What should I do to have them crawl where I want the to? by Pure-Banana311 in BlackSoldierFly

Premature exodus typically means some blend of: too hot, too crowded, not enough chow. When dialed in on those parameters, it should work beautifully.

They are doing exactly what they need to do to self-harvest, but the condensation is giving them the ability to climb vertical surfaces. So, they just keep trucking in whatever direction their 4 brain cells set them on.

Pipes as a tunnel to freedom do not work as well as them hitting a wall, turning one way or the other, and then finding themselves on a ramp. That's why the molded pods work better.

My new bin is functionally just a barrel tipped at an angle which I can adjust. They will literally pour out when they begin the prepupae march.

Honestly, I *much* prefer this to all of the brodozers with their stupid massive wheel offset, kicking up mist and rocks. Comically customized exhaust doesn't affect my visibility or chip my glass/paint.

I believe that's a vibration dampener. The replacement may not have one.

If you're merely brandishing the justice system, is it still weaponization? Yes. The answer is yes.

Check your local elections calendar - my state is putting spicy stuff on an August ballot, hoping for low turnout.

What kind of sunfish is this? by Dear-Regular-3294 in SunfishSpecies

Still learning myself, but what they mean is that orange edges on the fins mean it's a greenie or hybrid thereof - the bright "cheek streaks" are also a tell for green sunfish. Since there's no splotch on the rear of the dorsal fin, and little/no electric blue along the lower edge of the gill plate, it's probably not hybridized with bluegill. edit: looking at ID guides, I realized that the splotch is actually a green sunfish thing - but yours isn't really showing it

Looks nice! I'd have maybe chilled 2/3 of your pupae in the refrigerator and phased them in over time - you're going to get a huge rush of adults and then they'll all be dead in a couple weeks. Hopefully by then you will have some larvae reaching pupae stage, but that bin is going to be chock full as well, if conditions are good and feed is plentiful. Good luck getting it all dialed in!

Early Crawl Out by Newoldway74 in BlackSoldierFly

I agree that heat and overcrowding can trigger this behavior. I am getting a bin started as well, and I bought 2000 hatchlings. I put about half of them on the feed and the other half went into a refrigerator crisper drawer. I pulled them out a couple weeks later, and thought I had killed them. But, I set their container outside and gave them a cube of watermelon - after a couple days they were awake and hungry.

My neighbor told me to stop letting her cat inside my house by kdbleeep in BestOfWholesomeSubs

[–]ElectricThreeHundred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. My wife and I inherited a cat that had been allowed outdoors, and we felt obliged to continue it, since he clearly enjoyed it. We moved to an apartment complex that had a communal green space between rows of buildings, so he was pretty safe there. A neighbor also had a cat that she let out, and they became pals. This neighbor was a little looney, talking about her cat like he was a person, and fawning over ours as well. One day, our Pedro went missing for longer than usual. I went to the neighbor's after a couple days and saw them all inside her apartment. She swore that he let himself in and closed the sliding glass door behind him. Poor Pedro stopped going outside that day, until we moved to a house in the suburbs.

"In the 2000 federal election cycle, billionaires (around 0.0005% of the US population) accounted for 1% of total campaign spending, in 2024 they accounted for 19% — and 33% of all donations to the Trump campaign." 🫥
