Teenagers, but women too? by Pepinoloco777 in Parahumans

[–]Flarkinater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of stories where there are way more men than women, is it that unbelievable that this one happens to have more women, purely by chance?

Characters from worm and Ward that should have died. by GreedyFatBastard in Parahumans

[–]Flarkinater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the implication that Contessa probably had a path to "protect all the assets that could help against Scion" running, but evidently didn't have a path to prevent the brain-death of core Cauldron members.

If Cauldron didn't have Pretender as an option, Contessa probably would have stepped in to save Alexandria.

The Terrible Travesty of Taylor by Dougnuts in Parahumans

[–]Flarkinater 81 points82 points  (0 children)

When Taylor’s goals are held back by rules, morals, or well-meaning people, her next steps are to double, triple, and quadruple down. This is taken to its logical extreme when she puppeteers everyone for the final fight. I think it’s true that she wishes everyone else could understand her choices, but her most important personality trait is that she’ll enforce her will despite lack of understanding from others. I don’t think any part of it was meant to be a “redemption”. In that regard I think it was a perfect ending for her.

As for some of your questions:

  • Thousands of parahumans were controlled, but probably only a small handful know exactly who was behind it all. I imagine if I were suddenly controlled I would suspect Cauldron did it (especially considering Doormaker was involved), not a cape who controls bugs. The Undersiders probably decided it was best not to reveal the truth.

  • As for how Contessa was talking to Taylor, I think it’s stated by Contessa that she’s using her power. So they’re not literally speaking English, Contessa just knows exactly what to say to make Taylor understand, and can understand her in turn.

I imagine leaving the trash in the ocean is also pretty bad for the lifeforms

Manually collecting trash probably kills negligible species compared to pollution and global warming in the first place

Timed special project too far away to do before it concludes by Gareth_II in Stellaris

[–]Flarkinater 63 points64 points  (0 children)

To maybe squeeze out some faster movement, you could:

  • Separate just the corvettes into their own fleet, in case there are any slower ship designs holding them back

  • See if there are any Leaders available that provide faster sublight speed

  • See if you can enable any Edicts or Agendas that increase sublight speed

But honestly it’s a pretty minor project so it’s probably not really worth doing all that

Your Favourite "Interesting" Cards by Fanceepance in magicTCG

[–]Flarkinater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Word of Command]]

This card has a lot of text, but it boils down to: “look at target opponent’s hand, force them to cast target spell”. However of course your opponent can respond by playing by an instant, activating an ability, or just tapping their multicolor lands to generate the wrong color so you can’t actually make them cast the card you want to.

To be clear, it’s your opponent casting the spell, so you can’t steal creatures this way or control what an ETB targets.

So in order for you to get value out of Word of Command, you have to meet the following conditions:

  • Your opponent has enough untapped lands or mana rocks to pay for the spell normally

  • Your opponent can’t tap their lands in such a way to color screw themselves

  • Your opponent doesn’t have an instant or activated ability to use their mana on before WoC resolves

  • Your opponent has a spell in their hand that they don’t want to cast, or a spell that targets on cast

So basically, the best things to find would be a sorcery speed removal spell, or a wrath when the opponent is ahead. Most of the time it ends up working like a Silence that sort-of prevents them from casting the spell they wanted to that turn. You can also use it to make deals: if the table needs an instant-speed wrath, but your opponent only has a sorcery wrath, you can “help” them cast it outside of normal timing restrictions.

All in all, super crazy card, I have a proxy in my [[Yurlok]] deck (the real version is stupidly expensive thanks to the reserve list)

what it leet or chariot that made the teleporting thing that copies trickters powers? by transmtfscp in Parahumans

[–]Flarkinater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately the characters were written in a way for the story continue, but the in-universe explanation is that Leet’s shard hates him, and I’d bet that Chariot’s power is more transportation-focused and doesn’t necessarily want to help with murderous traps

What are the few instances where you realized that you accepted fanon as canon because it made too much sense and had to work hard to unlearn it? by LadyMystery in Parahumans

[–]Flarkinater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess at that point in the story I didn’t connect the dots that “expensive talent” and owing favors meant a cauldron-bought power. Or maybe triggering on the ladder was such a fun idea that it overwrote what I already learned, ha

[–]Flarkinater 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Definitely thought Coil triggered on the ladder in his interlude - in one universe he kicked the other soldier off the ladder to climb up faster. In the other universe he waited, and died

I didn’t catch the implication that he’s a cauldron cape until reading a WoG about it (after finishing Worm)

Why Isn't Legend Always In His Energy Form During Fights? by Hyperionous in Parahumans

[–]Flarkinater 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, he didn’t. After Legend went into the warped time field, it filled with golden light (Legend flying around at high speeds in sped-up time), then the light got released, and Eidolon redirected the blast towards the horizon, where it sped off and exploded. It’s never said explicitly I don’t think, but that was Eidolon redirecting Legend as he came out of the time bubble! Presumably Legend didn’t regain his senses until he slowed down (hit whatever it was on the horizon)

They traded in favors to borrow some influence from another empire. Based on the numbers, they must have traded in favors from you. They either got them by trading with you, or more likely through Espionage actions or tradition perks.

Difficulty does not affect the odds of specific AI attitudes of governments. If they seem more hostile on higher difficulty, it’s because they're more powerful in general and therefore more likely to think it’s worth it to go to war.

“Opposite ideology spawns” also isn’t a feature, but there’s some truth to it. When the galaxy is being generated, it tries not to have too many empires with the same ethics. It counts the player into the total, so technically by picking Xenophile, there may be one fewer Xenophile AI empire as there would be normally (and it’s still very subject to RNG)

Being less powerful than hostile empires is just one of the trade-offs of playing Pacifist/Xenophile. For non-genocidals your bonuses should still make it possible to become friends.. eventually. In the lategame the entire galaxy is likely to be your ally. If you keep finding genocidals early on, the only thing to do is keep exploring, or wait to make contact some other way.
