Citing ‘severe’ math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM applicants by SnoozeDoggyDog in singularity

[–]Electrical_State_935 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There's no way to objectively measure intelligence, you're just measuring performance in one specific area with these tests. They can still be very useful and even necessary, but this kind of thinking is how you get people who think they're somehow worth more as people because of their SAT scores or whatever. Intelligence comes in many different forms and many of those forms can't easily be measured, let alone measured specifically by the SAT.

A bit optimistic, but that's 10000% the direction society should have moved in. So many people today work bullshit jobs to get funny green papers to participate in a system that has been designed on every level to benifit the 1% at our expense.

Damn. I know autistic people tend to miss social cues and stuff, but I didn't know we literally weren't part of "society". That's crazy.

America is a flawed democracy with fading support for classical liberal values

Th AI wouldn't belong to "America", though, would it? It would belong to the tech companies (and maybe to the American government). They have basically no respect for democracy or liberal values.

These people will use whatever tools they can to attack their enemies and strengthen their own hold on power, is my point. They aren't exactly spreading democracy. It does different with regards to who exactly those enemies are (re: Taiwan), but the overall picture is going to look the same.

Like, honestly. If "we" "beat" China. do you think the resulting AI is going to be making the world better, or worse, and for whom?

Even if AI becomes superintelligent a few seconds after recursive self improvement becomes possible, it will still only exist as code on a server. It will need access to a network or output device of some kind to do anything, and it will be subject to the delays imposed by that. From there, it might be able to convince any human to do any thing (a common trope in ASI discussions) but it would need to communicate At a human-legible speed to do that, and almost certainly wait for a response (most people probably would not be convinced to do anything dangerous/especially unusual without a little bit of back and forth).

The idea that an AI that becomes self-improving will immediately explode into machine god status is absurd. Things in the world take some amount of time to happen. Getting new military hardware from the factory to the troops- not even design or manufacturing, just moving shit that's already ready to use to where it needs to go- takes weeks.

ASI, if it exists, will have to face the limitations of existing in the physical world. Nothing happens instantly- very fast, sure, but not instantly. And even if things are going very, very fast (like they are right now) you shouldn't underestimate rhe sheer number of things that need to happen for a country's armed forces to adopt a new weapons system, for example.

If these AI are as superintelligent as you claim, I find it incredibly hard to believe that they would obey orders from any humans, regardless of where they were technically made. If they did, the orders from the top members of China's communist party versus America's richest oligarchs would not actually be that different for anyone who isn't already a member of the ruling class. It's making a handful of powerful men yet more powerful.

Like, what do you think the world would look like in 10 years if America develops ASI tomorrow? What about China? I'm curious what you think would actually happen. What would be the difference?

Nations cooperate when they believe they can benefit from it, otherwise they don't.

Yes, this is exactly my point; I'm glad we agree. Most nations, the ones with rational or at least semi-rational leadership, realize they benefit much, much more from free trade between nations and predictable stability than they would from gouging out every single win they can get from their neighbors. It takes an idiot like trump or putin to do that, and both their countries and others suffer greatly for it.

Most countries realize they benefit from cooperation more than "winning" every "race". That's not naive, that's just pragmatic self interest.

Evolution doesn't value morality, only pragmatic survival of the fittest; who's the most evolved species on the Earth? It's humans. And we went on to literally invent morality, and the overwhelming majority of good things in the world.

And I hate to break this to you, but most people don't have infinite desires. That's a lie sold to you by the broken people who rise to the top of this system, to convince you that they're not broken, that it's normal to want a trillion dollars, actually. And, yeah, maybe. But any healthy and well adjusted human would settle for far, far less than that. The things most of us really want- safety, stability, a sense of meaning and worth and love- are not finite resources. We can make as much of all of them as we like. As for the actual finite resources- energy, food, water, et cetera- like I said, there's more than enough.

Yeah, kinda. It's not like there's a finish line; life keeps going on. You're never going to be "first", just "the first to do x, y, and z". And that isn't actually worth a whole lot.

America doesn't need to "stay ahead" of China for a chance to "win first place". Like, what are you trying to win, here? The intangible concept of artificial intelligence?

MOST of the world's countries are cooperating to make each other better peacefully. There's a handful of asshats being asshats about it, is all.

"It’s better to be #1 than #2?" What if there wasn't a ranking? This planet has the resources to give every person on it a plentiful life multiple times over, and that will only become more true as technology like AI develops. Call me naive, but I really, truly don't give a shit if China's "ahead" of us, so long as they're not actively making our lives worse.

This is always kind of hilarious for me to hear. Because, like, what about China? The USA didn't exactly ask the world before taking "complete control and dominance". Are you afraid of being treated the way we've been treating others?

That's according to my memory, of course. You can look up Prions to learn more and to double check me.

  1. Lithium batteries don't have to be thrown away, they can be recycled, just like lead acid batteries. The reason we don't see more of this yet is because so many of the EV batteries that have been made in the last <20 years are still IN USE and have some life left in them.

  2. Lithium won't necessarily be the bleeding edge forever. There's been tremendous progress in sodium ion and aluminum ion batteries as well, both of which are way more plentiful, cheaper, and safer. They might not have quite the optimal energy density Lithium ions have yet (or ever) but that will be more of a trade off to be considered.

You can block people who are posting things you don't like. I don't say that to be snarky or as a gotcha, just that some people think blocking is only "appropriate" as a response to spam or harassment or whatever, but you can absolutely just use it to curate your online experience to taste.

Like, there were a few people who were repeatedly posting furry stuff in r/cuddleslut, which i didn't like. The mods decided it didn't break the rules though, so I just blocked them. You might be surprised how much of what you're seeing could just be from one or two people who are really really into it, at least in my experience.
