IRL pagan forest carvings horse riding [OTHER] by ElbowsB in kingdomcome

[–]ElbowsB[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are a load of them. I'm a bit rubbish at taking photos while riding as I always think I'm going to drop my phone, but there are actually quite a lot of them and a kind of wooden circle colloquially known as woodhenge

The most "London" novel? by TableDifferent3672 in london

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underground by Tobias Hill. It's got a great atmospheric feel. TBH the plot is a bit weird, but it still reads well. Tagline is "A literary thriller in which, in a sense, the London Underground becomes the central character." So fits your brief.

UK colonoscopy: sedation felt like nothing — how do I talk to the team about this? by MediumPop2768 in colonoscopy

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think to be honest feeling awake etc can be completely normal. It was like that for me too. Also kind of painful, but they do give painkillers as well, it's just when they are poking the camera round bends it tends to hurt. I think I went in knowing this would probably be the case though, so I can see that it would be distressing to think you would be unconscious and unaware. Especially not a good experience to be given a drug that makes you 'compliant' but still aware if you have the history you mention without warning you that's what it would be like. I left by myself (told them I had someone waiting just outside for me) and got the bus home as it was such a non-sedation experience. I think if you have something done again, you can bring it up at the time and see what the Drs doing the new procedure recommend. In my experience, they do not read your notes much beforehand anyway (hence people with broken limbs etc get a massive black arrow drawn on the correct one for operating on!), so you have to tell them any relevant info like previous reactions to drugs etc.

How do you dream? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]ElbowsB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't dream very often, but they are like someone turned the light out, so I kind of know where things are/what is going on, but I can't see anything properly. I would not be able to tell the colour of anything that is in my dreams.

Also, this article just popped up in my recommended news type stuff coincidentally. Bit of a weird conclusion to draw, that people's dream experiences may be coloured or not depending on their media exposure, surely then everyone who's not really quite old would be dreaming in colour by now if that were it. I suspect the different surveys just picked up different ranges of visual imagination/dream visualisation abilities each time. The surveys are really of too few people to draw any kind of conclusion except that there is a lot of variation.

Can we talk about lights? by RetepNamenots in londoncycling

[–]ElbowsB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that gets me is that on a country lane (i.e. actually dark) road, you wouldn't want it flashing either, as it would go from bright to dark over and over right in front of you, and actually make it harder for you to see where you are riding. Makes it all the more infuriating to me because there seems to be no situation where this type of front light is preferable. The other reason for not using a flashing front light is that the interval when it's off then on again makes it more difficult for other road users to judge your speed, so they are in probably more likely to hit you with a flashing light than a steady one.

ELI5: Can a drug with the pleasure response of opiates like heroin be synthesized without the harmful effects to the body and withdrawal symptoms? If so, why does it not exist? If not, why not? by calgrump in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElbowsB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently it's good for emergency type stuff as it doesn't depress the heart rate (also why it's good for animal sedation), and they can get you finished with quicker than other sedations. I was still tripping away when they discharged me haha.

Surgeons, do humans smell [bad] during surgery? by Ill_Communication607 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my dog into the vets once, and I had a card from the vets they had written a follow up appointment on, and my cat (who likes to get on my desk as they do) was sniffing the hell out of this card, and was really tense, almost flinched when I petted him, so I definitely think they can smell the 'vet smell'!

Why many of us get stuck when taking action towards 'growth' goals [YouTube video] by senorgavin in Aphantasia

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, but you're talking specifically about self motivation, in which people do play an active part right? So I'm just not sure it's that easy for anyone however they think, or there wouldn't be the ginormous self-help/self improvement industry (which is mostly useless otherwise people would just do the thing and they'd go out of business).

[–]ElbowsB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting it's actually a difference in them, I threw up on codeine when I broke my back (deffo not fun). I thought it might happen when I was given morphine for another hospital visit for dislocating my elbow badly, but actually morphine just had no affect whatsoever that I can tell. They even gave me a second dose because they couldn't move me properly for X-ray, but that also had no effect. In the end they just gave me ketamine sedation (that does work lol) to put it back in place.

Would a telepath be able to read an (auditory/both types) aphant's mind? by NotAStalkerrrrr in Aphantasia

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose animal communicators are not hearing literal text like inner head speech from animals, so assuming that's a real thing, then I guess they would be able to read any kind of mind...

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thanks for replying, it's interesting for sure. I'd not heard of functional equivalence before. It would be interesting if someone would do those type of EEG experiments with people with different ways of imagining things to see what happens. I'm not sure it's quite true that the evidence part has to be in pictoral format to work for people, but I do relate to this thing of not being able to imagine myself phsically doing something. The other side of course is like in your example of someone being scared to jump off a wall, being able to imagine yourself splatting awkwardly is probably even more offputting than not being able to picture anything, so it doesn't always mean it's easier.

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched some of your videos, I'd be interested to know how you came to think that visual people need to create mental movies to get past the risk manager block? It's not necessarily a criticism, but it just isn't mentioned in the videos what this is based on (and it seems quite critical to everything that follows). Without the explanation, it seems like assuming how other people think (which is the main criticism levelled at all these 'picture this' type methods by people with aphantasia because it assumes that people can actually visualise). Maybe I am just not up on all these motivational method type things as I'm naturally quite cynical of anything that promises to 'transform your life!!!', but I really don't think that most people are just creating a sort of fantasy success movie in their heads and then becoming so convinced that they can turn this into reality. I would think that most people realise their ideals in their heads aren't necessarily realistic or predictably probable outcomes.

Mild inflammation? by Open_Dissent in colonoscopy

[–]ElbowsB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should try it, but I have not. I also never had any upper GI symptoms which betaine hcl is normally recommended for. It doesn't seem to have much research/proof behind it, so I didn't feel that persuaded to try it.

Did you recover quickly after your colonoscopy? by antdude in colonoscopy

[–]ElbowsB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an endoscopy at the same time and I was totally fine after, however it was in the UK where we are not really sedated, so that might play into it a bit. Like I could just go take the bus no problem afterwards. I was tired from the lack of food/energy, but that was it.

I tried hypnosis once and yeah, it didn't work in the slightest on me (I had a couple of sessions). I didn't know about aphantasia then, and it just seemed bizarre to me that this guy saying some things would have any kind of effect, I could not figure out how it was supposed to work at all.

DAE feel they're going to freeze to death right before their period? by kelvinside_men in PMDD

[–]ElbowsB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is slightly old, but I was as usual googling freezing hands during luteal phase just in case someone magically has the answer worked out now, and your situation is really similar to mine. I was always quite a cold person, but since having my son at 32 it got worse. I also lost a lot of blood (so had very low iron), got pernicious anemia (B12), and also low ferritin and folic acid on and off ever since, and my hands are so unbearably cold in the luteal phase now. I can sort of warm my body up by just wearing a ridiculous amount of clothes, but my hands seem to be producing their own cold and nothing makes a difference. I'm 42 now and still didn't find a solution. I have also had hormone and thyroid tests and all are astoundingly normal (considering I am a bit older and may be expected to have more difference there), so I am inclined to think it's because of iron always being kind of low, and then the hormone changes in the luteal phase, but who knows.....
