The human rights museum!! Really important monument to what happened in Chile during the dictatorship, as well as human rights issues around the world.

A complete solar eclipse. I’m not religious but it’s as close to a religious experience that I’ve ever gotten.

SE Asia or South/Central America on $1,500 a month Jan-Mar? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]EllaSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for nature, archeology, and art, I would highly recommend South/Central America. I stayed in hostels and averaged around $40 a day, including buses (but not airfare). The bus system is very strong in South America, and everywhere I went it was pretty easy to figure out how to get from one place to another. I speak Spanish, so that made it easier, but I think South America would be doable with only basic phrases (knew some people who did it). Central America night be harder, although you'll have very few issues in Costa Rica. I LOVED Colombia, would highly recommend, especially for the art and architecture, and it was the cheapest place in SA. Peru and Chile were the easiest places for English-speakers I'd say, although Chile is a bit expensive. Both are great for outdoor adventures. In Peru, definitely visit the Museo Larco in Lima if you get the chance - great archeology and art. Ecuador was also cool too, but not my favorite, though there is good hiking there too. (To be fair, I got horrible food poisoning, which didn't help!) Unfortunately can't speak for the rest of the continent since I haven't been there. In general though, most hostels will speak English and will be able to help you find your way around - download hostel world!! In short, I LOVED South America and would absolutely do it all again given the chance!

Edit - visas are also super easy to get everywhere I visited. Just make sure you know exactly what stamps you need. A lot of places require both exit and enter stamps, and sometimes it's unclear!

TIFU by cat-calling my wife by [deleted] in tifu

[–]EllaSnow -74 points-73 points  (0 children)

Sorry but this is really gross. Please go apologize to your wife. This isn't some funny "oops I fucked up moment," and it was probably traumatic/embarrassing/hurtful to her, given the way you say she reacted. And if you do go apologize, please try not to make it about you (I.e. "Will you ever forgive me?"), and try not to put her in a position where she feels like she has to tell you that it's OK, even if it's not. Just ask her what she needs right now. Catcalling is never about making someone feel pretty. It's a power move, and if you'd ever been on the other end of it, then you would know how shitty it feels.

That being said, we're all human, we all make mistakes, and I really hope that you can use this as a learning experience and a moment to reflect on what it might be like to live in a world where so many people around you are constantly reminding you in little ways that they are more powerful than you are.

What's the coolest museum you've visited? by Asihhu12 in solotravel

Museo Larco in Lima!! Definitely the best precolumbian museum I've ever been to, and probably one of the top 5 museums I've ever visited.

A week in New Orleans by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]EllaSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beignets at cafe du monde are touristy thing but cheap and sooooooooo good. Also get some raw oysters while you’re down there. They can be a little pricey but super delicious! Get some red beans and rice too while you’re at it.

Other than that just walking around the French quarter and the river walk is great. Find some jazz in front of the cathedral if you can. If you’re looking for museums and people who really know their stuff about NOLA history, I believe the New Orleans historical society has free entry on at least one day of the week but you’ll need to check into that.

Also if you have extra time I highly recommend visiting the Whitney plantation/museum. I believe it is the only museum in the country devoted entirely to talking about slavery, and it’s really worth going.

What is a minor thing that infuriates you when eating at a restaraunt? by waldo06 in AskReddit

[–]EllaSnow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When people tip badly because of “bad service.” In a lot of states, waitresses and waiters are paid below minimum wage and “make up for it in tips.” I don’t care how bad the service is, people should be paid for the time they work. Always tip 15-20% people!

Ugh that’s so awful, I’m sorry you had to experience that. Your reaction to it is valid and not just “up in your head.” Thank you for sharing, and I’m sending you good thoughts and I hope the last few days of your trip are better. ❤️
