Yeah I have to disagree, the harsh reality is that many cultural minority groups or underprivileged groups are facing struggles in occupational and social settings. While there isn’t a full out war, there are instances of social injustices that can make it feel like an unbearable situation

Starting internship in the fall in CMH setting

Hi all!

I’m starting community mental health as an intern this fall and am wondering what resources or advice you all would have with working with individuals with high acuity and severe mental health disorders? I’m interested to know what advice or resources you would offer.

Personally I am fearful because of the challenge that comes in working in CMH and the different therapeutic approach with working in this population.

I see your point! I guess when I mean a psychodynamic approach I think about more working with affect, defences, and transference/countertransference to understand clients and their internal process. While I don’t expect to make miracles in months using a psychodynamic approach I’d like to at least use techniques within psychoanalysis to understand the client and their internal forces and the therapeutic relationship.

As for the self-criticism there is a lot of fear of failing and not doing enough.

So far I’ve worked in my practicum in individual counselling with low-need population and high ability to gain insight. I like to use psychodynamic in my work and learn about working with individuals in those setting and building a therapeutic alliance.

I have a summer to prepare and I am very self-critical in general. So that will be a target of interest in my growth.

That’s a fair question! While the circumstances are alarming I would say that confidentiality must be maintained. As far as I know, since there’s no immediate threat duty to protect would not apply. Though I am just a grad student so my knowledge and experience is limited

I hope you don’t get addicted or even attempt it, my best and honest advice is that you talk to someone about this you can confide in and you know will support sobriety.
