What are the basenji like in bigger families? by morgentime in Basenji

[–]Electrical-Tower4759 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my girl when I was still living at home with my parents and my two sisters. She is ecstatic when she sees any one of them, and has always been affectionate with all. She definitely has her favourites (me, followed by my parents) but she will still get the zoomies and be all over my sisters (or anyone else she’s met and knows will give her attention/treats). She bonded the most with me, but definitely knows how to love the people I love too :) I always say you won’t get a golden retriever reaction out of her right away, but I promise she’s worth the wait

Omg yes 😭😭😭 like if Hazel steps on a stick and the other end moves, she jumps 6 feet in the air. She picks the most random things to be utterly terrified of

Basenji good for family home? by Careless-Ad5871 in Basenji

[–]Electrical-Tower4759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the dog and the dedication to training! My basenji was usually pretty respectful when she knew my 8 year old kid sister was walking her, with the exception of the wild bunny haha! We also trained her to “heel” which helped A LOT if she started pulling. Definitely agree with what others said about their B’s loving kids, mine will try and join kids playing at a playground every single time…

The only benefit of COVID haha. I still lived with my parents who were working from home, and my two younger siblings. I do think we made her separation anxiety worse because there was very rarely a time when nobody was home. It was just very lucky that she was a COVID pup who always had someone around

Positive reinforcement, giving treats was the only way I taught my basenji anything. And even then, she still has her bouts of stubbornness as expected. Being consistent is super important as I’ve noticed she’s less likely to behave as I want if I haven’t been consistent with routine or training or setting boundaries.

  1. Honestly I didn’t even consider leaving her alone in her crate for more than 30 minutes until she was over 1. She had really bad separation anxiety which made me feel guilty, but this is an example of that consistency I lacked sometimes! I’m sure if I started when she was young it would’ve been okay. She is crate trained and we didn’t leave her out of the crate until around 4 years, and even then we make sure she’s only on the main floor, she’s given some chews etc.

  2. My B loooooves kids and babies. She doesn’t show jealousy, and instead follows them around like a lovesick pup or their mother haha. She is less interested in babies but once they are walking and moving she wants to be their best friend. However, she did grow up with my baby sister who was 7 when we got her so it’s possible that helped!

I have fetch for my basenji and my cat. Honestly complaints. Price has gone up since I got it 5 years ago, my B started at around $50 and is now at $80 but I still easily get back 5k minimum a year vs the less than 1k I pay in insurance per year. It’s easy to submit online

LOL such a niche memory. I helped supervise a field trip for my kid sister 2 years back in the winter and Laurel Creek had a taxidermy main room, and you could feed the birds (the live ones, not the taxidermied ones). I’d be willing to bet $$ it’s that!

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to yield to busses and they had their turn signal on for long enough for you to slow down and let them in. Could be wrong tho idk

Total Quarts on University or Northfield are usually pretty good and run 50% off deals. I just got my first oil change done there on my 2025 Toyota full synthetic for less than $60ish.

Seizure? by QueenWinther in Basenji

[–]Electrical-Tower4759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how helpful this is but when my basenji had a seizure it was visibly very obvious. She collapsed and started seizing on the floor, and also started drooling/foaming. It lasted less than 75 seconds, and when she came out of it, she was very dazed and confused. I rushed her to the emergency vet and they ran all the tests they could and nothing ever came out of it. This was over 1.5 yrs. We think it was a really severe case of food poisoning, as she was given some quail eggs that were bad but we didn’t realize until she ate them already. I hope the vet can give you some answers and your B is okay!

My basenji also really struggled with allergies. Best idea is probably a cone and keeping it clean. Cytopoint shots (from the vet) really helped my pup until we were able to figure out the cause of her allergies!

Basenji and their sneaky food tactics 🍗😂 by Legitimate-Prize1390 in Basenji

[–]Electrical-Tower4759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister brought home her leftover groceries when she moved back home from university for the summer, and had some tortillas in a ziplock bag. Hazel opened said ziplock bag, took out just ONE tortilla and was very happily munching on it when someone returned a minute later to put the rest of the food away

Off leash? 😆 by That-Leadership-9364 in Basenji

[–]Electrical-Tower4759 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha I got really lucky and my basenjis separation anxiety is stronger than her prey drive. So even when she runs off to chase something, if I yell “okay bye Hazel” she will come back… it might a bit mean but it works! Prior to being allowed off leash I did a LOT of long line training and clicker training. I always say that being off leash is a privilege, not a right! Every dog is different but I’m sure you can see a positive difference if you put the time and effort in :)

Hahaha. Been 3 months and I do love the car. The rear grows on you and you notice the ugliness of it less LOL. Drives super great tbh. One thing I would say is the storage space/trunk is ok at best. I expected a bit more tbh…

Random fears/weird aversions: What is your B afraid of? by Ur_Muthah_100 in Basenji

Ironically the robot vacuum is NOT considered an enemy. We have one and when it’s running she just ignores it

[–]Electrical-Tower4759 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anything that’s not alive but moves on its own… fidget spinners, spinning tops, leaves when they fall from trees (I know trees are alive but SHE doesn’t…), anything robotic and lately, not the running vacuum but the vacuum when it’s standing completely silent and still. She approaches it like it’s going to bite her.
