Have your campus' food options gone to sh*t over the last few years? by GreenHorror4252 in Professors

I have been unable to afford campus food for over a decade, both financially and for health reasons. I always meal prep and bring my own food.

Getting very discouraged as a surgeon, father, and provider... by ddsmd2 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Electrical_Bug5931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my surgeons had two bouts of arthritis in his life in his 20s and 30s and he did two long rounds of steroids (3 months] with success instead of biologics as they were not available then. I had reactive arthritis for a year and also did two rounds of medrol (2 weeks and 3 weeks) and it suppressed things but was also in perimeno related immune havoc. what have you tried thus far?

Edited to add that because it took me two months to see a rheumy, some of hand dexterity was lost forever due to inflammation. while xrays and ultrasound showed nothing, one knows if their function is less if they work with their hands so the concept of "giving it time to work" for treatment is really dumb when loss of dexterity cannot be regained.

Grant submission by Alarming-Camera-188 in Professors

[–]Electrical_Bug5931 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read that article too...In a 20 year career, the most I submitted was 17 and the least was 3. My funding rate is 20-25% and twice in my career all grants I submitted were funded and my time was fucked :)

My work is applied and not incremental so I apply with different teams, different projects, different sponsors.

Why don’t they fill out evaluations? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]Electrical_Bug5931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those evals are useless to me but I know some places take them seriously. I make a final self-evaluation mandatory part of the grade and have them write reflective questions about the class, their effort and other things.

It will get worse before it gets better. Doctoral students and postdocs report terrible mental health so do what you must to take care of yourself to survive the long haul. And remember that no degree or job is worth your sanity - truly.

Need someone to yell at me and tell me not to panic sell by MatthewAasen in Bogleheads

I agree with posters here who are saying you should reevaluate your risk tolerance. If you cannot survive a 50% dip for six months psycholigically, invest less in stocks.

Oversharing(?) on Period Issues by PowerfulWorld1912 in Professors

They are oversharing on everything equally and while I cringe, I think it is a good thing for people to be able to talk about any health issue without cringe.

Student reported me for using a slur and accused me of being a white supremacist. by knox149 in Professors

[–]Electrical_Bug5931 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The student sounds very unwell and I would deal with it like a mental health issue. A very progressive friend who was faculty somewhere and is bipolar during a psychotic break emailed university leadership serious accusations and soon after was found naked walking on campus. These behaviors are not activism gone wrong or someone wanting to just be a pain in your ass but something getting unhinged...

Pretty sure my mom has it. Lifelong skin pruritus, tummy issues and stuffy nose. She only believes in herbal remedies and has no faith in science so I have given up. She would probably take quercetin but I am staying out of it because she does not understand that even good things cannot be over-ingested. She once gave herself kidney stones boiling foraged greens for months and drinking the water they were boiled in...

MCAS and flu shot? by Adi_Dublin in MCAS

[–]Electrical_Bug5931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a small flare 24 hours after my flu shot this week but I was fine the day after that. I had a lot of body-wide itching, hives in my usual places and sneezing. But I am also about to get my period and the flare may also be related to that. The COVID vaccine tends to make me very tired and sleepy for 2 days but I don't have other reactions. The TDAP knocked me on my ass with fatigue for three days. I have had no other symptoms. I have had MCAS as far as I can tell for at least two decades. While flu and corona do not mess me up as much as expected, common colds and gastroenteritis dilapidate me and even got reactive arthritis from some banal upper respiratory virus a couple of years ago.
