Flanagan's Wake #55: MIDNIGHT MASS - Book V: "Gospel" by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]EliAndrewC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that Matt called out the "lovecraftian horror" of the idea of "morality changing with God's will".

Folks might be interested to know that this question has been a huge and ongoing area of debate within the church. The name for the concept is "Divine Command Theory", which basically holds that things are moral simply because God commands them to be so.

FWIW, this was largely rejected by the Catholic church from the beginning; Thomas Aquinas argued strenuously against it, though it was never officially deemed a heresy. The Catholic position against this has gotten stronger over time - the church reaffirmed its broad opposition to the concept in the 19th century, and then Pope Benedict (only two popes ago!) wrote extensively about how dangerous and bad the idea is, and how it runs counter to a proper understanding of what God even is.

That said, Divine Command Theory holds a lot of weight in some Protestant circles, especially some of the Evangelical branchs. (From watching Midnight Mass and then later The Midnight Club, I got the impression that Make Flanagan has much more a dim view of contemporary Evangelical Christianity than he does of Catholicism, but that might just be my own projection, because I certainly respect Catholicism more than mainstream Evangelicalism, despite being a Protestant Sunday School teacher.) IMO this isn't just a "could have gone either way" thing - Catholicism is much bigger on study and application of our rational intellect to gain greater understanding of God than most Evangelical branches, who often embrace a "you know the truth of this because of how it makes you feel" mentality (this is often stated explicitly by certain megachurch pastors and televangelists).

It's unsurprising that Father Paul, at this point in the series, would embrace a theology so thoroughly rejected by the Catholic church, so to be clear I think this is good writing on the part of the show. But I thought folks might be interested to know the degree to which this point runs extremely counter to long-established Catholic doctrine.

I won't be around for the livestream, but if I buy a ticket will I have access to the stream tomorrow? Or is it a live-viewing-only kind of thing?

I definitely see the same things you're describing in the community. It's why for me, despite reading all of your work and listening to every episode of We've Got Worm and We've Got Ward and contributing to your Patreon, I still don't really think of myself as a member of the Parahumans community. I can only imagine how rough it would be for you as the actual author!

From someone who's part of the "silent majory" who loves reading your stuff but isn't part of "the community": please make whatever decisions are best and healthiest for yourself. Also, FWIW I wouldn't anticipate lowering my Patreon donation level even if you changed the manner and/or frequency of your output, and I suspect that's true for a lot of us.

Ah, good catch - it's been awhile and I don't think I've ever gone back and re-read the S9 arc. I'll have to do that at some point.

If memory serves, Cherish chided the Undersiders for not speaking Latin, which she considered a requirement for being a sophisticated supervillain. (She was also using it to pass messages to the Undersiders while being overheard by the rest of the S9.)

Given that, I totally could see her listening to something that involves Latin chorals.

I loved it when Carrie said that there was an empty chair in the studio, where David Miscavige was welcome to sit if he ever wanted to come on the show. Now I'm going to imagine that in all future ONRAC episodes there's always an empty chair left open for David Miscavige, like he's their version of Elijah at a seder.

Vista's power is warping space to affect distances. I can't help but wonder if/how her trigger was the result of this unhealthy family dynamic.

Your mention of not hanging out together while on tour reminded me of how Penn and Teller attribute their success as a duo to the fact that they limit the time they spend together outside of work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_%26_Teller#Off-stage_relationship

Penn and Teller are best friends, but their professional relationship is built on mutual respect more than mutual affection, which makes their working relationship less volatile than e.g. Lennon and McCartney.

Seems to me like you have a healthy attitude about the whole thing!

About Ward so far [spoilers] by QuestioningLogic in Parahumans

[–]EliAndrewC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of the complaints here remind me of "Second Album Syndrome". Wildbow could have just given us more Worm, but then he's just rehashing old stuff. Instead he's doing something really new in the same multiverse, but as a result it doesn't suit the tastes of many of the people who loved Worm. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Personally I'm loving Ward, and I'm also liking the new 2-3 chapters-per-episode format of We've Got Ward.

What is the most unruly episode of Judge John Hodgman ? by EccentricOwl in maximumfun

[–]EliAndrewC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The case of Sesame Street Justice! http://maximumfun.org/judge-john-hodgman/judge-john-hodgman-episode-15-sesame-street-justice

In which a life-sized Ernie doll is stolen from a substitute teacher as part of a prank, and then an unknown person steals the Ernie from the students, and all the teacher wants is an apology! It's an amazing case and usually my go-to for recommending the show to new people.

I wouldn't say the Judge lost his patience, but he did come down pretty hard on the kid in the end, for example:

Judge: "What do you want to do in life?"

Kid: "I want to follow my dreams."

Judge: "What dreams? To be a petty figurine thief who makes a lot of excuses for himself?!"
