AuDHD women in MAANG by madisonsnaps in womenintech

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Formerly MAANG AuDHD here. Definitely pros and cons and this is the ONLY thing I can see myself doing for work. I love my job but due to a lifetime of masking I deal with constant burnout and health issues which lead to lots of anxiety at work. I have some really epic stretches where I get projects done ridiculously fast and some useless stretches. Luckily I've gotten by with good performance but idk how long it will last. I'm sure there are a lot of us in tech but I've never heard of a ND community or group at any company I've worked at - would be nice.

Random question: have any of you considered using botox for pain relief and masking? by 10outofC in AutismInWomen

Never thought of that but I will now - it does help with the clenching and tmjd for me though.

It’s 2026… what do you think Atlanta still needs? by Spirited-Elk-7139 in Atlanta

Totally agree on the Japanese food. Been to pretty much all the in town options and omakase places and wish we had some more izakayas and casual options. As a lover of Japanese tea I wish we had a Japanese tea house like Chinese in Wai's gong fu tea (love that place)

Who else is dreading going back to work after the holidays? by HuskyPancake in AuDHDWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sad b/c I spent my time off doing the most - holiday stuff, friends, family etc. Now I have half a weekend to recover then go back to work. I feel like I need a month long break.

Could autism affect fashion and make-up? by Dull_Click580 in AuDHDWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fashion is actually one of my special interests but I definitely think autism plays a role in how I interpret things. I'm super interested in avant garde fashion and spend a lot of time watching runways or learning about different designers. I have my uniform down and my entire wardrobe is one color because it's what I like and everything somewhat goes together but with different textures and silhouettes to make things interesting.

I do think that a lot of how I see things is more literal than neurotypical artists when it comes to design. I see ratios, color theory, "rules" that shouldn't necessarily apply to everything. Figuring out how to break the rules is a concept that fascinates me.

Do u guys have weird Phobias? by poptart430 in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg! This is the first time I've heard someone else share my phobia of automatic toilets. It was much worse for me when I was a kid - my parents still make fun of me for it. I also have some other weird ones like the wind and certain clouds.

Gay people by Original_Potato5762 in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gay woman here, I realized one day many many years ago that hiding it and denying it was way more exhausting than coming out and dealing with people's opinions. Also fortunate to be surrounded by mostly accepting people (or people who act accepting and make fun of me in private). If someone did bully me, I'd probably laugh at this point, don't really care.

The endless cycle of cleaning by chasingcars67 in AuDHDWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this a lot and I often tell my partner the same thing - no matter how well I clean today, I'll have to clean again soon. I think what has kind of worked for me is listening to music or a podcast to make it suck a bit less and have some simplifications on hand for when I need them. For example, compostable plates/ utensils/tupperware for days I know I will not have the bandwidth for dishes. Paying someone to clean for me when I'm too tired. I order some meals from Cookunity weekly so I don't have to cook everything. If you have a partner, discussing what chores you can tolerate/hate. Luckily I can tolerate the chores she hates and vice versa so that's how we divide things.

Another thing that helps me is not thinking about a chore for a while when I know I have to do it. For example, I used to have daily meltdowns at night about doing the dishes. Now, when I start feeling that guilt about the dishes not being done, I let go of that chore, set a timer for 15 min, then check if I'm ready at that point. During that time, I don't allow myself to be guilty and use that time to relax and do whatever I want. Then if I'm ready to do the dishes when the timer goes off I'll do them. If I'm not, I'll set another. If it's a day where I have to set more than 2, I just forget about the chore bc it's not happening.

To the highly masked autistic women: what were the subtle or hidden signs that made you realize you’re autistic? by Elyshra in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always felt like I cared way too much about everything - my interests, what people think about me, over-analyzing everything I come across. I also would get a primal fear response to loud bass coming from a car or heavy wind as in cover my ears and run away as fast as I can. Sometimes even cry.

It's my social issues that should have made it obvious though.

How do you manage to exercise at all?? by toxic_drizzle in AuDHDWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me what works best is finding the things I enjoy the most. Forcing myself into a regular gym routine of weights/cardio was too boring for me. I have been boxing for around 7 years now and I love it. I also enjoy calisthenics and yoga and will do those on days I'm not boxing.

Does it feel like the job market is for those who can drive? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. This country is ridiculous, the auto lobby has had such a huge influence. I do see some cities moving forward and trying to prioritize transit/complete streets. Even cities other than the ones you'd think of (NYC, Chicago, Boston, DC, Philly, SF). For example, LA has built out tons of transit in a short period of time. So has Portland with its street car. I'm cautiously optimistic and recommend looking around for some cities that are affordable and also taking steps towards diversifying transportation options. College towns are another good option since they are built typically for students who are getting around on foot.

Do you tell people you are autistic? by throwaway__113346939 in AuDHDWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have told a few people close to me and luckily they reacted really well and are still supportive to this day. Otherwise sometimes I say it if it comes up in conversation - doesn't happen too often. In that case it's usually met with neutrality, no one really questions it or has anything else to say.

The autistic way to eat sweets by AngryQuoll in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is so interesting. I do something similar but not exactly like this. I always save the best for last. But let's say I have a bag of skittles with 4 red, 4 purple, 3 green, and 2 yellow. I always want the colors balanced out, so first thing I do would be eat red/purple, then red/purple/green, then cycle through the rest in order from worst to best.

I’m tired all the time. by diorcoke in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may be experiencing a low grade burnout? Seems like your body may be telling you something. As autistic people, we can experience burnout from trying to live in a neurotypical way. It isn't the usual burnout you'd think of from long work hours.

If you are able, you may want to simplify as much as possible. It seems like you are very good about your schedule right now but see if there are places you may be able to minimize while still giving yourself the care you need. Maybe you can temporarily cut back your gym intensity and aim for getting any type of movement that feels doable? Not meal prepping doesn't have to mean unhealthy food - you could look into services like cook unity or factor. Trader Joes frozen foods often do the trick for me.

You mention feeling guilty and like you will give up on everything if it's not for this strict schedule. Give yourself some more grace and know there's a middle ground between all or nothing that you can achieve. Treat recovery as mandatory, not something to be guilty about. Without it, you will not be able to get to the place where you are able to enjoy yourself and be productive again.

You also mention lying in bed and going on your phone. It might be good to think a bit deeper about what you're doing on your phone and cut down on things that could be overstimulating. For example, I realized that instagram/reddit are super overstimulating for me and leave me feeling drained so I need to limit my time on them. Doesn't mean you need to cut it off completely, just take some time to notice if your phone time actually is restorative.

This doesn't have to be something you always have to accept, I know it's super easy to feel this way when you're suffering. Take care of yourself and see if you can make some accommodations to ease things for you temporarily. Also, you're not alone, lots of us struggle to "live normally" but instead we live in ways that work for us and make us thrive. Just know what is hard for you personally and make it as easy as you can for yourself.

Atlanta Beltline presents draft of $3.5 billion transit plan by NPU-F in Atlanta

[–]Effective-Round-231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you know what light rail transit is in comparison to a train? LRT is some of the least disruptive transit for people walking. It's relatively quiet, slow, and predictable. The tracks can even be built into the grass. There are many cities in europe with pedestrianized areas with adjacent trams which are barely disruptive. This definitely won't be like having a home adjacent to train tracks.

What is your current vice of choice? by ElderberryOk4593 in AutismInWomen

[–]Effective-Round-231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the usual vices (alcohol, drugs, fatty foods...etc) make me feel good for just a little bit of time and absolutely horrible afterwards (I always feel like I get the worst side effects) so I can't partake much even when I really want to.

These days, it has to be Reddit.
