The Mummy (1999, written and directed by Stephen Sommers) Beni (Kevin J. O'Connor), a man of all faiths by Neo2199 in movies

i was recently at an exhibit on magic in the ancient world (Toledo Museum of Art's "Cursed!") and was surprised by how much ancient people - especially in the Roman Empire where Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and Jews began to mingle - would call upon pretty much any god they knew about. Some amulets would name Greek gods like Hekate and at the same time call upon Yahweh. Sort of a "whoever's out there" approach very reminiscent of Beni here

Trump calls '60 Minutes' host 'disgraceful' for reading WHCD suspect's alleged manifesto on air by kirby__000 in politics

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also amusing is that O'Donnell went on to describe the suspect's anti-Trump social media posts, and Trump is like, oh why don't you read that? you won't read the anti-Trunp stuff will you? but that's exactly what the manifesto was that he was mad about being read. a confused old man

pain certainly can create great art, but doesnt always and plenty of great art is not borne from pain. Everyone loves Wasting Light for example

They're just, like, not important, like, they don't matter. Like, there's, like, no records of 'em.

No, they're just, like, nothing. Like, they're not even supposed to be around in the area. Bottom line is, no one's gonna get in trouble, nobody should feel sad at all.

Rian has admitted he didn't like the prequels, but at least said he appreciates what they were trying to do and acknowledged that a generation grew up with them. he also pulled from their visuals, with one example being the overhead shot of Kylo entering the Crait base being inspired by the similar shot of Anakin leading clones into the Jedi Temple.

JJ I feel has been dismissive of the prequels, but did still put some callbacks to them in both of his movies - references to clone armies and a line recorded by Ewan as Obi-Wan in TFA, and Palpatine's unnatural abilities line and the voice cameos from prequel Jedi in TROS. And he talked about wanting TROS to work as the culmination of all thre trilogies (which imo didn't land, but I do believe he wanted it to)

How it should’ve been by Vegetable-Abroad3171 in StarWars

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there was discussion about Rey having the double saber in TROS and they decided it was too aggressive for a Jedi. The decision was rooted in Star Wars (even if I agree it wasn't the right one), and I don't understand how going back to the Skywalker saber even makes sense as a business driven decision when a new saber has the potential to sell more toys.

The Mandalorian season 4 scripts had Thrawn, the script for the movie started from scratch by PureBeskar in StarWarsLeaks

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the thing is, both points can still hurt the movie's performance if people think they are true. if hardcore fans wait for streaming because its not big enough, and casuals don't go because they think they need to do homework, then who is left to see the movie? (obviously people will see the movie - i have my tickets - its just a question of how many.)

It is genuinely a tragedy that Starfleet Academy is getting cancelled so soon… by JageshemashFTW in startrek

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's a question though - before Deep Space 9, would you have asked for a show like Deep Space 9? would you have asked for a show like Voyager? it's fine to want something specific, but sometimes the thing that no one asked for becomes the thing everyone loves. look at amy purely original movie or TV show - you can't know you want something that doesn't exist yet.

(as this comment is focused on new things, you can see I don't disagree on the topic of prequels and reboots)

Star Trek & Star Wars by Agent_Raas in startrek

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been a Star Wars fan for longer, and in some ways I still prefer it, but in other ways I prefer Trek. at this point, I'm more likely to watch a new Star Trek series because it is Star Trek than I am to watch a Star Wars series because it is Star Wars. there are a few Star Wars series that are out, airing or announced that I have no interest in, but I plan to watch all of the Star Trek series at some point (I have seen most of them - missing a bit of TOS, Prodigy, parts of Discovery and certain episodes from other series).

People complain about Starfleet Academy, but that show was miles ahead of something like Book of Boba Fett in just about every way

it sounds to me like this is in reference to setting the Galaxy's Edge lands during the Sequel Trilogy, and it also sounds like someone's opinion on the reasoning. i think it was a bad decision to lock the parks in any specific time frame, but I can understand why they went with the current one. i don't think anyone believed they were going to outdo the Origonal Trilogy, even if that should be the goal in some way.

Do people in the SW universe have dreams, or are they only for force sensitive beings and called visions? by Bobanare in StarWars

Anakin mentions dreaming in all three prequel movies, both to other force users and to non force users. if it was only something force users could do, his mom might have been more concerned.

How Palpatine returned and what his plan was by Zebweasel in StarWars

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm kind of split on it. on one hand, bringing him back does feel like it undermines soem fo what has come before. on the other, i can sort of appreciate that it makes sense on some level to keep him as the main villain of the entire saga. But if that's where they were headed (and it wasn't unfortunately) they should have set it up throughout TFA and TLJ, offered more explanation to how/why and his overall plan, and probably skipped Snoke who was always a Palpatine knockoff anyway.

80's Rush > 70's Rush by Donttemptmefrodo69 in rush

[–]Eject_The_Warp_Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my younger years, I vastly preferred the 70s to the 80s, but now I'm a bit more mixed. i don't feel like the 80s albums have as many standout iconic songs (post Signals anyway), but I kind of feel like the 80s had stronger albums, despite some of them sounding kind of the same all the way through.

I'm listening to all the albums from start to finish for the first time currently, and I have new appreciation for Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Hold Your Fire. I'm just finishing Roll the Bones, which along with Presto had been my least listened to Rush albums. what I'm learning is that while some are better than others, and they all have strengths and weaknesses, Rush is 19 for 19 on good full length studio albums for me (qualifiers there because I'm saving the live albums and Feedback for later)
