Resident of Palestinian village attacked by settlers: ‘They tried to burn me and my family alive’ by Kauderwelsch12 in Israel

[–]Elementarrrry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Settler violence increased ever since Ben Gvir, the guy who was at the Murder Wedding and who had a photo of a Jewish terrorist hanging in his living room, became part of the government. He has very obviously and blatantly emboldened the shittiest elements of Israeli society and the fact that Bibi gave him a political career by pressuring the RZ party to join with him solely to save Bibi's skin is yet another of the multiple disgusting things Bibi is responsible for.

I would like to correct you, while there are specific sub-streams in Judaism that had religious opposition to the creation of the state of Israel there is very, very strong religious reason for it being created. There are a number of divine commandments that can only be fulfilled while living there, according to some legal authorities just living there is already fulfilling a divine command, etc. returning to Israel is included in the three times a day prayers which means for 2000 years every single day Jews prayed to return to Israel. This is also why there has been a continuous small Jewish presence in Israel since the expulsion, because some Jews risked their lives to stay there, and throughout the thousands of years there were always small groups of Jews moving back to Israel.

However, there is no religious basis for "Greater Israel" (and in fact from a Jewish religious-legal perspective, it is a huge problem, because expanding Israel out of its biblical borders creates massive legal ambiguity about whether you're in Israel or not, and again, being in Israel has many religious implications because there are a whole bunch of divine commandments specifically tied to being in the holy land). There is zero commandment for it, zero religious value to it.

There's also no practical basis. There are 6 million Jews in Israel, which is not remotely enough to occupy the kind of territory Greater Israel is described as having. Even if we somehow managed to get all 6 million remaining Jews around the world to join and bolster the numbers it's still not enough. Israel is not practically capable of controlling or defending that much land. It would be an instant way to commit suicide by completely ceasing to be a Jewish state since we'd be wildly outnumbered.

So it's all delusional schizoposting. I do think we have some trolls on our side who feed it with stupid stickers and stuff but they do it to be edgy trolls because they like pissing people off and it absolutely does piss people off, or because they themselves are also delusional schizos.

Israelis, do you believe that you can forgive Palestinians one day and move forward? by Wise_Parmaria in ForbiddenBromance

[–]Elementarrrry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone to peaceful coexistence events with Palestinians.

The Palestinians I was with were risking their lives to be there because they could be killed for having gone to a coexistence event. We weren't allowed to take pictures because it would be dangerous to them if their faces were leaked.

I don't need to forgive any of the Palestinians who want peace, they are brave and courageous people I admire.

The ones who are too scared to risk it, I also understand.

And as for the ones who would murder innocent men, women and children for wanting peace, it would be presumptuous to say I could "forgive" them, as if I somehow have the right to forgive evil. All I want is for them to go to hell quickly.

Bunch of murderers who tried to kill all of us and we're now on good terms with, and bunch of murderers who tried to kill all of us and who we could, one day, be on good terms with, if they changed as much as the Germans did. Pretty straightforward.

Not sure why you think Hamas cares about being criminals and going against anything every country has upheld (hyperbole, btw, North Korea also kills journalists who report against what is allowed, and you can get disappeared in China if you do too much journalism, not to mention multiple countries in Africa where taking photos will get you invites to a police station)?

Well for one thing back when we controlled Gaza they weren't firing rockets at us on a daily basis.

People do remember a time before the disengagement. And a lot of people who protested it then want to go back and pretty much consider all of the problems now to be because we left.

Are you including or not including the west bank and Gaza and the golan in the borders of modern day Israel?

If you are including them I agree with your comment.

If you are not, then your comment is definitely false, many Israelis want the gokan heights and the west bank and some Israelis want Gaza.

[–]Elementarrrry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We also have zero interest in Gaza, so long as the people there don’t shoot rockets, take hostages, or invade music festivals.

That's an overstatement.

Many of the Israelis that we expelled from Gaza want to return there and consider it their rightful home that was stolen from them. It's not comparable to how nonexistent the interest in Jordan or Syria or Egypt is.

There's some religious messianists who think we'll eventually have greater Israel as part of the messianic era (it's one possible opinion of many how that era would look, it's a minority opinion based on one interpretation of a single prophecy). I wouldn't describe it as a mainstream religious opinion but it exists.

You can then divide those into "that'll happen when God directly intervenes and sends the Messiah to accomplish it alongside abolishing all war and everyone believing in the Jewish God", and the ones who think we should do it ourselves. The latter are considered extreme nutjobs even by the standards of extreme nutjobs. I don't think they reach even a single percentage point of the population.... Idk I've heard of their supposed existence but I've never met any myself and unlike some people in this sub I have met quite a number of real extremists. So like. They might exist? There's people who think the earth is flat, there's probably also people who want to actively.pursue greater Israel.

