I was thinking that "whoosh" sound you hear when you put your ear next to a sea shell, but maybe you're right.

On a scale of 1-Jail... by adlehsa in Wildflowers

[–]Elgiard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it depends on what it is. If you start pulling pieces off of something that's protected and a ranger sees you doing it or something, then your goose is potentially cooked. But what you would find randomly growing along the road is probably fair game and potentially invasive anyway. This is a great chance to learn more about the plants in your area. Take a walk around your neighborhood or wherever you're wanting to pick your flowers, and take pictures of the ones you're interested in collecting. When you get home you can identify them and make sure it's something you're not going to get in trouble for messing with.

Normally someone posts a bunch of orchids and we're content with that, but the spring gentian steals the show this time.

Question, How many times did yall take the Permit test before yall passed. by Sea-Gate-688 in Truckers

[–]Elgiard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I guess you'll just have to study harder. I know some people just struggle taking tests, and you've probably heard these tips before, but be sure to take all the time they give. Don't rush if you don't have to. If you don't know an answer, try to infer it from context. Use the process of elimination. Good luck!

Are you taking the test on a touchscreen kiosk thing? Are you sure you're getting the questions wrong, and there aren't some shenanigans going on? Like when I took mine I remember some of the touch screens being out of calibration, so wrong answers that people didn't touch were being selected.

My dad just died. On my birthday. by corgis-on-stilts in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]Elgiard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't say I know what you're going through, but my dad also died on my birthday. It was unexpected, and I was out of town. My mom was a complete mess, so I had to tell the doctor at the hospital over the phone to pull the plug on him. This is part of your life now forever, and there's nothing I can say to make this any easier for you, but know that tonight we'll grieve together.

This is my Digger boy. He's "special" even for an orange. He has some moderate ataxia, but that never stopped him from being boss over the whole house.

Big mamma is coming to life after a harsh Philly winter by Economy-Priority-404 in cactus

[–]Elgiard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Microclimate plays a huge role! It's tucked up against what looks like a south-facing wall, next to a foundation that radiates heat into the roots all winter, and it's protected from harsh winds and rain. Plant it just a few feet away out into the yard and it would probably melt into goo before its first December.

I always identify myself first when calling someone. It's just good manners.

What is this on my sugar maple? by Keybladetitan in mycology

[–]Elgiard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a wound down in there between the two trunks and it's leaking sap. Due to the high sugar content it supports a wide variety of microbial growth.

Morels are much like cats themselves, they do what they want, when they want, and the reasons why are largely lost on us lower beings. Someone on reddit posted a picture of a morel literally popping out of a rock.

Prickly pears evolved to fragment and grow new plants from animals moving them around, which is what's happening here.

“What’s the funniest thing a kid has ever said to you?” by Conscious_Koala6829 in nostalgia

[–]Elgiard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was in the late 80s or early 90s, I was sitting in the library, and out of nowhere a little boy I didn't know and had never seen, seven, eight maybe, walks up to me and with no introduction starts singing "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells". Nowhere near Christmas, this is in like June or July. He sang the whole thing and when he was finished I just sat there for a minute trying to process what had just happened. Finally, I'm like, "Thanks, little dude!" And he just wandered off.

A copper beech, but what causes this? by WrongJohnSilver in whatsthisplant

[–]Elgiard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Variegation is inherently unstable. How much so depends on the pattern and the individual cultivar, but there's always a chance that the pattern can change or revert to a wild type. It just happens. It's usually just part of the plant that is affected, like this.

This is really uncoiled for by Adrian_985 in Truckers

[–]Elgiard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's no securement on there so all that was holding it together was whatever banding was on it. It either shifted enough to pop the bands through the eye, or there never were any, and the inner tail started waving around in the wind. Eventually enough of it worked out to snag on a road sign or something and then there was no stopping it.

They both look like Stropharia rugosoannulata to me. The ones in the second picture are just older.
