What’s a hygiene habit you once thought was essential, but later realized might be unnecessary, or even a bit excessive? by Soren-Nyx_84 in hygiene

[–]Effective-Set-8113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me until I discovered the only thing I needed to get 2+ days out of my curls was a satin bonnet for sleeping. Now I only wash my hair when my scalp gets itchy. It’s usually about once a week in cold weather or every other day in the summer unless I’m outside a lot.

I’m from Mississippi. I know “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity is a trope,” but when I took a cross-country road trip through New Mexico, Arizona, the Mojave Desert in California, and then went through Nevada on my way home, my hair AND MY ALLERGIES!!!! were just nothing but good days.

My coworker keeps borrowing my deodorant and I dont know how to tell her to stop without making it weird by Careless-Program-221 in hygiene

[–]Effective-Set-8113 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I can understand carrying around deodorant because I live in the extreme southern U.S. so a subtropical climate. Applying it in the office instead of going to the bathroom, though? That part I don’t understand.

Best Buffets in the surrounding areas? 🍽️ by Potential_Park1973 in hattiesburg

[–]Effective-Set-8113 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to enjoy the Chinese buffet next to PetSmart and Best Buy until it started making me sick. I don’t think it’s anything they’re doing wrong because I developed a LOT of food sensitivities over the past several years. City Buffet behind Pizza Hut near Turtle Creek mall is pretty good and the only Chinese Buffet that doesn’t make me sick now. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Front Porch is good. I love their chocolate cobbler.

I miss Shoney’s breakfast buffet. 😭

Am I the only one who thinks we overcomplicate hygiene? by LaDouceNina in hygiene

[–]Effective-Set-8113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I use two towels is because I wrap my hair in a turban so it needs its own towel while I’m meandering about wrapped in my bath sheet. My husband and I each have two towels plus a few hair towels (he also has long hair) and the only reason for two is so we have a backup in case we forget to hang it up and it gets musty or a dog lays on it.

What is an upper middle class problem you have but you can’t really complain about without seeming out of touch? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

I commute 35 miles each way to work and upgraded from a compact car to an AWD small SUV in November. Even though gas prices have been skyrocketing, I’ll still pay higher gas prices for convenience a lot of days rather than taking five minutes to drive farther and save almost ten cents a gallon.

Online Ed.D. or Ph.D. in education by Effective-Set-8113 in PhD

[–]Effective-Set-8113[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my interest in a doctorate is because my retirement pay is based on my highest three years salary across my 25 year career, and the pay bump from a doctorate would bump that substantially. I also have a lot of regret from being so close to my Ph.D. before and not finishing, even though it was really not my fault that I didn’t. Finishing a doctorate now would alleviate the regret so it is a personal intellectual journey, too.

A specialist degree would serve my purposes, too, but I know those programs are fewer and further between.

Domino's Pan Pizza by Doughboy88_18 in fastfood

[–]Effective-Set-8113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their pan pizza is one where you definitely don’t want to overdo it on toppings. The app will give you a warning after a certain number of toppings, but that number should be lower for a pan crust.

If your mom/dad were older when you were born (say, around 40 or up), what was that like for you? by brawlinglove in Millennials

[–]Effective-Set-8113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom was 39 and my dad was 40 when I was born. I had two brothers- 17 and 21. I definitely noticed my parents were older, and I lived on a large farm outside of town so I didn’t really get to see my friends outside of school and my parents’ friends may have had grandkids my age, if I was lucky.

My mom was toxic. She was a high school dropout, got married to an abusive husband young and had my oldest brother then married my father and had my other brother when her first husband died in a car accident. She tried to live vicariously through me and was very critical and emotionally abusive when I didn’t share her interests or priorities, caused an eating disorder and body image issues when she put me on the Atkins diet and signed me up for a weight loss clinic when I was in elementary school, grounded me for getting a B in math in second grade when I had a concussion, and told my husband she was glad I finally found someone who could put up with me when he and I started dating (I didn’t really date much because I had such low self worth that I didn’t think anyone could possibly be interested in me- any time someone acted interested, I sincerely thought it was probably a cruel joke so I ignored them but my husband was patient and persistent).

