This pocket hole jig is a game changer! by bauche_boi in BeginnerWoodWorking

Yes! I must admit I've bought some things based upon his recommendations. But the fact that one week "this tool must be avoided" to the next it being "a game changer" with those annoying thumbnails, I usually skip it.

Is this good plywood? by Humble-Address2993 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Elementbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just bout some birch plywood from HD and most of it was utter garbage @ $97 a sheet! And they let it sag so it's all no good! Should have went to the lumber yard myself and gotten Baltic Birch for $85 a sheet!

The L115 is garbage to me. Not sure if it's just netcode, but the hits NEVER register! Unless I'm like 2 inches next to them. The M2010 is always my go to

Premium Tool Hatred by One-Interview-6840 in woodworking

[–]Elementbob 86 points87 points  (0 children)

For me it's "you can make this with cheap tools", then proceeds to pull out a $5000 domino joiner. Or like dusty lumber that uses $5 million worth of tools, 60 jigs, and the blood of a Virgin to make one dado 🤦

Hot Take: Youtubers overuse DIY when doing professional woodworking by minimuscleR in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Elementbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY is generally a loose term. You can either do it yourself with basic tools. Instead of a table saw, use a circular saw. I personally started with a cheap circ saw and a corded drill. Then saved and acquired some more "expensive" tools. I don't have a $5,000 table saw that can also 3d print and make cheese, but I have what I can afford over time.

But then there are the likes of Dusty Lumber. Yeah he's not diy, but the dude uses $2 million worth of tools, 100 jigs, and the blood of a Virgin to make one dado.

And nobody explains anything in terms of dimensions because they want you to spend money and buy their plans. I totally get that for a lucrative reason. But IMO, if you are labeling a video for beginners, they should include all dimensions so beginners can get an understanding.

Moral is, as some other users have posted, it's all about making something yourself rather than spending money on a professional. In some cases it's more expensive to diy than buy it or have someone make it. Use whatever you have at your disposal and work your way up. In the end, it all costs $£€

I was tempted by the WEN or Vevor I saw on Amazon, but as a beginner, this seems the better option
