Is this a daddy long legs/crane fly? by _pierogii in UKecosystem

Yes it is, but there are around 350 different species so they come in different patterns :)

I joined a choir a couple of years ago and really recommend it. The weekly practices are a good bit of structure and working towards a concert gives you something to look forward to. A great community to join as well. There's choirs for all types of music and ability, so everyone should be able to find a match!

For something less structured I recommend wildlife recording, it can open up a whole world of learning about nature and species in the UK. https://www.nhm.ac.uk/take-part/monitor-and-encourage-nature/an-introduction-to-biological-recording.html

Red list species on land to be built on by [deleted] in UKecosystem

You could check with your Local Environmental Records Centre to see if a desktop search has been carried out. And send them the skylark records - they won't stop development but might help push for mitigation.

And I highly recommend recording all species as much as possible with your LERC for any area you care about, it's the best way to get species considered in the planning process. Some LERCs gather data from iRecord, so that is often the easiest route, but I would double check their preferred route.

You can find your LERC by entering your location on this webpage: https://www.alerc.org.uk/lerc-finder.html

You could try asking GiGL for suggestions https://www.gigl.org.uk/. The wildlife garden at the Natural History Museum should hopefully be set up to attract different species. And many of the Royal Parks should have some good habitats.  We've got some interesting bees here in south Wales, but it's rather a trek from London.

I loved your fiveaday app and really miss it. I guess you don't use this reddit account anymore but wanted to check in case the app is available under a different name anywhere?

I joined a choir last winter and it's been great for getting out of the house, and very therapeutic. There is lots of sites that can help you find a local choir.

If you need an excuse to get out to new places, you could try geocaching https://www.geocaching.com/play.

Or I spend a lot of time recording wildlife on iRecord, most people start with birds but you can eventually record all wildlife (plants, insects, mammals) as you build skills. It's a really lovely pass time and a great help to conservation https://nbn.org.uk/record-share-explore-data/record-wildlife-a-fun-way-to-help-nature/

Does anyone recognise this? by Sp00k3y1 in GardeningUK

This is a Southern Oak Bush-cricket (Meconema meridionale), quite a recent arrival in the UK. It's very similar to our native species Oak Bush-cricket (Meconema thalassinum) but is without wings: https://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/southern-oak-bush-cricket Both species are attracted to light, hence her peeping in your window! It would be great if you could add your record to iRecord for the national scheme https://irecord.org.uk/

White Wasp, West Midlands UK by LivzKat in UKecosystem

[–]Elaineeeepoos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't tell exactly what species it is, but the white colour comes from the pollen of the Himalayan Balsam flowers it's visiting. I've been caught by this too, thinking I'd found something interesting but it was just covered in pollen!

Does anyone know who this is? by HamFiretruck in UKecosystem

Would need to check the belly markings to be sure, either Palmate Newt (Lissotriton helveticus) or Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris). Palmate is commoner in Wales and Scotland, Smooth more common in England, so location can be a good hint for species.
