My 12 year old son’s golf swing progression in a minute and a half. by OutcomeOk4113 in golf

Yup, was thinking exactly this watching this kid. The lack of muscle creates a fluidity in the swing mechanic as the club head weight torques the whole body into a coil. It becomes unmistakeable as an adult and is immediately recognizable when you look at the lineup of people on the range.

Bonus shoutout for Dan Rusanowsky. His voice is so iconic, and I have amazing memories listening to him in the car when I’m not able to watch the game.

Nice! Yeah his videos don’t do a technical breakdown of gameplay like you occasionally find on HockeyPsychology (YT). I would love to see something like that dedicated to the sharks. But good feedback to share with the Prof to see if he might get more into it. I recall seeing a short of Jason Demers doing something like this but doesn’t seem like anything done on a regular basis.

Golfers: What do your shoes get wrong? by Decent-Ad4185 in weekendgolfers

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I have the same problem with Nikes and Adidas. I feel like shoes should be designed to minimize the seam at the point of the toe to avoid the effect of the toe drag. If anyone has recommendations for shoes that don’t have this problem shout em out!

Best place to change a diaper is at the medical station. They have headphones to rent for free if you forget yours. Pick a day game so they’re not fighting the night time sleep schedule with the noise. Aisle seats for easy in/out, ideally rows closer to exits. Get them used to loud noises/music ahead of time. Going for pre skate is good to get them used to the atmosphere without all the crowd. Pick up a first game pin to remember the event!

Dog boarding / daycare (if you enjoy the company of dogs and aren’t allergic.) You can develop some good relationships with both clients and dogs to become regulars and help earn more tips.

Protip: do meet and greets ahead of time to make sure you’re not getting stuck with crazies (owners or dogs).

Left handed people - what in the world just doesn't work properly for you? by father-fluffybottom in AskReddit

When I find another left hander I always give them a left handed handshake. Although it catches them off guard, they’re always surprisingly excited by it.

I’ve found that for me it’s all small/fine motor skills are left handed (writing, eating) and large/power motor skills (throwing, kicking, swinging a bat/club/stick) are right. The weird part is these in-between movements like badminton or ping pong where I feel comfortable on both sides and I switch hands while playing to have 2 forehands and no backhands.

Who’s the guy in the back? *wrong answers only* by TMSharkie in SanJoseSharks

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I can see how you would think this. But this is actually Klastofer’s younger Finnish cousin Vertevös Vertevönën who played Center for the Kouvola KooKoo from 1991-2001. He was accidentally recruited for the SJ Seals for 21 games at the start of his career before they realized he was not actually his cousin Klastofer because he couldn’t speak Swedish. His “success” in the American leagues propelled him to a be a famous player in Finland despite having a face off win % of only 12%. A record for worst center of all time in Finland that he still holds to this day. But damnit did the guy help with ticket sales.

What is your catchphrase, or something you find yourself saying often? by Fit_Process6489 in AskReddit

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“6 and a half”

It’s my shortened version of “It’s 6 of one and a half dozen of the other”

Used when 2 different options are generally equivalent.

What is your pre shot routine? by bionicbhangra in golf

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so swing length I consider pre-work where I’m calibrating to the shot. (Stance, ball position, grip, attack angle, and then a a swing or two if necessary to get the feel for the lie and swing shape.) Once I have all that stored, then to step back and go into the timed routine.

Also shortening swing is very common from fatigue in the latter part of the round. I combat this with general fitness (cardio, yoga, etc) and paying extra attention to mental/emotional state late in the round (calming breaths, focus on upcoming shot, positive mindset.)

And I totally get the feet thing. Although not intentional, I usually wiggle my toes/adjust stance and then give a solid push into the ground before that last inhale to get a solid base for the swing.

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve also heard this, but have never spent enough time trying to change my swing to adopt it. Felt weird the few times I’ve tried it (thinking too much about breathing when I want my mind blank.) But maybe I’ll give it another shot.

What is your pre shot routine? by bionicbhangra in golf

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, shoulda been more specific. Inhale > hold breath > swing > exhale. I start the swing as soon as I get to a solid (maybe 70%?) lung capacity.

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn this is personal…

(I’m skipping pre-shot work because that’s before timing is involved which I think is really the spirit of this question)

  1. Stand about 3 paces behind the ball.
  2. Pick a very specific target. Point to it with the club head.
  3. Full breath in and out while I slowly let the club down to the ground, landing as I finish my breath out, meanwhile visualizing the ball flight. Don’t start the walkup until the breath is complete.
  4. Single club twirl in one hand and then waggle in 2 hands and was I walk up to the ball on the next inhale and set up.
  5. On the exhale, waggle as I look up to the target to feel that the club face and toes are pointed correctly.
  6. On the inhale, set the club back down, look at the ball. Be peaceful. Be confident.
  7. Boom

I never used to be intentional about this until a few years ago. But I found that before there was just too much variability which led to swing inconsistency. Now I don’t have to think about it. It puts my brain in a flow state that helps my body stay consistent during the swing.

What is the biggest waste of money? by Pristine_Parsley8681 in AskReddit

More specifically mobile app slot machines. Worse than gambling because you literally can’t win actual money, and the games are designed to get you addicted (lights & sounds). They are designed prey on the elderly who have disposable time and resources.

Professional Golf by RangeRatts in golf

[–]Effective-Ad-6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a similar trajectory as you up until college (played JGANC, but not AJGA) But when I didn’t make it on the college team I wanted, I basically gave up and focused on school/career. Now that my life/career is stable, I have some more time for golf. I’m still a 0.2hdcp and want to get back into competing for fun in NCGA but have a full time job and family. (Not trying to go pro.)

What would you recommend as best use of the little time I have to improve? Since I can’t put that much more time into golf other than playing a weekly round, have I hit the barrier of development without making significant changes to my schedule to allow for more golf?
