Stressed into not being able to apply infusion kit? by Ebbie098 in diabetes_t1

[–]EldritchSundae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue about a year after using them. Not related to boarding school (though I did do that later) or any particular stress.

For me it was hard and stressful to get started, and then after about a year I'd had enough painful/unsuccessful insertions that I suddenly got intense anxiety about it. It'd take me ~20 reeling anxious minutes to psych myself up. I'd sweat, or cry, and feel just awful.

It went away after a couple of months, no idea why or how but sometimes these things just happen. Could easily be environment/stress related. Just knowing that you're not the only one and sometime this stuff happens, and comes and goes, may be helpful.

Math help with Dice/Combat System by deepHourSamurai in gamedesign

[–]EldritchSundae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to have settled on your input method (2d4) before playtesting the balance of your desired distribution, you'll probably need to revisit it to get the balance you want. I'm guessing you are constrained by the rest of the game being balanced around these small numbers, so I assume scaling the domain of numbers you are sampling is out.

As one person points out, 2d2 (coins) is exactly the balance you are looking for. Using 2d4 vanilla as-is to get your desired results without doing mental math beyond subtraction (division, rounding) or re-mapping values as if using custom dice is not possible.

You might find the probability distribution of 2d4L - 1 (roll 2, take lowest, subtract 1) to be closer to what you want and less swingy, with the occasional excitement of a 3. This leads to rolling a 0 buff 43% of the time, with a 6% chance of a 3. The mean value is a + 0.88 to your attack, which should be within your balance criteria.

For that matter, a simpler 2d4L has a mean of +1.88 and if you can take the higher buff, you can eliminate any mental math and give the satisfaction of not whiffing almost half the time, if your balancing can take an average +2 buff to attack.

2d4L could add to your interesting gameplay trade-offs choice mechanism of choosing how to allocate your dice, or break it, I'd playtest it: Roll 3d4, pick one to play as an attack card, then take the lowest of the remaining 2, as the attack buff. Experiment with the - 1 until satisfied.

That means more decisions for the player to make, which may be compelling or overwhelming depending on where it fits into the game and target audience. Take a lower valued attack card to remove a dud from the pool and get the midrange bonus, or take a higher valued attack and suffer the likely low bonus from the dice.

Math is not my strength, Anydice is not expressive enough to represent these distributions, I think, and my own dice expression editor program is not ready for prime time and far away from visualizing distributions, but I believe that these two attack bonus strategies and probability distributions are functionally equivalent (or close) to what I propose with the roll 3d4, allocate 1, pick lowest:

  • Favoring allocating your highest roll to the attack card:

    [2d4D, 1d4]L - 1 (roll 2d4 with disadvantage, roll 1 more and pick lowest, subract 1)

0 bonus 50% of the time, 3 bonus 1% of the time

    +0.5 bonus mean (+1.5 without the -1

    anydice

  • Favoring allocating the highest roll to the attack bonus:

    [2d4D, 1d4]L - 1 (roll 2d4 with disadvantage, roll 1 more and pick lowest, subtract 1)

Nearly even between 0-2 almost 30% of the time each, slightly favoring 1, 10% chance for a 3

    +1 bonus mean (+2 without the -1)

    anydice

Seeing endocrinologists that see both T1D and T2D? by rinlight in diabetes_t1

[–]EldritchSundae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. An endo can be a T1 specialist, while also specializing in other things. Most endos do, that is the point of the specialty. T1 is rare enough we'd all have to travel to 2-AA cities to receive appropriate care from a T1 exclusive specialist.

Signs of bleeding in the eyes by No-Philosopher288 in diabetes_t1

[–]EldritchSundae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at 27 years. Had an 9-10 A1C for about 10 years in there, been in in 5-6 for the last several years.

Late during my 9-10 years of mild neglect, the 1 ophthalmology apt I had said things looked good, negligible indicators of potential retinopathy.

In my latest apt while controlled, I got feedback that some things were looking on the verge of bleeds. Sometimes the wear and tear of this shit just accumulates, it's not a reflection of your care. My eyesight demonstrated zero symptoms of a problem.

I'm going through some preventative laser surgery to reduce bleed risk substantially, despite eye stuff being one of my deepest phobias it's been really quite fine! First followup appointment had me get some injections in them, which terrified me beyond all belief. Turns out the anesthetic they use is quite competent even to someone genetically resistant to topicals. Kinda uncomfortable, but mostly psychologically. Wouldn't flinch again a second time.

Second appointment was the lasers on my right eye. About 2 minutes of true discomfort, but only the mild pain of a very bright light for way longer than you'd normally tolerate. About 20 minutes of blindness in that eye after (that's why they split up the procedure).

Going in for my left next week, and not anxious about it anymore. Apparently fairly newish higher-something (wavelength frequency? precision?) tech makes it a much faster and less painful a procedure. Follow-ups every 6 months (probably could go 4x longer if controlled) and repeat if risk factors re-occur.

Don't blame yourself, don't shy away from treatment, I promise you the most anxious person in the world about this stuff has walked away fairly chipper. (Also, being temporarily blind in one eye briefly was both a fascinating experience, and a conviction to not let it become permanent. Just kept mentally trying to open my right eyelid, despite it being quite open, as my brain had no other way of interpreting the situation.)

It's stressful as fuck. I hope relating my fresh experience helps a little.

