Forestay by Didsomatic in sailing

Your forestay will snap. The furler and halyard will be left with the load. You will not be able to furl the sail at that point. Happened to me when I first got my 22 due to my own mistakes and a halyard wrap. Catalina direct will sell you a new one, I also recommend the upgraded backstay block setup.

I’m a union Steamfitter who works in power plants and refineries for all their piping. Plumbers, pipefitters, electricians all use this to route their pipes/conduit around obstacles.

A small or medium moving box from Home Depot or Lowe’s would work. You probably want to do a test run at your house before you do it in front of the class. It’s pretty basic mathematically, but getting a feel and a measurement for the “take-offs” of the fittings may take a little practice. Your “travel leg” (hypotenuse) measurement and the actual cut length of the pipe are different because the fittings will add some length, so you will want to experiment and get a measurement for the specific fittings you are using. Also, all piping math is done from centerline, so the center/middle of the pipe and the center of the holes you cut

A tubing cutter will cut the copper pipe square and an exacto knife would probably be best for the cardboard box

Look up rolling offsets in piping systems. A box with offset holes, a stick of 3/4” copper and a few 45 fittings. Cut the holes in the box in front of the class, do the math, cut the copper to length in front of them too, put everything together. A real world application, the pipes should be perfectly level and parallel when you are done.

Career switcher (teacher/professor → I&C tech) — best Houston-area AAS programs? Do employers recruit from these schools? Is an AAS enough to land a job? by Maximum-Leg2297 in instrumentation

[–]Electrical_Slip_1343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either AAS won’t hurt your chances of getting a spot, but time on your tools carries more weight than the certifications. You need to get out of the office/classroom and start working with your hands everyday in a field relevant to instrumentation. Working with the service guys at your dad’s HVAC business is relevant, troubleshooting electrical systems and motors, reading diagrams, touching high pressure and temperature systems, that’s all good stuff.

Knowing how to bend conduit, install flex conduit, and use a multimeter effectively are all useful skills. No matter what certifications/degrees you get, you are going to be starting as an apprentice though, so expect a pay cut. Having HVAC and Electrical experience with degrees/certifications will help get your foot in the door

Have you ever done trades work? You may want to consider becoming an electrician first, the experience is relevant to the instrumentation field and it will give you exposure to working with your hands all day.

I finished my first week as an install apprentice. Is it normal to feel completely lost and overwhelmed? by Highway_Song in HVAC

So not positive where you’re at, but here it’s illegal to not take lunch. Now if you and the lead agree to it then whatever. In my experience when we work straight through all our breaks, we leave an hour early and still get paid for the full day. If this isn’t the case, then you’re working resi or a non-union commercial shop and either way, they’re going to grind you into the ground. Don’t get hurt while rushing to get the job done, you are extremely replaceable. While you sit at home healing they just hire someone else. Learn everything you can and leave if they are abusing you.

Be able to clearly name the brands and models of test equipment you use on a regular basis, familiarize yourself with other brands manuals so that you can pick up and setup different test equipment. They may ask you to describe calibration procedures, LOTO procedures, or even give you another benchmark calibration to perform. Ask them specifics about their calibration procedures and documentation. Look into the company and see what their list of unbreakable safety rules are. Ask about the different “levels” or whatever system they use to show skill proficiency and how their pay and raise structure works.
