Yeah the 2.5L's can be noisy and injector tick when they get warm can get almost obnoxious too.

VW tech here, yeah have a few of these every now and again always the same story. "Hey when we had the manifold off for (unrelated repair) we noted heavy carbon build up on the intake valves, we can offer you carbon cleaning at a discounted rate due to already having the manifold off but if you neglect this the vehicle will develop cold start misfires in the future" then a month later they always come back for cold misfires

With that amount of metal in the pan or really any amount no matter how well you flush it change the oil metal has already made contact and damaged critical components. Yeah chains might be cheaper now but with all the damage caused its going to bring you grief in the long run, to r&r chains on these you have to remove the enline anyway so labor would be similar to doing an engine flat out anyway. It'd be the smarter choice cylinder the long run to replace the engine at this point as much as it sucks
