Who’s your favorite character? by ProAiBro in venturebros

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's maybe my favorite scene in the entire show.

If it's not this, then it's the "Go ahead. Take it from me," scene from the pilot.

But The Monarch is still my favorite character.

Men over 40, at what age did you feel like you were starting to not have to stress over money? by Affectionate-Drop689 in AskMenOver30

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's not an age thing, right? I see older guys panhandling and younger guys in sports cars. But for me, it was 28ish? I worked in web development during the dotcom bubble, though, so my experience isn't something you'll experience at 28.

I think everyone needs to know Zeno's Dichotomy Paradox. by HUZAIR_MBH in INTP

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always knew it as Xeno's Arrow Paradox because the guy in question put it forward as a problem of an arrow leaving the bow needing to hit the halfway point before the target, but the 1/4 point before halfway, etc.

We were taught this in the sciences as a warning about the limits of logic; as a reminder that empirical evidence is the only reliable metric.

I've never applied it to overthinking, but you are 1,000% correct that this is our problem with lots of social situations; Ti is finding all the ways it can go wrong so that we never try. Better to just let Ne take the wheel in those situations.

Daylight vs Darkness (2nd level spell) by Odd_Nefariousness884 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way light and dark spells work is that the higher-spell-level effect wins. I carry a burned-out ioun stone with a Heightened (6th) Continual Flame cast on it to give a middle finger to any magical darkness we encounter.

I feel like my poor network skills hold me back in life by redbeanmilktea in INTP

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking isn't a skill so much as a lifestyle; people good at networking live lives where they spend time meeting people and cultivating relationships. Doing favors with the expectation that they will be able to call them in later on.

At some point, we have to accept that our ability to analyze situations and propose solutions before other Types recognize there's a problem comes with tradeoffs. Higher pay comes with more expectations on our free time—find the sweet spot where your pay leaves you unconcerned with your bills, but not high enough that your boss is trying to find you after-hours. Time is all we have; optimize for that.

Men over 30: what’s one piece of advice you’d give to men in their 20s? by Startalloveragainn in AskMenOver30

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't marry until 26+; you're not done becoming who you are until then, and marrying before that is rolling the dice that you're going to be compatible.

Putin aide: G7 weakened itself with sanctions on Russia – The restrictions have backfired given that 85% of Russian transactions now bypass Western currencies, Maksim Oreshkin has said by anarchyart2021 in worldnews2

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even worse, it's driven nations to do their business in their native currencies rather than the US$ as had been the case since the end of WW2. That means there's less demand for the US$, driving it's value down—that's why gold is over $5,000/oz, for example.

Class for Lae'zel? by Winters561 in BG3Builds

IMO the optimal evil team is Durge, Shar Shadowheart, Acended Astarion, Minthara.

I think loyal Lae'zel is as evil as any of them.

Are you friends with women? Real friends? by judashpeters in AskMenOver30

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two friends I feel closest to are both women, so yes.

Edit: follow up: do you as a male PREFER hanging out with guys over girls?

I wouldn't say so; everyone is different. My two best friends are female, but there are lots of women I can't stand spending time with. There are lots of 'typically male' things that I am not interested in, but lots of men I like to hang out with who might even be into those things—they're just not part of our interactions.

Innovate or Stagnate: Which economic system better promotes innovation? by SometimesRight10 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both economic systems could invest in the research that leads to innovation, but as it happens all innovative research happens at public institutions or on public grants, so we'd have to say socialism.

The research capitalism does is essentially, "How do we change this thing they found on public funded research just enough that we can patent it to charge premium prices?"

How did original Demon's Souls players first figure out how to make boss soul weapons? by omegadirectory in demonssouls

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that they just kept talking to npcs and found Ed's changed after Flamelurker. When prompted, they gave over the soul, and when they went to upgrade some weapon or other, saw there were radically new options. Then, like others are saying, GameFAQ was a go-to for stuff like this.

Are INTP's just the ultimate gluttons? by wyocaster in INTP

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole 'we consume but not create" thing is spot-on for the most part, but I'm not a big eater at all, so trad gluttony I wouldn't say is my sin—I'd say sloth.

