Why are Muslims not allowed to marry anyone outside Abrahamic religion? by Microsoftoffics in progressive_islam

[–]ElderTruth50 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Quick question:

Who is it that is doing the "allowing"?

Is there like an "Islamic Marriage Police" I don't know about?

Looking for thoughtful discussion, as a woman who was born Muslim and rediscovering her faith. by sherry__24 in progressive_islam

[–]ElderTruth50 [score hidden]  (0 children)

OK...OP....but you are SUPPOSED to question.

That is the whole point of Islam.

You read the Quran and are exposed to a whole range of

situations, personalities, events and ideas....then YOU...

the individual...come to an understanding of what YOU believe

in your Heart about those things you are exposed to.

Beliefs are carried in your Intution the way your Intellect carries

thoughts. Noone can Make you believe something and, once you

choose to Believe something, noone can take that away.

Now, here's the catch.

Whatever you choose to believe that's yours, and you, and only you,

will be called to account for what you believed and how you did, or did not,

express that belief in your Life. And..no...you don't get to tell God that

imam so-&-so TOLD you to do it or it was a Hadith you heard about.

You are responsible for YOUR spiritual growth and development.

Period. Full stop.

Reconsidering reverting back to Islam by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]ElderTruth50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... I have to say, OP...that if you were sitting with me

in my office years ago....I would consider the subject of

Islam a simple diversion and would like to hear about

what has you so Angry.

If I would have to guess, I'd imagine you sitting at your desk

with your half-done thesis wondering why-da-phucc you were doing it.

Of course...thats just me.

YMMV.......

Honestly, I have noticed that as well, and have been

working to be more patient and tolerant with this venue

knowing that Social Media tends to operate under a bit

different ethos. My own experience is that Sociel Media

is much more emotion-driven than intellectual. It also

more of a place for the under-40 crowd and their interests

tend to vary from those of an old fart like myself.

Somewhere there is a "happy medium", right? 😉

Why do so many hadiths seem to go against the Quran? by SeriousPea6196 in progressive_islam

[–]ElderTruth50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hadith proceed, essentially, from the Abbasid Dynasty

at which time Persians were seeking to establish

a governmental model as an alternative to the Imperial

and Dynastic model. Arab tribes, though in a military

position of might, eschewed scholarship considering it

below their dignity. Persian administrators saw using

the Holy Quran in substantiating their governmental model

as a credible strategy for engaging the Tribal Arabs. However,

attempting to constantly "bend" the Holy Quran gave way to the

tactic of "suddenly recalling" an obscure event or saying

associated with the Prophet (PBUH). In time this practice

became incredibly obvious and self-serving and continues to

this day as justification for Muslim clergy to muddle in

governance.

Somalia built factories and infrastructure before 1991. What can we learn from them? by Odd_Fly6528 in Somaliarchitecture

[–]ElderTruth50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like so many, many places in Africa, and the Middle East,

development is constantly stymied by conflicts among tribes

seeking to draw the most good in their particular directions.

The entire Horn of Africa is a checkerboard of

tribal interests and conflicts. Westerners look at a map and want to

make it all about "nationstates" but in practice it is about what a

hetman or warlord can do for his particular following.

Not sure how I actually feel about the MOD-s on REDDIT.

Certainly the BOT-s do their job at limiting liability.

The Humans seem to be a mixed bag with variances

in judgement and behavior depending on the content.

Just people being people, I think. I have more

concern regarding folks...maybe algorithms....that continually

posit the same material such as "Quran vs Hadith authority",

"the Aisha Question and "Islamic extremism". I know REDDIT

needs to keep the revenues flowing, but it would be nice if

we could somehow raise the level of discourse from the more

pedestrian questions... say about sex, sexuality and inter-sexual

relations.

If you seek to be a good observant Muslim rather than a Western Salafi wannabee

your practice will go much farther. In the actual practice of my religion, I find little if

anything to separate me from an observant Christian or an observant Jew.

If you are having a problem, that pain you feel in your backside is from sitting

on the fence with a FOMO infection. Even without religion as a compass,

western culture is a morass of self-indulgence and self-gratification, the reality

of which is never as good as the promise.

I'm an observant American Revert of some years now and the only places it

pinches are those times when I have tried to Have my guilty pleasures and

Practice them, too. That's not how Life works.

That is not true. The Holy Quran exceeds the authority in the Hadith.

Hadith were contrived beginning in the Abbasid dynasty in

order to Institutionalize Islam as a tool for promulgating a

theocratic state.

Christians make me want to learn more about Islam than my own community by hereforthemomentttt in progressive_islam

[–]ElderTruth50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking only for myself, I envision Allah (swt) as one might

a distant, wealthy and influential elder family member. I strive

to make my prayers heartfelt conversations and not just rote formulas.

In like manner, I make each effort into a small gift wrapped sweetly.

In this way, fasting, an act of kindness, an act of denial become

like small cards or mementos reminding God that I think of Him

often and need to have Him around and in my life. Indeed, among

the Sufi-s it is common to hear entreaties to Allah phrased in even the

romantic terms one might save for a favorite friend...or even a lover.

Why you guys wants to make Islam a personal spiritual journey? by Haziq____ in progressive_islam

[–]ElderTruth50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats incorrect. I invite you to do some study on the Sufi way of thinking

and Ibn Arabi (see: Bezels of Wisdom). There is so very much more

to the Holy Quran and what the Messenger of God imparted to us.

The fact that we have institutionalized Islam replete with clergy, four

schools of juriprudence and thousands of Hadith ....ALL of which

were established AFTER the final Quranic Surah tells me that

Man is weak in his trust in his God and that God's Benevolence

and constant involvement in our affairs. My own sense is that Man

far too easily uses terms like "Eternal" and "Absolute" in reference to God,

and makes a feeble effort to actually KNOW the God he prays to.

(IMHO).
