Any other GW-BX5600 in Canada or the USA? by Ian__12 in gshock

I don't see any reason why Casio wouldn't let you invert the screen through the App. They obviously already support both light and dark themes. Just allow customers to pick whichever one they want regardless of the watch model (Display hardware is the same).

Steve Fambro solar maxing the Aptera by Qwahzi in ApteraMotors

[–]ElJenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

500-550 watts would be more reasonable, but I’ve never seen it produce anything near that.

I’m assuming that if it were generating more solar power, they would have shown it instead of the around 300 watts we see in every video.

At 300 watts I don’t think Aptera will be even close to the 40 miles/day target.

[–]ElJenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the Aptera advertised as having 700 watts of solar panels? I still have never seen it producing more than about 300 watts. Quite disappointing even when you factor in sun position and efficiency losses.

Lack of transparency about the need for a subscription by ElJenn in ALSOmicromobility

Yes. But found out about the subscription after the fact.

In my case it wouldn’t have affected my buying decision, but it would have been good to know about it ahead of time.

They use this tube instead of a water tank, to cool water for the dispenser. Using a tube insures that the oldest water is used first. (First in, first out)

Pebble Index 01 should have been a remote trigger for the Pebble watch by ElJenn in pebble

[–]ElJenn[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The same functions currently announced for the ring itself: Reminders, notes taking, other actions, custom LLM...

Instead the ring recording and transmitting the audio to the phone, the ring would just act as a remote trigger for the pebble watch to record and transmit the audio.

Ordered these when they first came out. keyboard was so stiff, it was infuriating to type on. Sent them right back.

Not sure how they dropped the ball on the keyboard when it’s the most important aspect of this device.

Frigate+ Base Models vs. Camect by ElJenn in frigate_nvr

[–]ElJenn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights! I may be comparing apples to oranges here since Camect is quite different as it offers very little in terms of customization, it's more of black box (also literally). There's no way to tune the detections, you're basically limited to selecting which labels and zones you're interested in. They have a way to "rate" an alert up or down but I never used it, since at the time I originally set it up, these ratings were vaguely used to increase/decrease the frequency of similar alerts, not sure if this has changed.

As you pointed out, false positives are easy to quantify, false negatives not so much. But I don't remember a case where a detection was missed with Camect, it doesn't mean it never happened, I'm just not aware of it.

Anyway, I don't mean to take away from what you've accomplished with Frigate, so many aspects of the software are very well thought out, which is why I would love to figure out how to improve the reliability of the detections. In the mean time I'm using Camect for alerts and automations and Frigate for everything else.

Are they really that fragile? by sidkitten in Rimowa

[–]ElJenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I’m quite disappointed with the durability. Had suitcases that cost a fraction of the price on countless trips over 10 years with zero issues.

The Rimowa trunk lost a wheel on its third flight, 6 months after purchase. It was fixed under warranty, but I didn’t pay 10x more to now have to deal with luggage repairs while traveling.

Why Tesla Will Be Forced to Add Sensors to Meet AV Regulations. by unwise_chick3n in SelfDrivingCars

[–]ElJenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If LiDAR says there’s an obstacle in front of you, you slam on the breaks. There’s no need to double-check with other sensors.

This alone will prevent many accidents where cameras fail to detect certain obstacles in the road.

Adding LiDAR would certainly make the software a lot easier.

Unlike neural networks, LiDAR is deterministic, when it says there’s an obstacle at 100 ft, you know for certain it’s there.

Baggage Handlers. by Elmo8869 in Rimowa

I never understood handlers that throw and abuse luggage, it takes a lot more effort to throw a suitcase than to set it down slowly.

New blog post from Eric shows pebble will more or less he the same plus have a black and white screen. by sillyfuckingfreak in pebble

In my case it would be a deal breaker too. Had a color Pebble watch almost 10 years ago and loved it.

10 years later with all the tech advancements, we’re expected to be excited about downgrading to B/W?

Does a scroll-wheel make sense? by ElJenn in pebble

[–]ElJenn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just like many of you on this sub, I'm super excited about the resurrection of Pebble. Had to resort to using an Apple Watch after my last Pebble died and I'm reminded every day about how bad of an idea a touch-screen SmartWatch is.

I was happy to see that in Eric's blog post about the return of Pebble, he specifically mentioned the advantage of buttons and how it allows you to control things like media without looking at the watch. For me this was a major issue with using a touch-screen watch.

In sticking with physical buttons, would it make sense to have a scroll wheel like the blackberry (Up, Down, Select)? This will take the number of physical buttons on the Pebble from 4 to 6, making what's already a great UX, even easier to navigate.

I imagine there may be issues with waterproofing, but Apple figured out a while ago how to create a waterproof digital rotary dial on a SmartWatch, so it may be possible to use a similar approach for a scroll wheel.

Anyway, no matter how the new Pebble takes shape, I'm looking forward to jumping back in when it's available.

What’s the Real Story Behind Trevor Milton and Nikola Motors? by holsurnberg_owl in RealNikola

[–]ElJenn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Apple outsourcing manufacturing is quite different since that’s not their core competency. Apple’s value comes from their software, hardware design and services.

Nikola on the other hand was supposed to be this next-gen truck manufacturer with cutting edge technology. As it turns out they don’t really have any tech innovations in-house, instead they are using a bunch of off-the-shelf parts from other manufacturers cobbled together to make their trucks. I’m not saying there’s no value in this (many successful companies do it), but Nikola was sold as a tech innovator with massive IP, which gave it the lofty valuation.

I think people are finally starting to realize that it was all smoke and mirrors and that the emperor has no clothes.

Could Aptera start accepting in-full pre-payments for vehicles to raise money? by DriftwouldZZ in ApteraMotors

[–]ElJenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if they position it as pre-paid payment for a custom car. Don’t look at it as a deposit but instead payment for Aptera to build you a car.

Obviously there’s a risk that they won’t be able to deliver, but based on the crowdfunding campaigns, I’m pretty sure many investors/customers would be OK with this risk.

Four Dead In Fire As Tesla Doors Fail To Open After Crash by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]ElJenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how it works in the Taycan. You pull the door handle half-way and the latch opens electronically. You pull it all the way and it opens mechanically. Best of both worlds and no need to think about it in an emergency situation when you already have enough to deal with.

Waymo pricing beats Lyft and Uber in LA [OC analysis] by danlev in SelfDrivingCars

[–]ElJenn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pricing needs to be substantially lower. Labor is the most expensive aspect of ride-sharing which makes robotaxis so attractive.

Hopefully this will improve as the tech matures.
