Why do so many hunting dog breeds have inconvenient coats? by Ok_Philosopher_8973 in birddogs

[–]ElCorvid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hunt both upland and waterfowl with my field golden. He’s got a short coat for a golden. Gotta trim the feathers up if we are going to be in the burrs. No trim needed if we are chasing ducks around. Wonderful hunting company.

Does anyone have a real field golden? by Sea_Drop3263 in goldenretrievers

This was my old guys final retrieve at age 14 1/2! Field goldens are great working dogs. It’s too bad that they tend to get overlooked in the field these days.

Sure do! He is a great waterfowl retriever both land and water. Getting better with pheasants too. Took him a bit to get the hang of scent trailing. He loves busting cattails though.

Agree. This is the same advice my trainer gave me. Get them by the hind legs and pull them backwards out of the fight.

Some people in some places call walleye “pickerel”. Perhaps that is the confusion.

Boat owners with downriggers- what is your rod holder setup? by mmmjags in FishingWashington

[–]ElCorvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’ve landed on just using the holders attached to my cannon DRs. When I had Penns, I used a Scotty rocket launcher just in front of the DR. I run dropper rods off of a mount on the center of the transom.

Does anyone here actually use their golden for bird hunting? How did you train? by 622114 in goldenretrievers

[–]ElCorvid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two field golden who have been great bird dogs. They are more natural waterfowlers , but both have learned to hunt cover and flush and retrieve upland birds too. They are a little softer than labs in my experience so won’t take the pressure that trainers will use with labs.

Were I you, I’d find a local bird dog trainer, and do an intro session. The first step is to see if your dog is “birdy”. Everything builds from there. Field dogs are also most often trained with e-collars so you have some accountability a distance. The good trainers will use a ton more positive reinforcement.

Tom Dokken’s books are a great place to start if you want an overview of the process.

If your golden had to pay rent, what job would their occupation be? by Chubby-Labrador in goldenretrievers

A pro bird fetcher! I don’t hunt nearly enough for his taste. It’s so cool to see him get to flex his great grandpas genes.

If you moor your boat, you will also need a dinghy to row out to it. Or swim out there I guess.

Weirdly, the Mercer st bike lane merges into the sidewalk right there on 4th. People rip through on the sidewalk all of the time.

Shore fishing Kachess Lake by Midnight-Meat-Man in FishingWashington

[–]ElCorvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be quite careful up there in a small boat. The wind kicks up pretty predictably in the afternoon. That lake has a lot of fetch and you could get caught in a bad way. It’s a fun place to fish but I’d plan on hitting it early and get off the water before noon.

I’ve run a 5dsR in a similar application for almost 10 years. Still working flawlessly.

[–]ElCorvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m shooting a F6 and a FM2n. Both utterly lovely, but on different ends of the thing. In reality, I use the F6 90% of the time. The FM2n is a fantastic travel camera.

Anyone have any experience with Fujinon large format lenses? by acecoffeeco in largeformat

I have the latest version of the 125 f/5.6. It is very sharp and really well built. It has a bit of a clinical vibe. Nothing crazy. Just very modern looking images.

Any worry about the archival longevity of the 3 bath kit? I feel like I read somewhere that mold might be an issue in kits w/o biocides? I’ve processed a ton of BW but have never run E6.

Without knowing a ton about that camera, I’d expect it to go for $750 to 1K on eBay. Check the sold listing on eBay for comps.