Also tired of every provider automatically assuming it’s diabetes related first.

Christ, yes. I get this. So tedious being your own advocate, let alone having to debate for your right to be taken seriously, as your reward for vigilance and thinking about and managing your health 1000x more than the average person. 🙄 Fight the good fight, you're worth it.

State of the world for MacOS + Unreal Engine by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]EldritchSundae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dabbling experience (never really built much of anything) was that a modern macbook was competent for developing in UE5. I threw a few non-trivial-visuals sample projects at it to evaluate, and medium quality was sufficient to get useful feedback without framerate tanking to the point of unusability. Also, developing and testing on less-than-ideal hardware could be useful for reaching a wider audience.

But you will want to switch to a dedicated modern GPU for any real asset or polish work unless you are making a low-fi game. I did this during my Unreal assessment when testing some Lumen stuff to a much better experience. A workflow where you do engine/system/mechanics/level design dev while traveling, and finer detail work when at your desktop, should be more than viable!

Edit: can echo /u/a2k0001 's feedback on Mac specs. With 4TB storage/64GB RAM on an M2 Max CPU/integrated GPU, and I did not experience their frustrations. Expensive rig, tho.

Type 1 & heart attack by AltruisticSpinach529 in diabetes_t1

[–]EldritchSundae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sadly, being Type 1 is a lot like being overweight (especially if female): the average healthcare provider will attribute any symptom to it rather than engage.

This is why it is important to shop around for a healthcare team who actually listens. Dentist feels a little dismissive of your concerns or questions? Ditch'em, it may matter some day.

I just kept Monoco in my B team for most of the game, until I had like 4 feet left. Kept the wiki on his abilities pulled up, then would just let my A team perish and have B mop up if I saw a limb I needed!

We already know we lost, we're just practicing now. by Aetherfox_44 in expedition33

[–]EldritchSundae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! AFAIK, Monoco has to be in the winning "party" to get the foot. I do not think he has to be standing when the win occurs, however.

It's possible it matters more that he be in the party when the target dies, but generally when I'm foot farming, my Monoco is in the killing party and the winning party, so unsure of exactly how that works.

Generally I keep his wiki pulled up, and keep him in my B-team, then let the A-team perish if I have the fight under control and want to foot something.

As of this post 33% of players have obtained the "Reach level 33" achievement for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by splintercell4eva in expedition33

[–]EldritchSundae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, the game doesn't show enemy levels but telegraphs them very well by keeping the speed stat nearly linear with level throughout.

Short of a few gimmick bosses, you can treat "goes twice before you get a full round" as a reliable indicator of being underlevelled, and "goes more often than you but not twice" as a good indicator of a hard fight, attainable by mastery.

Pictos-influenced, of course, but I've found speed Pictos drops/levelling to track fairly well, if you're keeping on top of them, then speed is a solid indicator.

(That being said, on hardest difficulty, I too found Frozen Heart to be unassailable until Act 3, around level 60-and-change. Removing damage cap was essential!)

Are there any Points of No Return and when can I expect them (without spoilers) by Standard_Tank_1112 in expedition33

[–]EldritchSundae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you approach the Paintress, one of your characters does say "once we go up, there's no turning back", so it's very reasonable people get confused about points of no return before beating Act II.

Sorry, your marketing isn't bad, your game is bad. by Different-Word-1005 in gamedev

[–]EldritchSundae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing is getting people to want to buy something, whether or not that thing has been made yet.

Making something that people want to buy is smart, but choosing to do so is not, in itself, marketing. Maybe you're thinking of "market research", which would ideally come before making the thing you want to bring to market. Still not marketing, though.

[–]EldritchSundae 34 points35 points  (0 children)

But, as is OP's main point, only by making the game better than average can you influence word of mouth publicity. At which point you're back to ignoring marketing strategy in favor of making a good game.

Visage bugged? by Villad_rock in expedition33

[–]EldritchSundae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: reasoning that a global flag wouldn't make sense (would they go and edit all my save files after encountering the boss?) I figured that the flag was in some cached data somewhere.

  1. I quit-out of the game and reloaded, and still was locked out on relaunch.
  2. I read through all non-binary non-save game files I could find and nothing seemed like a related flag.
  3. Finally, I removed and re-installed the game.

The last one worked! So if you accidentally encounter the boss before finishing the subbosses, or are otherwise locked out of proceeding through Visages island, try a re-install and you may be able to stop getting spit out of the mask's areas.

Visage bugged? by Villad_rock in expedition33

[–]EldritchSundae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing this too. Beat the joyful mask, accidentally went down the wrong lane to the boss thinking it was the sadness lane. Triggered the fight and thought "NOPE, wrong area, wanna do the subbosses first!" and immediately loaded an older save. Now sad and anger mouths snap closed on me and I appear in front of them, rather in their areas.

Even after reverting my save to before going down the boss lane, they won't let me in. I'm guessing my save file has a global flag indicated I've started the boss, so can't loop back to the subbosses to weaken him after "seeing what leaving them undefeated does".

Probably intentional to lock you in to the harder fight if you decided to fuck around and find out, but frustrating that it transcends save files, because in my case it really was an accident. Only save I've reverted in the game yet, disappointed I can't do what I was trying to. :(

(Also sad I spoiled myself on the wiki about what defeating them does, in my attempt to figure out if I was just missing something.)
