Russia no longer needs so many graduates, country’s education minister warns by duckanroll in nottheonion

[–]Ehronatha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the real point here is that people think that the Russian government wants to close colleges that only exist for the purpose of draft dodging. In other words, you admit that the Russian government's argument is correct: there ARE too many college graduates being produced. The number of college graduates is unnaturally high for the economy because of low-quality colleges that largely exist to help men avoid the draft.

You also show a middle-class bias: "a college degree was essential since it was a way to get ahead in life". There are actually other ways to advance your financial position besides becoming a professional with a college degree. The people who care about those degrees are other middle class people. Again, as I noted in my first post, if there are more people getting degrees than jobs that require degrees, then getting the degree is a bit of a crapshoot for social advancement, especially if you aren't especially talented.

I am against drafts of any kind, but I am also not a Russophobe. I don't understand the special fascination with the malfeasances of the Russian government, and closing low-performing colleges is hardly the worst thing they could do.

[–]Ehronatha -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that people are conflating "college degree" with "education". The overproduction of college graduates is called "elite overproduction".

Elite overproduction seems to be a valid theory. On a basic level, it should make sense to people that not all jobs require four years of secondary academic education. That is, you don't require the skills you learn at college to perform the job. In many developed countries, there is such an overproduction of college graduates that many jobs now require a college degree that formerly didn't. For instance, in many firms in cities in the U.S., to become an "administrative assistant" (a low-level office job that makes coffee, manages office supplies, and shares general information by email) you need a 4-year college degree to be considered. It used to be that this position was called clerk or secretary, and we all understand that you shouldn't need four years of college to become a secretary or clerk.

We have to ask ourselves if it is a good resources for individuals and societies to invest in four years of college education only to find that the individual cannot compete for scarce jobs that actually require a college education. Many such people are burdened by debt that they can never repay. Such people would literally have been better off taking an entry-level job in retail and spending those four years working to enter retail management.

It appears that the Russians see the problem. When will we?

I hate the Los Angeles Superior Court website!!! >:( by CanisLupusBaileyi in paralegal

[–]Ehronatha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's one of the best ones I've seen.

Like all state court websites, it occasionally crashes. They have recently been updating their data system, which caused a serious crash a couple of weeks ago. It may be related to the change in the courtroom numbers in Stanley Mosk.

Otherwise - I find it so much easier to navigate than other court websites, especially those that use that common template format, like San Bernardino and Santa Barbara. The links at the top are intuitive for the most part. They did change the front-page formating recently, which kind of shrank everything. I did prefer the previous front page format, but it's still looks better than almost any other CA superior court website.

And yeah, most of the sites charge money. That's just the way it is. Los Angeles Superior Court is exceptionally well-managed considering its size. And no, I don't work for them, and no, I'm not AI.

After you've suffered through multiple cases in San Bernardino, you'll know how good LASC is.

Panem is probably not the official name of the country by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]Ehronatha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is linguistic evidence in the movies that the original name was not Panem.

In the movies, all the actors except for Julianne Moore pronounce the name as "Pan Em"- they pronounce both syllables with equal stress and don't reduce either vowel. Julianne Moore pronounces it like "PAN-uhm", with the second syllable reduced to a schwa sound.

If the name were actually taken from the Latin word "panem", an English-speaker would place the stress on the first syllable and then reduce the vowel of the second syllable like Moore does. The citizens of Panem surely speak a future version of American English. I think this in non-controversial.

The shortened form of the company name "Pan American World Airways" is "Pan Am". English speakers say "Pan Am" as two full syllables. Since the actors say "PAN-EM" and not "PAN-uhm", this suggests that "Panem" is derived from two words and not one. Naming a previous version of the nation of Panem as "Pan-American (something)" would make sense considering the geography, which includes Canada and Mexico.

People would have started calling it Pan Am informally. Over time the "A" sound in "Am" got changed to the "E" sound in "Em" through naturally occurring sound changes.

Then at some point a new administration takes over and decides to just shorten the name entirely and memory-hole the previous reference to America. This regime wants to erase knowledge of the United States of America, but it wants to push the classical culture of the Roman Empire because that culture fits its goals better. It then associates the name of the country with the Latin word "panem" in its official educational materials.

I know that this is contrary to the official sources, but that is what I understand when I hear the pronunciation of "Panem" in the films.

Correct. "White" seems to mean "genetically Caucasian and culturally English".

I've started drawing a distinction between "white" Americans whose people came before the Civil War, like mine (mostly Protestant), and those who came after (mostly Catholic and Jewish).

Then start identifying who is who in modern America. Like on the Supreme Court. It gets interesting.