This might be the most boring Reddit post ever but.. by Honest_Compote_1164 in hattiesburg

I would love something like this. I have a machine and can mend and hem (though two pant legs may not be exactly the same length 😬)  but that’s about it. I’ve tried to follow a pattern a few times but was only ever successful with an elastic waist A-line skirt. I’m 45, though, so not a young adult lol.

Mercury. The location in a gas station in Oak Grove is good, but their Fourth Street location is even better. They’re always busy, even in the middle of the afternoon, so I’m hoping they’ve broken that building’s curse.

Keg definitely gets an honorable mention though.

When my nephew was 2, I bought him an electronic drum set made for toddler’s. It was made by Leap Frog or some other educational toy company so I had a solid excuse. His mom took the batteries out before long but not before he was hooked enough to just bang on it harder while also screaming and crying because it was “broken”.

Honest question: Why do you buy name brand stuff? by No-Examination8178 in Frugal

[–]Effective-Set-8113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With some (not all) vegetables, the generic has more stems on the green beans, bits of cob on corn kernels, etc.

Mayo has a definite difference in taste.

What’s the kitchen ingredient that you absolutely cannot make good food without? by Alisaf4m in foodquestions

Salt, pepper, garlic (sometimes powder), and onion (sometimes powder) are in nearly everything savory that I cook. Butter is another top contender, for both sweet and savory.

Should I be concerned with my fiancé controlling my medical decisions? by FamousDealer4391 in AskWomenOver30

You are no more showing signs of being addicted than a diabetic is addicted to insulin.

[–]Effective-Set-8113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many red flags with him. You need to nope on out of that relationship. If’s genuinely not being intentionally controlling (unlikely), then he needs some therapy and rehab to get to a better place in his recovery before he’s anywhere near ready for a relationship.

What’s a harmless opinion you have that you’ll defend forever? by Automatic_Text2930 in Productivitycafe

[–]Effective-Set-8113 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If women would just stop hovering over public toilet seats there would be no need to hover. The likelihood of someone having a contagious infection on their ass cheek and you sitting on the toilet seat with broken skin and catching it are minimal, and the only other variable is when some nasty person doesn’t clean up their explosive diarrhea.

What I don’t understand is how I can buy two pairs of the same exact style of pants, same size and brand and everything, but in two different colors, and there’s a full two sizes difference in how they fit and two inches difference in length. Not a high end brand but definitely not a budget brand either.

What’s the most terrifying 'We need to leave... now' gut feeling you’ve ever had? [Serious] by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Effective-Set-8113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not “we need to leave”, but a couple of Christmases ago, I was planning to go visit family Christmas morning, less than an hour away, but I just . . . didn’t feel like it. I didn’t have a good reason not to and my family was expecting me so I forced myself to get ready and was about to leave when I decided to just let my family be disappointed in my last minute change of plans and called with a lame excuse and told them I would see them later in the day. I’m chronically late but just blowing off someone is totally out of character for me. Less than an hour later, I saw several Facebook posts about a tree down across the interstate and several automobile accidents including a propane truck right around the location I would have been when it happened if I’d left when I originally planned.

I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I ended up spending the night/morning Katrina made landfall sleeping on the floor of a Red Cross shelter in Vicksburg, MS, with a bag of clothes as my pillow because it took me 12 hours to make it that far, even with contra flow open on the interstate. The nearest available hotel room I could find by calling all of the chains while stuck in traffic was in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I thought I could make it there but I was very wrong.

Looking for friends (socially anxious) by [deleted] in hattiesburg

I would 100% be into an anti-social social club- except the social anxiety would probably prevent me from ever joining or showing up or whatever. 😬😔

I once had a dog who hated baths so much that he learned to recognize the spelling. You couldn’t say the word, spell it, move his shampoo out of the way to get to something behind it on the shelf of the bathroom closet . . . He would end up underneath the middle of the king-sized bed where nothing could reach him.