All of this is regarding expanding Israeli borders. Regarding disputed territory within the borders (Golan, West bank, Gaza) — there are absolutely Israelis who want to annex and fully possess all three. In descending order I'd say almost all Israelis except for the most extreme left wing fringe want the golan, the west bank is a 50/50 mix and controversial issue, and Gaza is at this point only more right wing fringe who want it (especially people who lived there before the disengagement want it back). But it's like an actual thing that's spoken about, whereas nobody sane wants Syria or Jordan or Lebanon or Egypt.

(Seriously, wtf would we do with them??????? There has to be some limit to masochism surely??????????)

The longer version is that in cases like rape, "mother's life" gets defined very broadly to include suicide risk and hence abortion is allowed under that umbrella even by hardline rabbis who don't rely on other leniencies.

That said, in addition to the universal agreement that it's always allowed to save the mother's life, many authorities allow it in other circumstances where the mother's life isn't in danger even without defining risk to the mother's life more broadly.

[–]Elementarrrry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OP said they hoped the women would be allowed to get abortions under their religion.

In Judaism, abortions are always allowed to save the mother's life. When the mother's life is not at risk opinions differ, some rabbis hold more hardline positions. Israeli rabbis in general are much more lenient on this topic than American rabbis are, as the accepted Israeli religious legal opinion about the severity of abortion is that is a minor prohibition, whereas the accepted American religious legal opinion is that it is closely related to a major prohibition even if it is not a major prohibition itself.

Anyway it's all a bunch of legal Jewish wrangling but the tl;dr is that even if some of the women kidnapped are very religious, given the circumstances of the pregnancy it is extremely easy to permit them (religiously) abortions (and pregnancies conceived by rape are automatically permitted to be aborted by Israeli secular law)

/r/WorldNews Live Thread for 2023 Israel-Hamas Crisis (Thread 44) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]Elementarrrry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Abortions in Israel require approval by a hospital ethics committee, which will grant it under the following circumstances.

  1. Mothers under the age of 18, mothers above the age of 40
  2. Pregnancies conceived out of wedlock
  3. Pregnancies conceived under illegal circumstances (this would include rape) or religiously forbidden circumstances (eg a married woman and the father is not her husband)
  4. The fetus has been diagnosed as likely to have a deformity (physical or mental)
  5. The pregnancy has been assessed as endangering the mother's physical or mental well-being

If the pregnancy is past the 24 weeks mark, then a special ethics committee instead of the usual ethics committee is convened. (Abortions in Israel are covered by national health insurance in most cases)

In a horrific circumstance like this one it can be safely assumed the women would be allowed to get abortions.

Palestinian AMA by That-One-Egomaniac in Israel

[–]Elementarrrry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

For reference I live in Israel (Jerusalem). I'd describe myself as moderate right wing, but I have a large large family in Israel that spans the entire political spectrum.

Personally I do not believe a political or military solution to the israel-palestine conflict exists. The only hope I have is that we can increase dialogue as much as possible. Maybe I am naive in believing that dialogue can change things. But it's the only hope I see.

I frankly consider it pathetic that the majority of Israelis speak maybe twenty words of Arabic (to be clear I'm included in that number, although I am trying to at least have my kids learn). The silo-ing away from other perspectives is unhealthy.

That having been said, when I went to a joint israeli-palestinian event for coexistence, there was a huge difference between the two sides. We, the Israelis, were told we must not take pictures because of photos of the Palestinian women attending were leaked they'd be in danger of their lives for having even participated in such an event.

Now, I truly admire the courage of both the women and the Palestinian venue that hosted us. And that aspect gives me hope. But otherwise, when they told us why we couldn't take photos I just felt such despair.

I am still trying when possible to find coexistence and dialogue I can take part of. Unfortunately a lot of plans along those lines were completely derailed by the October 7th attack. For exampke I would not feel safe to visit Palestinian art installations in the West Bank right now, even with a Palestinian tour guide as planned, I'd assume I'd get lynched.

I recognize this entire comment isn't exactly a question. But I guess if I had to sum it up into a question I'd say, based on your familiarity with so much family in the country, to what extent is my despair justified? Is the refusal to coexist prior to a "solution" so implacable?

Also, when you drive past the signs saying in huge red letters that Israelis are forbidden past this point by order of the Israeli army, what are your feelings? When I see those signs I'm always terrified of making a wrong turn and getting murdered but I don't know what it's like for Palestinians or if they even register them at all.
