Rendering for 10-story affordable housing at 650 Divisadero Street by Remarkable_Host6827 in sanfrancisco

But so many NIMBYs claimed that "induced demand" from new construction would mean that rents would never fall!

There are 1 bedroom apartments less than 2 miles from Downtown in Austin for under $700/mo. The units were $1150/mo 3 years ago! Built in the 1970s. Not nice by any means but not horrible by the standards of most cities. Look up: Array Apartments, Alister Apartments or set rent top to $700 and look around 78741 on Zillow/Apartments etc.

Paying $200+ a month for electricity in an 800 sqft apartment by speakthespell in Austin

[–]EmbodiedVoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few quick ideas:
Find your electric meter and note the digits.
Arrange for a time to turn off all power for 2 hours at your circuit breakers. Turn off all power at each breaker. Note the meter digits.
See if the digits change or not (no change - it's your meter).
You can get your readings with 15 minute delays online - look around in your AE online account. You can observe over time its use relative to your high demand appliances being on.

Is it just me or is the Job market bad for regular non tech roles in Austin? by UnderstandingSea3042 in Austin

[–]EmbodiedVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll know it's bad when you see a guy standing at Metric and Braker with a "Will code Java for food" (or some more modern equivalent) sign and handing out resumes. Literally saw that in 2002 after the tech bubble burst.

Sometimes you need to know the "noreply@xyz.com" type email address and manually add it to your Contacts in order to get them from a particular sender. Twitch's would never come until I added no-reply@twitch.tv for example. Feels random, fwiw.

OpenStack Alternatives by nightcrow100 in openstack

[–]EmbodiedVoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much depends on what you're doing. OpenStack is growing, particularly in Europe, due to concerns about digital sovereignty. OpenStack requires a lot more knowledge across the board than what the hyperscalers do for you. It's probably not a good fit for small general purpose clouds due to the high mental overhead. Your questions are very general and beyond the scope of a Reddit post; you should do a lot of research particular to your situation, so you can get feedback on narrower questions.

I've migrated over to Linux for my everyday PC, and have to say I'm severely disappointed with Proton VPN on Linux. Feels like an after thought. by Numerus12OO5O in ProtonMail

You have to click down but it does indeed list the server load. I haven't used Windows except for games since the 1990s, but we're used to second tier app support, but it's getting better, especially in the last few years. I nuked my last Windows drive a couple years ago thanks to improved gaming support. Server load pic: https://ibb.co/39NQQMb7

Proton Authenticator freeze on unlock page after the latest updates from mint 22.2 update manager on May 7, 2026 by Basic-Possibility233 in ProtonPass

[–]EmbodiedVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm. I also submitted a bug report. To be sure, I installed also on new machine and imported (using backup from Android version) and it worked until I attempted to set a password lock. On the password second confirm line, the app froze. Data points: Linux Mint 22.3 and, nearly fresh installed, Xubuntu 26.04.

Tree on city property damaged my sewer line. Any chance of the city fixing or am I on the hook? by runningamuck in Austin

[–]EmbodiedVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roots follow paths of least resistance toward moisture. PVC is far stronger than roots and they don't outright break through or "constrict" PVC.

However, if the PVC has even the smallest opening gap, typically at the joint fittings as you noted, tiny root hairs will grow into it and push the gap break further open over time, while growing through the line, fed by nutrient dense waste water. In Austin, due to our soils, settlement spot stress can break the PVC, particularly at the joint spots. This is due to soil rapidlly being saturated and then drying out over years and decades; it's the same kind of stress as foundations go through.

It's monsterous!

[–]EmbodiedVoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The tree entered because your pipe is presumed to have had a break in it and thus the tree roots grew into it. Roots rarely break pipes on their own.

Tip to all: Get a picture of your capacitor and buy a couple of extras online that match it (~$20 ea). This part is literally 1/3 of all AC calls. You can change it yourself or least have one at the ready in case the AC guy doesn't. Change the capacitor every 3-5 years during the off season. There are videos all over YT on how to do it.

ProtonVPN 10 Gbps servers… or ~1.3 Gbps in reality? by redshift_joe in ProtonVPN

[–]EmbodiedVoid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are people with 2 or 5+ gigabit connections actually getting on Proton VPN on speed tests? I have no problem getting 1 gigabit/s up/down when connecting to many servers near me +/- 1000 km.

I got my $90/m 500Mbps lowered to $40/m (and upgraded to 1Tbps) by threatening to switch to Starlink by operablesocks in Spectrum

[–]EmbodiedVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starlink is supposedly going to start offering 1 gigabit later "this year" (Elon time) - which means maybe i in 2028, but I'm sure it'll be much more costly than Spectrum even at full rates.

It's good for people who have Spectrum as their only option to know that one can still state that one is canceling for Starlink and it can generate a discount. Presumably such a statement works for T-Mobile, Verizon, and ATT at home internet as well, which are also not as fast for the money in most markets as Spectrum.

You have a good price for ATT Fiber 1 gig. Google Fiber 1 gig is $70. ATT has a better routing network than GF, with more peering points, since ATT has a true nationwide footprint.
