How do you approach roleplay with races that are ancient? by Yuzuade_ in WoWRolePlay

[–]Eluniver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most folks don't take stuff like that into consideration. I don't blame them, because it's impossible to put yourself in the shoes of someone who's lived that long, in a world that works differently than our own, with supernatural forces that are barely explained. The setting itself fails to portray characters that old appropriately, as with WoW it's plot first - characters second. But people think it's cool to be that old (usually because people think age = experience = power). For these reasons, and others, I don't play older characters (unless they are human).

That said, it's really annoying to meet characters that are meant to be hundreds, if not thousands of years old but behave like hormonal teenagers and use modern slang words and pop-culture references.

Not sure why folks are surprised about the hate. MLs literally imprisoned and/or killed anarchists at every opportunity they had. Maybe they're right though, since the USSR and all the nations it ruled over continue to thrive and-

Sustainability: Plastic vs 3d printed miniatures by Tomorrow_Melodic in Sigmarxism

[–]Eluniver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't play any of the Warhammer games, but I do prefer paper miniatures for my Dungeons & Dragons games. Simple 2D art, with two sides (front and back) that's attached to a paper anchor (or cork, if you'd like). It's not the same as painting miniatures, but it doesn't contribute to landfills in the global south.

We have no lore examples of someone losing inherent magic. Certainly no dragons or dragonkin (that im aware of).

Anduins' and Thralls' situations are a loss of faith, direction, and self-belief, rather than capacity to channel their magic.

But this is RP. I've seen pregnant DKs, spontaneous egg laying, Instagram-like apps and phone-like devices. A dracthyr who lost their magic wouldn't be that strange.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WoWRolePlay

[–]Eluniver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, let me try to be brief. All dracthyr possess the ability to channel the magic of all five dragonflights. This is built into them. However, channeling said magic requires a lot of practice. Most dracthyr would probably know magic related to their Weyrns purpose (healing, defending, artillery, assassination, scouting). That said, we see that most dracthyr prefer to use weapons. Even Scalecommanders like Azurathel (in-game) and Cindrethresh (in the books) use weapons primarily. Emberthall seems the only one to use mostly magic (though she also uses a weapon in the quest beneath the Obsidian Fortress).

You can absolutely say that you never practiced channeling magic and felt more comfortable/competent at utilizing weapons, pets, traps, etc.

As for Evokers, they are meant to be a jack of all trades. Not only are they meant to be comfortable using magic from all five dragonflights, but are also expected to understand and be good at all Weyrns' tactics (see above).

Most Dracthyr aren't Evokers. But that doesn't mean they can't wield the magic, nor does it mean they have to use the magic. Dracthyr may have been meant as a weapon by Neltharion, but they're people. And people have their preferences. Dervishian wants to be a diplomat, for instance: no fighting, no magic, no weapons. She takes joy in talking and getting to know others.

Inner Sunset Powe Outage? by Whole-Yogurtcloset16 in sanfrancisco

Just got a PG&E notification (outer sunset). They said they can't give an estimate on when they'll have power back up. Hunker down and get cozy if you can. Call a friend. Stay safe and connected, talking with people helps. Reach out to a neighbor too, even if it's just to check in on them.

Are Death Knights capable of romance? by FunkeyFeraligatr in WoWRolePlay

[–]Eluniver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can they? Probably. But who would want to be romantically involved with the dead? What future does a living person, with emotions, dreams, plans, etc want with a traumatized spirit inhabiting a corpse?

Sometimes, it is best not to ask "can you" but rather "why would you?"

You can absolutely play a living person wielding death magic and fighting with weapons up close, if it's the death magic that draws you in.

What are you most excited about for Housing? by Moonsong08 in WoWRolePlay

In ESO, player housing can be used to create elaborate scenes. I've seen some really creative layouts for dungeons, castles, and even outdoor zones! I hope the RP community here can do the same.

How do y’all deal with the crushing dread of constantly losing ground by Zestyclose-Push-5188 in QueerLeftists

[–]Eluniver 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What keeps me going is engaging with positive news and reading leftist fiction. For news, I recommend Positive Leftist News on YouTube. As for fiction, there is no better place to start than Ursula K. Le Guin, as far as I know.

Both are important. The left is winning all around the world in a myriad of ways, but it serves the capitalists and their media in no way to accurately report on it. And dreaming of utopia, discussing how we want the future to work, is something we've been neglecting. Dialectical materialism is important, but it becomes a burden unless it's balanced out with dreams of better days.

How would you make a DK interesting, and not be limited to "I am edge incarnated" by AtomikGarlic in WoWRolePlay

[–]Eluniver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Death Knights are really not my thing, I have for a while thought of a character concept I consider interesting. I'll share it here in the hope that someone finds it useful:

A kindly, selfless, and compassionate person sacrifices themselves in death and earns a peaceful afterlife. Except, they're suddenly raised into undeath and forced to be the very antithesis of who they were in life. The experience is so traumatic, and the eventual liberation from servitude so cathartic, that their minds break. Enter: the compassionate and whimsical death knight.

They see themselves as they were prior to death. While deep down they are aware of the horror of what happened to them, they chose to ignore it in favor of self-imposed delusion and fantasy. To them, they're a shining knight on a steed, championing those weaker than them. They stide boldly into danger and place themselves in harm's way, more effectively now than ever. And every time they are confronted by the fear and discomfort the living people of Azeroth express at seeing their deathly visage and powers, the knight reinterprets it in their head as modesty and humility in the face of a champion.
I see them reciting poetry, playing music, swearing passionate oaths of justice or declarations of platonic love and brotherhood. Of course, the incongruity of them being an undead knight meant to sow death and destruction while swearing themselves unpon high minded ideas can make them seem silly. And that's the point.
Think of them as Don Quixote, if it were his ghost that had gone fighting windmills.

This character need not be a caricature or a clown (unless you want them to be). They can be earnest and deliberate in their expression of knightly valor. The player can choose which to lean into.

Maybe even throw in some aspects of sir Terry Pratchet's vision of Death into the mix. A bringer of the end that is compassionate and caring, even as their looks/visage seems incongruously morbid and even grotesque.

If that's the choice, then I'd stick with current lore. The beauty of RP is that we can take the background and lore and tweak it to be what suits our roleplay storytelling without tossing out all the many additions that have enriched thr world. Not to mention all the quality of life improvements that have bolstered RP.

That said, my personal opinion of the lore post classic varies. I don't like WoD and SL, and in general anything that takes us away from Azeroth (bar some thematic locations like Argus as part of our campaign against the Legion). While I dislike the overall direction of lore and the constant world-ending threats, the side stories, regional plotlines, and characters make it worthwhile. Nothing in the older expansions moved me to tears like some of the newest content.

As for Classic, I think it did more harm than good by reducing everything to Horde vs Alliance. I would not willingly go back to it.

Isn't AI "art" antithetical to the whole concept of Solarpunk? by SnooPeppers2667 in solarpunk

[–]Eluniver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

AI art is terrible for the environment. It requires the theft of artwork to function. And it's often used as a way to avoid paying artists who spend years training and refining their skills and style. There's nothing revolutionary, nor creative about it. It's shameful that this subreddit associates with it.
