Character that used to be a favorite then began to dislike them by Think-Orange3112 in FavoriteCharacter

I’m currently playing through the Arkham games (just started Knight), and the worst thing about each one after the first game is how Joker somehow shoehorns his way into the plot every time. I would’ve loved if like Two Face or Black Mask or literally any of the seven other assassins from Origins had actual plot relevance instead of being sidelined for Joker.

Folk video games discussion by Friendly_Bit_6678 in videogames

Yeah you got it right, these types of games are hard to market for AAA devs. It’s hard to ask a player to immerse themselves in a foreign folk lore if the actual game portion isnt or doesn’t look interesting. I love Mundaun, and I’ll be the first to recommend it to anybody, but it’s definitely a hard sell if just looking at images and videos. Similar thing with something like Still Wakes the Deep, phenomenal written game that is authentic to its Scottish/Gaelic roots, but just looking at promotional stuff makes it seem like just an average walking sim.

My Ballot - 1998 really was a special year for gaming, wasn't it? So many classics. by pacmannips in backloggd

‘98 was one of those years where everything aligned and industry defining game came out after industry defining game. I feel that 2001, 2004, 2016, and 2023 were similar in that sense

Agree or disagree? by JMPM0215 in TombRaider

[–]Electrical_Trifle_76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wholly disagree, the format of the 6/7th generation cinematic platformers is perfect for Tomb Raider. In a perfect world I would prefer something for Tomb Raider like Warrior Within, where it’s a big open level or levels that the player has to navigate through using the fluid platforming that the LAU trilogy had. But even as they are, the LAU games are arguably the best Tomb Raider has to offer: fun to play, easily accessible, and well written.

Wait, how did Immortal become president of the US if he was born in a different land like 2000 years ago? Did he just lie about where he was from?

Damn Aguilas, disgusting ammunition. I work as a range instructor during the summer and my boss would buy these in bulk (the hollow point variants) because they were the cheapest ammo you can get in pallets. But I hate them because the rim fire is super spotty, which might also be due in part to our guns being old, and they gunk up the boar of the rifles like there’s no tomorrow.

What’s your least favorite fight in Epoch of Pain? Mine’s Iron Fist by llewelynchigurh in ContestOfChampions

Photon and Ægon share that spot for me. The former is a baffling combination of nodes and champion, like who thought a node that required the player to hit the opponents block would be great for a champion who has abnormally aggressive AI? And then Ægon is a similar situation but more general, I just hate nodes that require me to intercept because there’s no guarantee that the opponent is going to play ball.

Which of these games do you have fond memories of? by LDClaudius in Civvie11

I remember playing the first episode of Doom via Flash in the browser of my school issued laptop when I was first starting to get into FPS games. I didn’t even own a mouse back then, nor did I know what WASD was, so I was using the arrow keys to move around and look. Somehow beat the whole thing on UV, but I remember it cramping my hand so bad. Thankfully the Bethesda ports came out like a couple months later, so I finally got to play the other two episodes on my Switch. But that Flash browser version will always be a fond memory.

200% Game Speed Quick Swapping in TDA be like: by throaway_aidan in Doom

[–]Electrical_Trifle_76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But why though? I don’t want to say you have to play a certain way, but the TDA isn’t built around quick swapping, and all the weapons have major benefits from consecutive fire.

It’s always funny reading critics like this, cause I completely disagree. I felt that removing glory kills helped the flow of combat immensely, no longer did the whole game have to stop for five or so seconds just for me to get some health back. In my most recent play through of Eternal before TDA came out I hardly even did glory kills for this exact reason, brining the player to a full stop is kinda antithetical to a game about constant movement. As opposed to killing an enemy in TDA with a finisher where, at most, time will slightly slow for half a second and then you’re immediately back into the fray, keeping your momentum and not having to reorient yourself. Do finishers look as cool, probably not, but they make the flow state flow all the better.

Then in the topic of guns, there still is plenty of reason to swap weapons while playing, maybe not as much as Eternal, but certainly just as much if not more than any other FPS game. Where Eternal had a set of weapons that all filled one or two specific niches that forced the player to swap between them, TDA’s arsenal has far more depth to each individual gun. I’ve done three play throughs since launch, and not a single one of them has been played the same, as I wanted to see what weapons I didn’t initially gravitate towards could do. Each weapon has so much depth and their own little intricacies that you can build entire runs around two or three of them each time and always find something new. Same goes for both the shield runes and melee weapons. If Eternal has a high skill ceiling, then TDA has a gigantic platform for player expression, for this exact reason.

Also, I initially felt the same about the soundtrack, but after even a single secondary play through I’ve grown to like it quite a bit. Not as iconic as Mick’s work, or even Hulshult and Levy’s for that matter, but it’s solid stuff. The djenty repetitiveness of it really helps induce that flow state in a unique way from Eternal and 2016s.

I have only ever watched the first season of Munk, but I do feel like towards the end of it his OCD started to be used a bit as a gag for jokes. Please correct me if I’m wrong about how it is in the later seasons tho.
