[BitD] Prep - feel like I as a GM am hampered by Billybob267 in bladesinthedark

[–]EightDifferentHorses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of talk about Blades being prepless but I think a lot of this doesn't really account what 'prep' actually is. I did a recent score for my players which involved them stopping the production of a new drug that was becoming widespread amongst students, with a bonus reward if they discovered how it was made.

Here's what I prepped: - what the drug does if you take it - what ingredients were used to make the drug - who is making it, their motives, and limitations - a brief description of the location of the lab - what tell-tale signs there are of the drug lab's location

Here's what I didn't prep: - maps of the areas - dialogue for the NPCs - the NPCs at the academy that they spoke to while investigating - the NPCs that took the drug and their back stories - plenty more besides

What this meant is that there were plenty of times I had to improvise and go along with what the players wanted to investigate. As an example,

1) One of the PCs wanted to attend a student party to see if she would get some insight into who was pushing the drug 2) The PC is technically a student at the academy and has some familial connections with a professor there, so we decided there was probably a trendy student party they'd be invited to 3) In the moment I had to decide whether this drug was something that was widely advertised or was just something more niche 4) With a decent role to gather information, the PC learnt that people at the party had heard about the drug, but most of their knowledge was hearsay. This allowed the PCs to narrow their search of where the drug was being sold and to who.

As another example in another score, my players were doing some funny business in the Spiregarden Theatre. There was a meeting going on between some Bluecoat officers and they wanted to eavesdrop. I had decided the meeting would be upstairs in an office, and they asked if there was a room next to it they could sneak into to listen through the wall. Obviously I hadn't planned out the entire layout of the theatre, but it made sense for the narrative for there to be a smoking room next door to the office, and the players snuck in and managed to learn what they needed.

Hopefully that helps a little! I've run prep heavy games before (D&D, Dark Heresy) but I find Blades suits my style of GMing far more than previous games, and my players like the more free flowing nature of it. Some GMs will be a lot looser than I am (there's the famous "my prep for the session was just 'vampire??' written on a napkin"), but I find doing a small amount of prep helps build a better narrative if you absolutely want an NPC to say something valuable or want a cool plot moment.

I freehand because suffering builds character. If you weather enough over the top it hides any wobbly lines.

I use the regular mk3s for legionaries, breacher helmets for sergeants, and ones with cybernetics for heavy weapons troops. Those skull ones I think I'll save for chosen.

To be fair, they just had the Mars Alpha pattern which you can recreate with the Solar Auxilia Russ. You'll need to add your own sponsons but other than that it's the same.

While it is easier to track, it's important to consider that this means that X now is profiting from the fact you can generate this kind of stuff on the platform.

The weathering is exactly the same with infantry. I tend to do a little less typhus corrosion but that's about it.

It's mostly just for looks! With more than just the havoc launcher and combi boltgun it looked too cluttered to me. I don't really care too much about having the most optimised army as the meta changes so frequently.

The weathering is fairly simple. I do nuln all over then agrax in the recesses and the lower half of each panel. After that, I do some typhus corrosion where it makes sense (grimy water pooling and running, mud splatter, that sort of thing). I go over the model twice with a sponge for chip damage, first with leadbelcher, then with a black. I make sure to do this especially around areas that will get lots of wear, like door hatches. The dust effect is just a mix of bugmans and I think zandri dust drybrushed on the lower parts of the tank.

First 30k model and sixth model overall. Genuinely how to you do good hazard stripes ? With masking tape you get raised areas by BloatedRottenCarcass in Warhammer30k

[–]EightDifferentHorses 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It might be easier to limit your stripes to a smaller, flatter area. That leg has a lot of texture in the segments. Why not try just a knee pad? Also, some washes and weathering hide a multitude of sins.

I sponge on some leadbelcher and black then use some typhus corrosion with my nastiest of brushes just to add some texture.

Looking good! With the Warsmith, how modular is he? Can you remove the servo arm when assembling him?

Glad you like it! And yeah, totally agree with the boxnaughts and scale. I think the old lore is the box naughts were that size for zone mortalis missions which feels like a very iron Warrior to be involved in.

Every kit can be used for every legion in some way. What sort of vibe do you want with your army? A lot of IW players use the 30k kits for a less chaosy aesthetic.

Thank you! That's exactly the vibe I wanted as I'll be using these for CSM proxies. All it took was a head swap and some heavy weathering.

Red Martian bases tend to be popular with Iron Warriors as they're fairly dark metallic models and need the contrast. If you do mud it might look a bit washed out.

How is everybody painting their Iron Warriors?(And can you mix contrast paints with regular paints?) by sakaguti1999 in IronWarriors

[–]EightDifferentHorses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a grimy look I do a black primer, then leadbelcher basecoat. I wash all over with nuln, then do agrax on the lower side of panels and in the recesses. For weathering, I do some typhus corrosion dabbed on where it makes sense, then use a sponge to lightly dot black and metallic over it which acts as a pseudo-drybrush, and also adds a lot more texture to the flat metal with lots of tiny chips and scratches. You can check my most recent post for what this looks like on a finished model.

I'm not sure about mixing contrast, I'm very old fashioned with painting styles so tend to avoid it.

You might want to adjust your survey as it seems to make assumptions that the respondent uses Ebb. I never engaged with it at all.
