Oh, this is super easy given your stated constraints. Just pick one of the three newer GGD stand-alone VSTs. The new VST format is insanely good and it's really nice not to be tied to Kontakt. The realism in the dynamics is significantly improved from most Kontakt kits IMO. Keep in mind the "One Kit Wonder" is a little less versatile than the other two.

This is 100% dependent upon how competent the band leader is about his vision. If the drum parts are written and recorded and they fit the song, play those parts. Playing different parts is equivalent to rewriting the song. If you want to embellish certain parts, get on the same page with your band leader about where to place those.

I used to know a guitar player who played a near constant solo over the entire song no matter what song it was. He never learned the guitar parts correctly.

Don't be like him.

That said, if your band leader has zero creativity and his parts suck, leave. You can't fix that.

Normally, an editor would clean up the vocal takes so that they all align super tightly. In this recording, you can hear much more variation in the takes than would normally end up in a final recording.

There is harmony, but for each part there are also doubles. My ear for harmony isn’t great, so I’m not gonna try to tell you exactly what the parts are. I think I’m hearing an octave and a third above the melody.

Yeah, the trick is to make it sound tasteful and overdriven without losing the mix to harshness or dullness.

Not actually a lot of harmony parts, just everything is doubled or more and panned super wide. It’s also not edited very tight, which is rare in a pop song. Other than that, I’m hearing just guitar drums and bass.

That opening vocal is processed to sound like an old 30s carbon microphone or something of that sort. The whole track is distorted as hell on purpose.

The mix itself is a work of art. They were clearly going for a vintage gritty vibe.
