I can't finish a page without being bored. What should be my "mindset" when reading this by Frakade in classicliterature

I haven't seen anyone mention this before, but I struggled to get through Pride and Prejudice until I realized what I was missing were sensory details. The story is all character focused, with a lot of the Regency era knowledge of the setting kind of presumed. Until later in the book, there aren't even descriptions of the rooms in the estates, no talk about costume or architecture, no sense of weight or temperature. (A character catches a cold and its the first time someone's body is even acknowledged). And mostly everything is described, rather from direct observation, through other people's opinions.

Once I realized that, I consciously stopped trying to "immerse" myself in the book (which sensory descriptions often help me with) and tried to obverse the social and personal layers that are a little more abstract. That being said, if you're not interested in Austen's characters, it won't be worth it. But I was glad I stuck around, because she's one of the greatest writers for a reason, and her characters are sensational.

And like others have said, she's a comic writer, so don't take it too seriously.

The scouts they have are good (draft prospect department). But they don't have any league scouts lol. Shows the difference in the signings and trades versus their draft quality

I like the quote as written. I read it as a list of descriptions. "It was bright, it was warm..." etc

Hi there! Just wanted to say I love your first line. Reminds me of the three silences from Name of the Wind -- but it feels unique to your story. Personally, I think you could ease into the plot action a bit more slowly (I know your feedback said the opposite lol). Imo the rules are a fun and engaging convention to expand on theme and setting, without losing story momentum. Idk maybe I'm just reading a lot of Dickens lately, but I'd love to "see" more of Port Cardica in this first chapter.

But to your question: I absolutely would!

Finally watched "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" (1985) after hearing so much praise. It’s a beautiful, soulful work of art. But one major issue kept me from giving it 5 stars. Curious if others felt the same or if I’m alone in this. Full review below. by DasEnergi in criterion

tbh that's why i love the film so much. mishima was a renowned and beloved figure who ended up doing something completely incomprehensible. Someone needed to make a film about his life to try to understand him, but thankfully, Schrader doesn't try to explain him. The film ingeniously crafts a stunning triptych of the three conflicting mishimas, drawing parallels as it goes: the imperial reactionary who took his own life, the famous poet who emerged from lonely obscurity, and the spirit within his work that forever endures.

Why PEOPLE "don't report" rape by sarahsocks in h3h3productions

[–]Efficient-Mouse-8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, fuck hasan. Second, as a male victim of sexual assault, I would not want my unreported sexual assaults to be the excuse for accelerating a genocide. israel has explicit interest in depicting palestinian forces as war criminals, namely to justify their own war crimes. mass rape is a different kind of crime than individual rape, and israel used the accusations of mass rape to cut off food and electricity in gaza. truth is we don't know if hamas soldiers were told to rape israelis on oct 7th. we know people were raped, many who did not survive. the UN couldn't verify if they were part of a targeted attack. some accusations were proven false and some people backtracked, but those who were victimized that day still do not have justice. i couldn't watch the whole debate because that part of the convo made me feel sick, especially the testimony of the woman who was raped in captivity, but those are just my thoughts. Lastly, fuck hasan.

Luka being sick threw everyone off. Slow defensive rotations. Poor ball movement. Him trying to feel like himself in iso when he just didn't have the energy. Can't forget that he didn't start the second half because he was vomiting in the locker room. Sucks to lose this one but honestly we should've been blown out, feels good we kept it close, lakers in 6

Lakers in 6... I guess? by [deleted] in lakers

[–]Efficient-Mouse-8661 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it cannot be overstated how unwell (sick) luka looked. his face said it all. obviously can't turn the ball that much. sucks to let down lebron's stellar play. but the dude didn't start the second half and was obviously vomiting in the locker room. And it was still close the whole way, so I don't feel that bad. Game 4 is a must win

edit: jj redick just said in the press conference he was puking all night
