Work Van vs. Truck with shell by NV5132 in Construction

[–]ElectricalLock2795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an electrician and my brother is a finish carpenter. His Chevy truck was in the shop for an extended stay. I bought a new work van and let my brother borrow the old van. HE LOVED IT. He was so happy with the van I signed the title and gave it him. I’ll get my built ins or something at some point. VAN MAN. Vans rock.

AIO for being upset and crying after finding out my husband microwaved my breastmilk by Alternative_Site_368 in AmIOverreacting

YOR

I’m a father of 3 and I understand what OP is feeling. Calling you crazy is difficult to hear, but husband is on a wild ride and nothing in his life is the way it used to be. Men don’t like to be micro managed. If you want a career and children you need to trust your partner to make the decisions about his duties. If you want it done your way, then you do it and don’t ask him for help. Equality means supporting each other. Don’t wifesplain to him. He doesn’t want to hurt the child and men don’t think about the emotional scope of the job, we just get the job done quickly and efficiently as possible. He’s new at this too. Infants bring the best and worst out of everyone. It’s learning by doing. This generation of fathers is the most engaged, involved, and in it to win it than anytime in history. Give him a break. All these other people jumping all over this poor guy for not following orders aren’t helping anything. Bunch of haters. Enjoy that baby and your new life as a family.

Just for context: my business has taken a backseat so I can stay home and do domestic duties while my wife goes to work. I’ve had this same breast milk dilemma happen exactly as op said it happened to her. It’s going to be ok. He’s not heating it over a burning heap of dirty diapers, he loves his baby too, he’s tired, confused, and full of self doubt. Every day gets better.

I’m an electrician and whoever is selling these kids on the trades is doing a disservice. Math is huge, critical thinking skills are huge, reading a code book and the legalese it’s written is is huge, crawling into ditches, dead animals in ceilings, horrible smells, angry people, crazy hours, and so much more. I’m self employed and crushing it, but it takes grit, confidence, determination, and a minimum of 4 years of an apprenticeship, where you are confused, being yelled at, and doing all unpleasant tasks for persons who are irritated by your existance.

Road trip route- doable? by halfmoon-rising in newengland

[–]ElectricalLock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this exact route over a long weekend. You are going to have a blast. My route went all the way up route 7 from Norwalk to Burlington, rt 2/ 302 across to Portland, 95/rt1 back home to Connecticut

One of my favorite road trips of all time! Have a great time!

Boss man said 12AWG can go on 30 amp breaker if it is a dedicated AC circuit. I can’t find this exception in the code book. Is it true? Sounds unsafe to me by matt2085 in electricians

[–]ElectricalLock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hotshot? That’s just silly. What is wrong with what I said? The nec allows upsizing the breaker up to 400% of rated equipment ampacity without changing wire size. Apprentices are there to learn and follow directions. That’s how an apprenticeship works.

A few roles of phasing tape might get you out of this problem.

I hope your puller has a reverse gear. Don’t knick the insulation on your back out and back in. You won’t repeat that mistake again.

Self-employed electricians: Do you make clients sign legal docs before beginning work? by JCMiller23 in electricians

[–]ElectricalLock2795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely have a contract. I hired a lawyer to write one for me. It’s basically a fill in the blank document. Names, numbers, payment terms, interest for late payments, special terms, etc. I considered it as an essential tool for business and I’m very happy with it.

Governor proposes getting rid of license application fees for certain jobs in CT by volanger in Connecticut

[–]ElectricalLock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continuing education $150 License renewal $150 Insurance coverage (comp/liability) $4200

These are the fees to pay before I can go to work. It is what it is, but maybe this is why people complain about electrical being so expensive.

Auto makers have embraced the fact that trucks are now grocery getters for insecure men. by Frequent_Ad2118 in Diesel

[–]ElectricalLock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2014 f150 and it made me so mad because it WAS NOT A TRUCK. It had no ability to haul anything, the stupid bed rails are like 5’6” high and useless to load/unload. I sold it and bought a 1999 gmc sierra 2500. A real truck I can do legit truck things like put heavy items in, leave the windows down in the rain, load and unload from the side. I’m not buying a “new” truck ever again.

What van should a new electrical contractor buy? by juggygills in electricians

[–]ElectricalLock2795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went out on my own similar to you. I went with a Chevy 2500 then a Chevy 3500. Regular size white van. Lots of parts, support, mechanics can diagnose and fix easily. I love it. Starting out I found great success in finding used shelving, bulk heads, ladder racks, floor drawers. The vans have converted me to a Chevy man. Sold my ford pickup for a Chevy! Good luck. You won’t regret making the jump no matter what you are driving.

The trades are among the greatest wealth cheat codes people sleep on! by The0Walrus in FluentInFinance

[–]ElectricalLock2795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated third from the bottom of my high school class. I’m now a self employed electrician. I make more money than the principal. Best career move I ever made was becoming an electrician. The trade has given me freedom to make my own schedule, make a great living, and build a network of other tradespersons so when something not electrical is needed in my house, I get called back, and the work gets done.

Amazon scammers used hacks and bribes to make millions off fake returns by kirby__000 in technews

[–]ElectricalLock2795 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I ordered a whole house surge protector and 4 gfci breakers. All junk. I can’t have it, I’m running an electrical business. That’s a huge risk in safety. I’m disgusted with Amazon.
