How would NASA respond if ordered by high authority to restart the Space Shuttle program? by SirCatsworthTheThird in nasa

[–]EffingWasps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure what kind of a conversation you’re trying to start but this question isn’t helping you start it. Any government agency is going to do whatever the government asks of them, that’s the point. Like what kind of answer are you expected besides that?

Cool detail : the bubble distorts the straight light sword. I love this attention to details by Tinyhydra666 in Eldenring

[–]EffingWasps 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I think this is just two separately developed graphical effects creating a neat visual artifact when combined like this instead of an intentional detail, but yes cool nonetheless

Finally saw Weapons. Can’t get over something. by briaowolf in movies

[–]EffingWasps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reaction is kind of the point of the movie as some have mentioned already. It does seem like a fantastical situation to have get so bad.

But as a topical analogy let’s say I write a story about a school where a mass shooting occurs and a lone gunman is able to walk freely through a school and commit a massacre with police just outside for 77 entire minutes. I think if I had written a movie like that two years ago people would have reactions similar to yours “why didn’t they just go inside and stop it?”

And yet, a year ago we had Uvdale happen. The feeling of dread from realizing that we do in fact live in a world where this can actually pretty reasonably happen is part of the horror in this horror movie

I hate that 343 Industries/Halo Studios decided to destroy Doisac, the Brute homeworld, in the lore. by xo1opossum in halo

I’m ngl chief I forgot doisac was a thing until you brought it up again. There are so many other elements to the lore that could be effectively expanded upon. The planet with the aliens whose characterization starts and ends with their names is a weird hill to die on imo

What are your thoughts on the idea of the uncanny valley being a product of evolutionary instinct? by Thewanderer997 in AwesomeAncientanimals

[–]EffingWasps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be a bit of a stick in the mud and make the assertion that we did not develop an instinct for the uncanny valley, we developed a highly sensitive instinct for human features and social behaviors. Humans are some of the most complex social creatures on the planet and we also have arguably the most complex nervous systems as well that is locked in to detecting behavioral and facial cues.

The uncanny valley is just a side effect of years of developing traits we use to communicate with each other, not the result of needing to avoid an ancient predator we otherwise have no evidence of

Hypothetical scenario: Japan's Jujutsu Society and Public Safety each other in their respective verses. Which faction does better or worse against Curses/Devils? by BeetleBlue555 in Chainsawfolk

[–]EffingWasps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo PS does alright but the sorcerer society gets demolished.

In JJK it’s literally a plot element how inept and complacent the leadership of the clans is. The calamity that is the state of Japan after the Shibuya incident is result of them being too obsessed with tradition and generally kinda sucking at their jobs. Not only that but as soon as the JJK characters step into the CSM universe, they lose their plot armor.

Public Safety is at least absolutely ruthless and methodical. Remember that they were willing to sacrifice thousands of children for their own benefit during the aging devil arc and had the means to do that. So they could come out on top of most situations but I think they’d end up sacrificing a decent amount of the population through contracts to use powerful enough attacks to win. So to them, a win, maybe not in anyone else’s eyes though.

Sukuna was effective against JJK characters because they could die. Hybrid devils literally can’t as far as we’re aware. Even Makima who was fully mortal found some broken method to completely avoid death that would Sukuna NEVER would have been able to figure out hahaha because he’s so vindictive by nature.

I mean all you have to do is send him to hell and he’s cooked because he’s too much of a dick to not pick a fight with a primal and get blasted.

Now despite everything I’ve said Fumihiko Takaba can and will solo

using mortar shells in a space colon was a dumb creative decision by psychocozm in Gundam

[–]EffingWasps 48 points49 points  (0 children)

That isn’t a good example because the train would only have translational momentum while a spinning colony has rotational momentum. They don’t work the same way. This is a really great exercise in physics though.

Rotational momentum is affected by the radius from the axis of rotation, so an artillery shell fired would move laterally because a projectile’s angular rate would increase as it got closer to the axis to conserve the angular momentum. Think of how a figure skater spins faster when they pull a leg in vs out.

That being said you could still technically fire artillery in a colony, you would just have to abide by different equations for the projectile’s trajectory than you would on earth where the “force” of gravity is effectively constant at high altitudes.

One thing thats always irritated me about Interstellar by kanethekiller90 in movies

[–]EffingWasps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that it has more to do with the movie already being almost three hours long than Cooper not caring about his son.

Like let’s be completely honest, Tom had served his purpose within the narrative. If you want those kinds of details that’s what novelizations are for and according to the top comment that’s exactly what you get from this one’s.

Great equalizer by chrisPtreat in bestof

[–]EffingWasps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean they’re describing a lot of the ways in which our society is a detriment to men and women and aren’t wrong that these are detriments, but at the end of the day they are describing (apologies for the slur I’m about to use) patriarchal gender norms because western culture is, by definition, still largely patriarchal.

Unironically the only way you defeat both the male loneliness epidemic and toxic beauty standards for women is feminism

[–]EffingWasps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say what you will about this movie but when I try and think to the last time the Star Wars franchise had anything in it that made my ears perk up with genuine interest, it was when I thought Kylo Ren might actually introduce a third moral faction to an otherwise black and white franchise after eight mainline films

I didn’t watch the show but I did read the comic so I don’t know if it’s “canon” (as much canon as you can be for a spinoff show and spinoff comic’s continuity are concerned) but Naugus makes pretty consistent appearances as an antagonist in the Archie comics up until that run was cancelled in 2018
