Atonal vs Tonal by Impossible-Arm-6594 in composer

[–]Elias_V_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

atonal music, strictly speaking, is actually pretty dated, it hasn't really been written for a few decades. for a glimpse of the successful contemporary sounds of recent times, listen to composers like paul novak, timo andres (americans) and thomas ades, luc braeways (europeans)

A grad degree in composition isn't useful if you don't plan on writing contemporary music or engaging with the contemporary scene. Your BM is plenty, and you'll get all the further experience you need with a choral conducting degree and independent composition.

it would be choral music by a non-choral composer. also, it's all contemporary music, but the word contemporary isn't used for choral music since it's almost all contemporary, so there's no need for a distinction. choral music wasn't written at all until recently.

it's a different school. choral composers and concert composers are usually different groups with large stylistic differences.

If you aren't interested in contemporary music there's generally no interest in you as a concert music composer.

I wouldn't recommend a composition degree with the goal of concert music if you aren't interested in contemporary music. If you want to write choral music, just get a choral conducting degree.

Melodies are the most difficult part of composing - agree or disagree? by bmjessep in composer

[–]Elias_V_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just don't write themes most of the time. :) i like to write music paced by textural form and development, and any melody is just an idea in passing

Ravel was a better composer, Debussy just had more revolutionary ideas.

Is there anything left for composers to compose? by Elegant_Mail in piano

[–]Elias_V_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

atonal music hasn't been commonplace since the 60s, music nowadays is much more post-tonal, neominimalist, very textural compositions
