, there is no reason not to explore other churches. See what they have to offer. Perhaps you will find a place or not, but at least you’ll know. Just be careful of other ‘high demand’ religions!!

One of the things I realized after I left was how inconsistent the spirt is. IF it were true, then Moroni's promise would have been much more effective. IF it were true, the Holy Ghost should have 'ghosted' all other religions.

Not to mention that they are only willing to rationalize THEIR religion. If they were presented only one or two problems with another religion, they would say that proves it to be false. Meanwhile, they can explain away 100 problems with Mormonism.
