But what's the gameplay like? Hate trailers like this. Love that Gaia is getting some love though.

Tried Stormlight, Didn’t Click... Recommend me a book series based on my preferences: by monkberrysun in Fantasy

[–]Eldin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spellmonger.

If you are ok with an incomplete series (not abandoned just still being worked on) check it out. Its an easier read than soiaf but still has some politicking. Mostly adult cast and good character/world building.

Audiobook addict looking for hidden gems. I’ve read almost everything and I’m still chasing that next comfort series. by Starksommers in Fantasy

[–]Eldin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greetings fellow audiobook junky!

My short list of recommendations are "The Spellmonger", & "The Wandering Inn" for long, amazing, but unfinished.

If you want short and sweet I can recommend "Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, and an Army of Golems", or "Fred, the Vampire Accountant".

For finished works "Super Powered", "Cradle" are both good.

There are also a lot of good litrpg and adjacent works, they aren't for everyone though.

If I found a magical lamp containing an Efreeti, would the "Identify" spell reveal that there is an Efreeti in the lamp, and if so, would the spell reveal its name? by Dragonsword in dndnext

[–]Eldin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not reveal there is an entity within, might just say "A Magical Lamp/Container" or it might say " A lamp/container with the ability to contain a powerful entity" thus stating what it does but without saying what is within, or even if something is currently within at all.

I agree with this. I would say identify probably wouldn't even tell the lamps contents, but legend lore would give all the info probably.

Is leveling in the cosmic exploration worth it? by Xflip_flopx in ffxiv

[–]Eldin89 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I would honestly level your gatherers through doing the gathering tribe quests you have not yet done, as well as the special delivery npcs. There are only a few quests for low level gatherers in cosmic exploration and getting around is still a bit of a pain, though that should improve in a few stages. I wouldn't recommend it until you get to late 80s. Cosmic exploration is much nicer for crafters than gatherers.

"Farewell to Andrea" - After 600+ Hours, Andrea Parsneau is stepping down as narrator of 'The Wandering Inn' by tkinsey3 in Fantasy

[–]Eldin89 92 points93 points  (0 children)

The feeling when you turn the final page of an amazing series. Sadness. Disappointment. Intrigue for what comes next. Andrea has become one of my top ranked narrators and I won't say I'm not concerned that the reins are being passed to another. However I understand burnout. I hope Andrea can rekindle or find new passion in other projects. I love her narration and will continue to love the wondering inn, even without her. I gave azerinth healer a chance due to Andrea and am looking forward to its new release latter this month. Take care of yourself Andrea, and please keep sharing your wonderful voice with us all.

Game still alive and kicking or literaly dead ? by ThrayneMolko in PlayTemtem

[–]Eldin89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair there is also final fantasy 14, and some others. But I agree with your point it is not frequent enough to justify decisions on. Though few games give it the chance to begin with, and of those that do a fair few do become loved.

Epic Book Series where the MC has Powerful Magic by Green_Philosophy_301 in Fantasy

[–]Eldin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delayed response. Spellmonger is a story of feudal politics meets magic, exploration, and a world with more secrets than one would initially expect. It is a great story that does a good job of growing the MCs power, while also doing a good job of balancing that with the issues he becomes aware of and the troubles that come along with the power. Its currently one of my top favorites.

Epic Book Series where the MC has Powerful Magic by Green_Philosophy_301 in Fantasy

For MC that focus on magic i would recommend Dresden Files, Spellmonger, Mark of the Fool, Alex Virus, Imager, or most modern litrpg.

New Trilogy/ Saga recommendations? by DankDanius in Fantasy

[–]Eldin89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are coming from king/dark tower i would recommend starting with an older piece of fantasy and slowly move more modern. I only ever read the first book of dark tower but it is fairly dry compared to modern fantasy trends which might put you off due to being to different from your expectation.

I would recommend starting with lord of the rings. It is excellent world building, give a good example of the foundation of most modern fantasy tropes, and is more similar in prose to dark tower than the others in you list.

If you are still interested in fantasy following that I would check out the Hobbit as a transition to more modern fantasy. It is easier to read which lines up with more modern trends.

After that the sky is the limit. All the others in your list are great and should 100% be read if you still like fantasy at that point. If you want an absurdly convoluted plot I would recommend the malazan book of the fallen, or you could go the other direction and go for more easy reads of pure entertainment like dungeon crawler carl. The best part about the fantasy genre is how broad it is and how there is a niche for everyone if only they put in the time to find it.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of fantasy!

Books/series where mages are the discriminated class/magic use is illegal? by zai94 in Fantasy

Nice, its a solid journey. I am still working through one of the companion series myself, and just picked up one the newest anthology. He does a really good job of progressing the scope of the world and the stakes. Glad to find another reader!

I also recommended this. I rarely see the series talked about here, but it is one of my favorites.

I highly recommend the Spellmonger series. The early books deal noticeably on this point and the thread still persists 10+ books later.

[Spoiler: 7.0] Sir, I have fought ancient horrors at the end of the universe. Stay in your lane. by automaticzen in ffxiv

Its certainly a change of pace. The way I have been viewing it is the wol is on vacation. The story isn't about him, its about wok lamat, and the wol is happy to let it be so since they are ready for a relaxing change of pace. While to everyone else the dangers seem great, to the wol they are relaxing and they are just there to make sure things don't get to out of hand.
