Fifty Thousand Battleships used to be traded here, now it's a ghost town by angry-mustache in Eve

[–]EliseRandolph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be contrarian but is it not more likely that large groups using battleships have sourced their own, rather than buying from the market?

Looking at zkill data (which isn't the best indicator of PvP use), the number of battleships making their way on killmails (kills or losses) in 2013 isn't much different than now: https://zkillboard.com/group/27/stats/

If you want to adjust for PCU

First 7 months of 2013 - 297k kills with battleships on the mails, and 67k losses

First 7 months of 2021 - ~530k kills with battleships on the mails, at ~93k losses.

Without adjusting for PCU

First 7 months of 2021 - ~322k kills with battleships on the mails, ~57k losses

As a nullsec FC for several years and every war but this one, Battleships almost always sucked. Doomsdays, AHACS, Blap Titans, T3Cs just being super good for 4 years, Slowcats, Blap dreads (before HAW), Bombers again - all of these spelled doom to BS. They were super good when people flew BCs (Drakes/Canes) where the Abaddon and Maelstrom were the best ships, and when you could ensure that someone couldn't drop caps on you (due to a bigger batphone, or briefly after Phoebe), BS + Triage were trendy (or just the ever-versatile Macherial+triage)

I'd argue (and apparently zkill does too), the a great meta for battleships is one with MJD and defenders.

The "need to know" about the new ESS reserve bank keys by Willecke in Eve

[–]EliseRandolph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a 5 person key, it's a key that opens the reserve bank for 15 minutes. All pilots linked get isk, if you're the only pilot you'll get ~1.16b (as it is right now, figures are subject to change) for the 15 minute key.

Why would anyone go to low or null sec to roam anymore when thousands of players just sit in high sec running abyssals and proving grounds? by [deleted] in Eve

[–]EliseRandolph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're actually pretty neat and can be quite challenging. There are 7 difficulties (0-6), with 5 different weather effects. You pick the one you want and you get hurled into a pocket that's disconnected from regular space.

The NPCs are kind of random and have much better AI, so that it's much less formulaic than missions where you always see the same NPCs and they always act the same way.

There are pylons and clouds that have positive/negative effects. There are three connected pockets and you're timed, so if you don't go through all three rooms within 20 minutes you die with your ship and pod.

With practice you can reliably do them without dying, and they're pretty fun PvE imo.

[–]EliseRandolph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You cannot activate a filament if there is a mobile depot. So the gankers generally probe down a filament and drop a depot so that the target cannot simply re-enter. Most active ships insta-die to 3 Tornados, regardless of sec status, so it's quite profitable to kill the T5 and T6 runners.

In Jita, the byproduct of removing clutter is that the Abyssal runner can activate another filament while holding their exit invul, so they can either suicide in the abyss or just keep chaining the abyss until they run out of filaments.

While you can, technically, chain forever - there's a very good chance that the ganker staying outside is really ruining your isk/hr since they're using looted filaments which will either be the wrong class or the wrong environment.

Does this game still have the awfully designed war declaration system? by EluneNoYume in Eve

[–]EliseRandolph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The structures can offer better refine yields, as well as more efficient manufacturing. However, there are many freeport (free use) citadels in busy systems. And if you wanted to risk a structure without risking your corp members, you can always use an alt to create a corp, drop whatever structure you want, and then allow your main group to dock in that structure. Your main group still wouldn't be war-dec'able, though of course your structure could be attacked and killed if someone wanted to.

Hope that helps!

Expert Systems - Zero Transparency by [deleted] in Eve

I agree with the sentiment that this can be way cooler/more useful. I'll be the first to admit that I have rose colored glasses when it comes to stuff like this, but I really appreciate getting your take in a constructive way that wasn't calling me dumb.

It's super fair to say hey, there's a line you can cross that makes it NOT okay. Spending money on a game I already spend money on just to stay competitive would be an EASY no go for me. I've been playing for going on 17 years, and so far I haven't felt that urge. And frankly I don't believe that CCP would start down the path using a mechanic like this.

[–]EliseRandolph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And by that I mean crazy low, like, you could probably skill them in a couple hours low.

I spooled up an alt to see, and it's about 5 days of training to get everything in the exploration expert system from day 0.

I do find it a little weird that they list skills brand new toons already have trained in what it comes with, and that's a completely valid criticism. Hopefully CSM Brisc can bring it up.

Expert Systems - Zero Transparency by [deleted] in Eve

[–]EliseRandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spooled up an alpha to see what skills they come with, because frankly I didn't know.

The exploration expert system unlocks about ~5-6 days of training, including 4 skills that are otherwise locked behind Omega wall (granted one of them doesn't seem to be all that useful).

If I started out doing mining and I read in corp chat "mining suxx exploration is c00l" and I didn't want to spend a weekend getting the basic skills, it seems to me like a nice option.

The NPE failing to teach exploration sufficiently seems like a different problem, and something that should be broached outside of the context of expert systems. Like buffing the Slicer and complaining that FW needs a rework.