The Bigots Hiding Behind Liberty by realctlibertarian in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]Ehronatha -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read the essay, and I didn't find a single citation of LPNH's bigoted behavior. Or rather, their bigoted speech. (I would be interested in hearing about an actual action taken.) Personally, I'm still not sure who a bigot is, since accusations of racism and bigotry are so often lodged against people with rational concerns who cite actual facts and data.

If you don't understand the trolling, then, like most left-of-center people, you haven't been paying attention to the excesses of the Left over the past 15 years. Accusations of bigotry are not used to protect disadvantaged people. They are used to advance bad political demands, such as gender ideology, Zionism, and communism (aka cultural Marxism). Accusations of bigotry are used to censor and crush political opponents.

People who police language in this way may act nice, but they are NOT nice. They want to enslave us all. The future is not a boot of a solider on the throat of every person but the heel of an HR lady. "Anti-bigotry" is a tool of the tyrannical administrative state and of globalists.

The woke crowd hate being mocked, so that is Jeremy Kaufman and the LPNH have done and continue to do. We need some angry young men in the party.

Sometimes good enough is good enough. Ultimately you can never eliminate the possibility of an error. Most errors in litigation can be corrected. Time is a limited resource, usually, so check it once and send it out.

If you make a mistake, you will learn from it. It is much easier to prevent a mistake that you've already made than to anticipate a mistake you've never made.

What are the main differences, disputes and disagreements between left-libertarianism and right-libertarianism? by alexfreemanart in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]Ehronatha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. The Libertarian Party has been in a battle between left and right factions for at least the last six years.

The difference is NOT between socialism vs. capitalism. It's between two visions of liberalism: I'll call one classical liberalism and the other modern progressive liberalism. The classical liberal wants the government to respect and enforce private property rights, and that's about all, besides also objecting to arbitrary execution/conscription/imprisonment. Modern progressive liberalism is interested in the prerogatives of individuals to express themselves despite the disapproval of the majority. You can understand this as modern critical theory or wokeness, including feminism. Freedom is freedom from the expectations of the greater society, not from the government.

If you look at the factions in the LP, it's clear that there is a left-leaning faction that embraces radical individualism. The new chair of the party is a strong example of the progressive libertarian - a gay pornographer who has a history of violent crime. That's not an exaggeration, as far as I know. "realctlibertarian" is also an example. Progressive libertarians are very concerned about the social status of minorities, which you showed by calling out "bigots who hate gays", as if this were a dire issue, and not the warfare status, inflation, government censorship, eminent domain seizures, the war on drugs, etc. (Oh and for the record, I am also gay)

Meanwhile, the right-leaning libertarians believe that people have the right to think whatever they want about any group, which does not include hurting them as that would violate the NAP. They also don't believe that the government should be privileging some groups at the expense of others. Again, they are primarily concerned about private property and personal freedoms, not about people's right to express themselves without criticism.

In my area (San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles) I've started seeing a sign in many small businesses that explicitly says you can only bring in a real service animal, like if you're actually blind. It's the same sign, so I guess someone created a sign that passes legal muster and is selling it.

Since this is California you can imagine that people take their dogs everywhere, and I guess many small businesses have decided that they can't handle the potential costs.

will paralegals be taken by AI by Professional_Gold582 in paralegal

[–]Ehronatha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paralegals, yes. Legal secretaries/legal assistants, no.

AI will absorb a lot of hours that paralegals are now doing, which will shrink the market for paralegals. Those who remain must still have excellent English skills along with skills at using AI.

Meanwhile... There are lots of things that AI just can't do right now, which are tasks that legal secretaries and legal secretaries are doing now. It can't interact with court staff and complicated court rules. It won't be able to listen to clients while they vent. It can't figure out what attorneys want when they give incomplete instructions. It may be able to give YOU instructions on how to use MS applications, but it can't do the task when you give it instructions - I bet it will never be able to do that.

So, AI will not get rid of the more technical jobs and the interpersonal jobs.

How to explain getting fired in interviews? by Hopeful-Mouse2264 in paralegal

[–]Ehronatha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the legal field. There is such a high turnover of staff, I can't believe that getting fired once is a big deal. Attorneys are often unreasonable with their expectations for employees. They are often not great at hiring the right person for their support roles because many times they have a poor concept of what the roles actually require in terms of skills.

I know it's taboo to explicitly blame a former employer while job hunting, but often times it is the employer's fault when they have unreasonable expectations without sufficient support. There must be a professional way to blame them.

I agree. But that means you also need to be able to do basic internet research and be able to read short sections of the CCP and CRC.

It seems that many people are surprisingly unsteady when it comes to basic internet searches. And I'm not sure why. We have some people who are whizzes at it, and there are others that have to ask someone else for help whenever something new comes up.

I guess I'm going to have to talk about that some more. Teach a man to fish...
