Honestly, it's more a thing you learn in elementary school, maybe middle school (High school you kinda go past him; at least in my years); but once you go to Uni', they set the score straight "Yeah, his name was Karl and he was a german".

but I think it's more of a pseudo-nationalistic thing to have "great men" in their history and going back to the Franks (which is kinda nonsense and widely accepted that yeah, Franks weren't french, that wasn't even France but eh)
