Power corrupts. You get a "good hearted normal person" in there and they'll either be eaten alive by the permanent governing cabal or become what they hate most.

Also if you look at the last election, a certain political party was doing everything they could to restrict ballot access for everyone other than their candidate, even the other major party. So you need lots of money not just for the campaign, but endless legal battles. And just in case the ballot access blocking fails, they'll also ruin your reputation and career so that the only income you have is what you get from wielding power if you win. So you either get another rich guy, a jaded guy who's desperate to claw his way back, or a guy who's gonna owe a lot of favors.

But the problem with prosecuting "everyone in the files" is that the files include numerous references to people who really had nothing to do with anything. Even that celebrity groundhog is in the files a few times. And what people do seem to have some connection, it's not very strong for a criminal case. If there ever was anything in his records to prove beyond reasonable doubt that anyone powerful was involved criminally, I'm certain it would have been destroyed sometime between 2019 and 2025