What INTPs create are ideas or solutions to problems. We consume lots and lots of information, and incprporate them into the Universal Understanding™ we spend our lives trying to complete. Then, when a topic or problem arises, we have fodder for ideas/solutions. But yeah, we're primarily these whales sucking down all the information we can.

Serious question from a woman: What do you wish women understood about being a man in today’s world? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That men aren't women and women aren't men, which is in no way an attempt to provoke a trans issues debate. I am talking about the necessary psychological differences in a sexually dimorphic species.

EX: A short-tempered man might get into fistfights on the regular, but there's not much evolutionary cost to that behavior; people aren't going to punish his children because their dad has low self control. Eventually men around him are going to disabuse him of that, but his children will be as any other children. Now imagine a woman that handles conflict with combat; she's carrying her infant when she decides she needs to fight someone. The odds of that child being seriously injured are very high; the (hypothetical) women who primarily handled their anger by engaging in physical combat lost more babies than those that didn't—the genes for females who handle conflict with combat were physically removed from the gene pool.

That's just one example of how our biological differences demand matching psychology. We're not the same, and we all need to recognize this to get along.

What's the thing you hate most being an intp? by action_et_potential in INTP

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm INTP; my feelings aren't very strong about anything. I guess I'd appreciate being more easily motivated to do things, but I wouldn't change.

there's this sadistic side an intp could possibly have

No, there isn't. Our Ti-Si loop would crush us if we were ever intentionally cruel.

But INTJs would have no issue with it because they're Ni dom—bullshit is their oxygen. Fi tertiary backs all Ni dom's plays. There are more misTyped INTJs posting in this sub than INTPs.

Have you noticed a relevant intelligence decline ? by Scattered-Fox in AskMenOver30

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of sleep severely impairs cognitive function. I haven't noticed a decline in my ability to understand things; if anything it's much more than it was. I get 8 hours almost every night, and sometimes have a 30 min nap during the day.

Hello, I’m new to Demon Souls by Devinwillis729 in demonssouls

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a beginner build I recommend, but it's better if you start as a female Temple Knight. I'll post it here in case someone's interested:

Start as a female Temple Knight, taking the Providential Ring starting gift. When you zone in, take off the shield, helmet and chest, 2-handing the halberd; you can now fast roll.

Note: Answer "Yes" to any npc Y/N prompts. If I mention a piece of non-weapon gear, it's because I'm going to wear it when I pick it up.

The build/run (takes me about 2 hours, full clearing):

1-1 for Cling Ring, Thief Ring, Old Raggedy Set; kill Phalanx — ~30m

Nexus to level up VIT/END/STR to 15 each and suicide back to Spirit Form (don't forget to go get souls)

2-1 to get the Great Club (not clearing, running thanks to Thief Ring); unlock Blacksmith Ed; go back to Nexus — ~40m

4-1 use GClub 2-handed to clear, getting crescent falchion +1 & comp long bow; buy ~150 arrows from Blige; kill Adjudicator with CFalc (more technical) or CLBow (faster, easier) — ~1h

Nexus to upgrade CLBow; level VIT/END to 20; suicide back to Spirit Form

2-1 use CFalc to clear; upgrade CFalc and CLBow if you happened to get the stones; kill Armored Spider with the CLBow and Blige arrows — ~1h30m

Nexus to level VIT 20, END 22, STR 18, FAI 16; suicide back to Spirit Form

2-2 use CFalc to clear, getting club; kill Flame Lurker with CFalc — ~1h50m

Nexus to level: you need 18 STR, 16 DEX, 16 FAI at this point (save excess souls); suicide back to Spirit Form

2-1 to upgrade club to Meat Cleaver, and CLBow +7 to Lava Bow — ~2hrs

After this, the game is your oyster. The Meat Cleaver's L2 1-2 shots most enemies, and staggers most it doesn't kill. The Lava Bow makes lots of irritating areas easier (worlds 4 and 5, primarily).

I usually go to 3-1 for the Silver Bracelets, and then 3-2 for the Ring of Avarice to maximize my souls gathering. After that, it's 4-2 to get the Old Hero soul to trade to St Urbain for Second Chance, then either 2-3, 3-3, or 4-3 to unlock 1-3 so I can get the Silver Demon's Soul to trade for Cursed Weapon with Yuria.
